Data & telecommunications

The technology revolution has led to increased social and political pressures on data and telecommunications infrastructure to store and deliver large quantities of data and communications quickly, reliably and economically.

2 Aurecon Data & telecommunications

The digital age has seen enormous changes in data and telecommunications, with emerging technologies changing the way we communicate and conduct business. It also plays a vital role in connecting and developing the world’s emerging countries by linking their people and integrating them into the global economy, making global markets more accessible for business and improving the quality of life.

As more users become reliant upon mobile technology, network operators and service providers face the triple challenge of increasing capacity to meet user demands, providing services to more remote areas and delivering value added services to their customers more economically. The growth in wireless data, along with the associated increase in content and traffic, has seen the timely deployment of effective data and telecommunications infrastructure become increasingly important.

There are also increased social and political pressures to deliver large quantities of data and communications quickly, reliably and economically in a manner that is sustainable and aligns with government initiatives.

Offering world class data and telecommunications expertise that is backed by multidisciplinary technical expertise, Aurecon works in partnership with carriers, network operators,

equipment vendors, data management companies, contractors and government bodies to provide innovative data and telecommunication solutions that are reliable, high quality and offer value for money.

Having worked on projects in more than 80 countries, Aurecon offers global capabilities that are supported by localised knowledge and a strong focus on the client. We integrate and align our teams with our clients to deliver best practice for project

outcomes across safety, risk, schedule, budget, quality and sustainability.

We do not compromise on Health & Safety. It comes first in everything we do and is a core value for Aurecon. We foster this by appointing experienced teams who combine a deep understanding of the management of Health & Safety with that of our clients.

Telstra Network Facilities Design Consultancy Panel AustraliaClient Telstra

Aurecon was awarded a position on Telstra’s Network Facilities Design Consultancy Panel in 2011 to provide Design Consulting Services for Telstra’s network property portfolio.

The role requires Aurecon to deliver building engineering services studies, conduct viability audits, produce return briefs and complete detailed designs for upgrades and expansions to Telstra’s significant network property portfolio Australia wide.

The appointment further strengthens Aurecon’s position as a provider of premium design services to major data and telecommunication organisations, such as Telstra.

Fibre roll-out programmeSouth AfricaClient Dark Fibre Africa

Dark Fibre Africa is rapidly laying fibre optic cables throughout South Africa and, to date, has installed an estimated 6 200 kilometres of fibre.

Responsible for planning, designing and implementing projects, Aurecon, in joint venture with PH Bagale, is ensuring Dark Fibre Africa’s ring networks, spurs and last miles enable increased internet bandwidth and faster connectivity. The networks will ensure customers are able to access a wider range of services such as triple broadband. They will also ensure that multiple stakeholders across the entire ICT value chain benefit, including local construction companies and mobile network operators.

Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) Project AustraliaClient Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)

Aurecon was awarded the role of infrastructure designer and construction contract superintendent for part of the AUD 152 million project, in collaboration with various government stakeholders. In addition to civil, structural, electrical design and contract superintendence services, Aurecon has also been involved with GIS related services.

Aurecon’s methodology was to ensure an ongoing collaborative approach so that all of the relevant stakeholders were informed and involved in the decision making process. We achieved this by hosting prescribed and supplementary workshops with the relevant stakeholders to progress the project and work through issues as they arose.

The ASKAP project involves constructing a radio telescope array of 36 dish antennas, each 12 metres in diameter, a control building and supporting infrastructure on the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory (MRO) site by 2013. A unique and world-class instrument, ASKAP will be one of the world’s premier radio telescopes and will help to answer fundamental questions about our universe.

Our expertise and industry knowledge has been developed on projects around the world, allowing our teams to develop detailed localised knowledge of the 80 plus countries in which we have worked.

Equinix Data Centre SY3AustraliaClient Equinix

Aurecon provided fast track design and construction consultancy services for Equinix SY3, a colocation data centre in Sydney. Delivered on budget and to deadline, this mission critical facility supports the expanding internet, telecommunications and data markets. Associated building services include transformers, static UPS, diesel generators, chillers, AHUs and CRAC units.

Extensive space planning was required to optimise use of the existing building envelope, minimise installation costs and provide suitable maintenance access. The design Power Utilisation Effectiveness (PUE), exceeded the client brief by achieving a value of 1.4. The module size of the building services plant ensured the efficient operation of plant and design load that suited staged load growth. The total design was delivered using Revit, a 3D computer aided design (CAD) package, to demonstrate coordination and fit of all equipment, and provide client understanding and confidence in the solution.

Optus Mobile Network Deployment Site Acquisition, Environment and Design (SAED) AustraliaClient Optus

Aurecon has assisted Optus to deploy mobile network programmes since 1992, working on the design and acquisition of nearly 5 000 greenfield base stations and over 5 800 site upgrades. Mobile network deployment programmes are large, complex and involve many small projects each with specific characteristics.

The Optus SAED programmes involved the acquisition, environmental approvals and design of new and upgraded base transceiver stations throughout metropolitan and rural areas. Aurecon is responsible for the first phase of deployment, providing project management, design (civil, structural, electrical, geotechnical), environmental planning, community consultation, and property acquisition expertise.

Aurecon’s multidisciplinary capabilities required for the project included: antenna mount design; structural supports for equipment shelters; equipment ventilation; power supply; earthing; lightning protection; prevention of dust ingress; cable access; and occupational Health & Safety requirements.

UMC and IMAX cabinet roll-out South AfricaClient TFMC for Telkom SA

Aurecon was appointed to assist TFMC, a total facilities management company, with the cabinet roll-out project in the Western Cape on an ongoing basis. Aurecon has been appointed as a service provider to assist TFMC with the execution of the implementation phase of the project. This involves negotiations with the local supply authority for a power connection, obtaining the necessary wayleaves from the affected parties, management of the installation contractors and quality control of the final installation and handover of the completed project.

To date, close to 200 projects have been successfully completed for TFMC.

Chorus and Telecom Engineering Services Consultants Panel New ZealandClient Chorus and Telecom

Aurecon has been awarded a position on the Engineering Services Consultants Panel for New Zealand’s largest telecommunication infrastructure and service providers, Chorus and Telecom, which demerged in 2011.

Aurecon has provided engineering design and project management services on a broad range of projects including: exchange upgrades, data centre expansions, SAED mobile phone tower deployments, structural assessment and energy management programmes, as well as ultra-fast broadband (UFB) programme management.

Following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, Aurecon assisted Chorus and Telecom with detailed structural inspections of their assets in the region.

Aurecon is also working on a number of strategic initiatives with Chorus and Telecom in a true partnership approach. By combining a strong project governance and management framework with Aurecon’s global engineering skills and capabilities, an outstanding client relationship has been created which is delivering real value to our key clients Chorus and Telecom.
