1. Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research has been endorsed by ECU and applies to all researchers. It outlines the responsibility of researchers and of institutions in Section Two of the Code http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/guidelines/publications/r39 2. ECU’s response to the Code is laid out in the ECU Research Data and Records Management Policy http://www.ecu.edu.au/GPPS/policies_db/policies_view.php?rec_id=0000000327 3. In a nutshell these polices mean that researchers need to properly manage and retain research data and primary materials 4. ECU has a data management plan template, if you need one you can download from the GRS site under “Forms” http://research.ecu.edu.au/grs/students/form.php

HDR students need to…

Ensure the security of research data and records Retain the research data and records for

the required period Maintain the confidentiality of research

data and records Safely dispose of research data and

primary materials when the appropriate period of retention has finished.

Supervisors advise HDR students…

How to manage dataWhere to store data How to manage the confidentiality of

data How long to keep data (varies with

disciplines) If data should be retained beyond the life

of the project, how will this be done If data may have potential for re-use in

the future
