The AX400 SeriesAX400 analyzers incorporate the latest technology to providehighly reliable, flexible, feature-packed devices that satisfy adiverse range of process monitoring and control applications. The complete range encompasses solutions for pH/Redox(ORP), conductivity and dissolved oxygen.
AX46x analyzers enable continuous measurements of one ortwo pH or Redox (ORP) points with simultaneous local displayand retransmission. AX46x is used with glass, enamel andantimony pH electrodes and metal Redox sensors, providingmeasurements with exceptional accuracy and performance.
AX400 Series analyzers are available for either wall-/pipe- orpanel-mounting and are rated to IP66/NEMA 4X.
High Functionality as StandardAll versions are supplied with two, fully isolated current outputsas standard, that can be assigned to the measured parameter, sample temperature or any appropriate calculated variables.
Three programmable relay set points are available that can alsobe assigned as required.
Innovative features such as power-saving display and adiagnostic current output option all contribute to a low cost ofownership.
Plug-and-Produce Expanded ControlAn advanced function card provides an additional two currentoutputs and two further alarm relays that can be assigned toeither measured values or sample temperature.
ABB Plug-and-Produce software automatically reconfigures theanalyzer if an option board is added later. No user programmingis necessary.
A real-time clock and logbook are also included making thefull-facility versions extremely powerful and versatile.
Significantly Reduced Maintenance CostsThe AX400 analyzers are supplied as standard for 85 to 265VAC operation. There are no inner switches to set.
They can also be provided for 24V AC or 12 to 30V DC supplyand recognize automatically which of the two supplies is beingused. 24V DC operation reduces maintenance costssignificantly by negating the need for costly, yearly safety tests toensure compliance with safety procedures.
Energy Saving DisplayThe backlit display has been designed to operate in all types ofenvironments and shows both the measured parameter(s) and,on a separate 16-character display line, diagnostic andcomputed information.
On dual-input analyzers both measured parameters aredisplayed simultaneously.
For conservation of energy, the backlight can be set to switch offautomatically after 60s of inactivity.
Easy-Access Installation TerminalsEasy access to the terminations ensures rapid andcost-effective installation. The wall-/pipe-mount version hasbeen designed to ensure that cable connection is simple andconvenient. Ingress protection of the electronics section isretained even when the terminal compartment cover is opened.

Dual Input Measurement for Critical DutiesThe AX400 enables two continuous measurements withsimultaneous local display and retransmission. This capabilityprovides an on-line validation of the process measurement.
Making two simultaneous measurements and configuring one ofthe set points as a difference alarm provides continuous on-linechecking and early warning of an invalid measurement.
Detecting breakthrough of ammonia in a chiller unit is madepossible with dual measurement. Comparison before and afterthe chiller ensures extremely rapid leakage detection, preventingdamage to the system.
Waste Treatment pH & Redox (ORP)pH and Redox (ORP) are essential control parameters whenremoving toxic chromium ions from waste water inmetal-finishing applications. Dual pH and Redox analyzers andintegral control simplifies installation and reduces investmentcosts.
Just-in-Time MaintenanceOne of the most vulnerable times for a pH electrode is duringreintroduction into the line. If used with a solution earth rod,AX46x analyzers with advanced diagnostic facilities can detectsensor breakages as they occur. In addition, they can detectsensors out-of-process and several reference faults for faultdiagnosis and reduced downtime.

Reduced Maintenance Through In-line CleaningMany installed pH sensors benefit from regular cleaning. Whencarried out manually, this can be laborious and costly – so isoften ignored. Advanced AX400 pH analyzers make it possibleto automate sensor cleaning by using a programmablewash-timer contact to activate a cleaning agent valve or pump.
Pulsed water-wash and jet-wash chemical clean actions arestandard, user-selectable functions. The frequency and durationof the wash can be tuned to meet the requirements of theapplication.
For chemical cleaning a 60 liter (13 gallon) sensor cleaningstation can be supplied (model no. AA0010), complete withdelivery pump and low level alarm. Chemical cleaning hasproved particularly successful on potable drinking water plantswhere manganese and iron in the sample can createunacceptably high levels of maintenance. Effective cleaningreduces cost of ownership.
Combined Conductivity and pHThe AX416 version measures conductivity and pH with thesame analyzer. The option board provides the capability toretransmit pH, conductivity and both sample temperatures. Fiveprogrammable alarms can be assigned to suit the needs of theapplication, enabling even the most demanding requirements tobe met.
AX460 Integral P, PI and PID ControlThe single input AX460 analyzers incorporate three-term PIDControl, offering three modes of sophisticated control: analog, pulse length (time proportional) and pulse frequency. These aresupplied as standard and can be operated in direct- orreverse-acting mode, dependent upon the application.
Auto/Manual and Bumpless TransferAn auto/manual feature is incorporated for rapid manual accessto the control functions. The controller facilitates bumplesstransfer between manual and auto modes, providing themeasured variable is within the proportional band and someintegral action time has been programmed.
Current Output Proportional ControlIn this case, the control signal is provided by the 4 to 20mAoutput of the AX460 analyzers rather than using thealarm/control contacts. The magnitude of the current outputchanges in proportion to the deviation from set point. Thismethod is used generally with motorized valves or whencontrolling the speed of dosing pumps with a 4 to 20mAproportional input.

