Handheld and Benchtop XRF

Chemostrat provide two portable XRF options, Handheld and

Benchtop. Our XRF instruments all have our in-house bespoke

calibration and come with full data correction and QC procedures

to ensure that our services provide the best quality data available

from a portable system in a safe and efficient manner.

Portable Solutions

Chemostrat’s service matrix includes Portable

Solutions that quickly and cost effectively acquire

mineralogical, elemental and magnetic data in

remote locations or at well-site. Due to advances

in technology and our in-house R & D programmes,

we are able to directly analyse core material in

storage facilities and/or cuttings at wellsite.

Depending on clients needs, any combination of

these solutions can be selected to solve your

problems.

Chemostrat are unique in the oil and gas service

sector in providing such a flexible array of portable

solutions. Furthermore, we bring our unequalled

ability to interpret elemental, mineralogical and

magnetic data to our service portfolio.

FTIR

Fourier Transform infrared instruments

provide a means to rapidly acquire

mineralogical data on minimal sample

volumes. Current in-house models for

FTIR provide data for quartz, feldspar,

kaolinite, illite+smectite, chlorite, calcite,

dolomite, siderite, total organic carbon

and total carbonate.

Chemostrat uses the Bruker manufactured

Alpha-P with diamond ATR FTIR system.

It is readily transportable (footprint of 22cm

by 30 cm weight c. 7 kg), allowing use in

core stores, or indeed at well-site. The FTIR is

benchtop and requires a gram of powdered

material. There are no HSE issues with the

use of benchtop FTIR’s and their simplicity

of operation means minimal training is

required to allow data acquisition. The cycle

time on the sample is less than one minute,

meaning that hundreds of samples can be

analysed in a normal working day.

1300 Typical output from HHXRF study on core

The following series of graphs display a direct comparison of XRD and FTIR data.

Benefits Minimal sample destruction (ideally 1g of rock is milled, although in exceptional circumstances we can use less)

Rapid acquisition (analysis time less than a minute) that can be carried out in remote locations

Highly cost effective method of determining mineralogy

Chemostrat recommend that

HHXRF analysis be carried out as

shown above as this is both HSE

compliant and reduces data error.

HHXRF provides non destructive direct measurement of core with no sample preparation

Benchtop XRF provides the data quality of lab-based XRF in a portable system with minimal peripheral equipment

Lithological modelling used to speed up and compliment detailed sedimentary logging of core

Calculation of ChemGR to aid with core – wireline relocation

Indicators of redox facies, provenance, feldspar content, clay mineralogy and coarse chemostratigraphic characterisation/correlation

Portable Magnetic Susceptibility

Our Bartington MS2K Magnetic Susceptibility

Sensor is readily transportable and can be used

for the measurement of magnetic susceptibility

in any solid material. It is ideal for direct

measurement of core or for use in the field.

As with the FTIR, there are no HSE issues, the

only caution required is if steel (nails, trestle

tables) is in close proximity, as it can provide

false readings. The rapid analysis means that

typically 500 to 600 readings can be made in a

working day.

If time or geographic constraints are not an

issue, Chemostrat also provides the highest

quality laboratory-based mineralogical,

elemental and magnetic data.

Our ability to integrate laboratory data with

portable data puts us in a unique position to

provide a complete laboratory to site service.

It also means that we can provide calibrations

for our portable instruments that are superior

to suppliers of solely portable-derived data.