Time Proportioning Control (Pulse Length)With time proportioning control, the AX460 analyzerÕs controlsignal output is in pulses, the duration of which changes inproportion to the system error. The pulses are delivered byvarying the length of time that the alarm/control contact isactivated.
Time Proportioning Control is used generally to control dosingby low-cost solenoid valves or metering pumps and is alsoknown as pulse-length proportional or Mark Space control.
Bi-directional ControlAs well as single set point control for both acid and baseaddition, the AX460 analyzer can be configured withindependent controllers.
To avoid control overlap, a minimum of 0.5pH difference (ordeadband) between the set points is essential. The differencebetween the set points varies depending upon the application.
Control of each set point can be configured independently aseither P or PI control in this mode. The setting of proportionalband or integral action can also be different for each set point.
Pulse-frequency Proportional ControlImpulse pumps dosing chemical reagents are controlled easilyby the AX460 analyzerÕs pulse-frequency proportional controloutput. In this case, the pulse length of the alarm/controlcontact is fixed and the frequency of the delivered pulsesincreases in proportion to the system error, as set by theproportional band. Diaphragm metering pumps must have aremote pulse input capability in order to utilize this function.
Pulse-frequency control in the AX460 analyzer operates bypulsing a relay on for 300ms and off for a period of timedetermined by the pulse frequency. The pulse frequency (PFr) isadjustable between 1 and 120 pulses per minute. The greaterthe difference between the measured variable and the set pointthe greater the pulse frequency.
Example
If the pulse frequency is set at 120 pulses per minute and thepercentage output is 100% then the pulse rate is 2 pulses persecond. If the percentage output is reduced to 50%, the pulserate falls to one pulse per second.
Power Failure RecoveryIn the event of a power failure the user can configure the controlmode to be Auto, Manual or Last. This optimizes controlconditions on power-up to ensure rapid recovery of processcontrol.

Wide Variety of Sensorsfor Most Industrial ApplicationsABB offers a wide variety of standard sensors for mostapplications. These include variations in body style, measuringelectrode type and shape, temperature compensator, junctiontype and shape and cable. Next Step Advantage™ sensors alsoallow choice of solution ground and O-ring materials.
Durable ElectrodesThe TB(X)5 electrode design eliminates failures due to thermalstress caused by rapid temperature excursions. Unlike othersensors that use a large inner air bubble for expansionabsorption, TB(X)5 electrodes use a unique inner plunger;providing more effective protection against temperaturefluctuations.
The glass manufacturing process uses inoffensive components. The glass contains no barium, cobalt or uranium oxides. Theimpedance is low enough to maintain signal integrity, yet highenough to remain chemically durable with little or no sodium ion(Na+) error.
The electrodes are available in several measuring element typesensuring greatest process optimization.

Sensor Models and Applications
Reference Junction StylesTo promote TB(X)5 electrode process efficiency, referencejunctions are available as either wood or PTFE, each also offeredin flush, notched, or recessed forms.
The hardwood junction is recommended for all general purposeduties particularly those requiring high resistance to coating.PTFE junctions are promoted for continuous processes over11.0 pH or those containing known wood delignifiers such asstrong caustics, bleaches and other oxidizers.
Flush junctions have no process protrusions and thereforesupply excellent self-cleaning properties when used with flatglass and fitted at 90 in process pipelines.
Notched junctions provide an integral protection guard fornormal bulb-style glasses and are especially suited forretractable and immersion sensors.
Recessed junctions are also available. They place the glass bulbbehind a 'hood' giving it protection from abrasive or high velocityprocesses.
Consult factory for availability of recessed junctions.

Models TB557 & TBX557 Hot-Tap Retractable SensorsModels TB(X)557 sensors are hot tap, ball valve insertionsensors. They enable sensor maintenance or replacementwithout interrupting the process.
An integral safety anti-blowout lip is incorporated into the sensordesign, preventing accidental sensor removal. Unlike chainrestraints, this safety-by-design is an integral part of the sensors'construction.
The sensor is inserted through a standard 11/2 in. or 11/4 in. fullport ball valve. Ease of disassembly aids sensor replacement.
Connection to a ball valve is by compression fitting available ineither hand-tight with 11/4 in. NPT threads or wrench-tight with1 in. NPT threads.
Additional fittings enable the assembly to be flushed and drainedin situ and uses a 11/2 in. NPT threads for connection to the ballvalve.

Automatic CleanersABB sensors are designed to resist fouling and pluggingespecially when placed in sufficient velocity.
Sometimes a lack of velocity or the precipitative properties of theliquid require the use of an automatic cleaner.
ABB supplies jet-wash type cleaning facilities for submersion(immersion) TB556 sensors with 11/2 in. insertion depth.
When coupled to a customer-supplied solenoid valve deliveringwash fluid, effective cleaning can be initiated by ABB pHinstrumentation such as the TB84PH or AX46 Series. Forexample, the TB84PH can be configured:
• Wash cycle time 0 to 99.99 hours
• Wash on time 0 to 999 seconds
• Wash recovery time 0 to 999 seconds
• Hold function ON or OFF
