Dassel Covenant: A church with a Heart for Mission?

… you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

One of the healthy missional markers of church vitality is choosing to be a church fami-ly with a real heart for Christ’s mission. A heart that is willing to serve in Jesus name when and wherever He might call us to go. Luke gives us a formula for being mission-al by identifying geographical areas and he begins in the most logical place – at home.

Jerusalem = Dassel/Meeker/Wright & McLeod counties

Telling God’s story begins where we are planted. God has chosen that we would live in this community. He desires that we be His light that draws our neighbors and friends into a relationship with Him. We are able to tell our faith story within the setting of worship, a Sunday School class or Bible Study, by walking across the street to a neighbor or talking to a new resident, etc. We are all called to be Christ’s ambas-sador where we live.

Judea = Communities & Ministries nearby.

Telling God’s story is even a bit easier and fulfilling when we go to serve in a community beyond us. We have experienced this through assisting “Place of Hope” with serving meals, donating quilts and providing backpacks to homeless individuals and families in St. Cloud. Others have found opportunity to care for those beyond by

volunteering with Hospice, the local food shelf, the Scouting program and more.

Samaria = Extended Ministries out of state.

Several years ago our High School youth united together with other youth to serve with Merge ministries in Detroit. Once again this summer Ben together with

many of our youth united together with others to serve at the Cheyenne Indian Reserva-tion in South Dakota. This mission was organized by “Youth Works” and our youth

returned having been blessed by the opportunity to serve other in Jesus’ name.

The Ends of the Earth = Mexico, Japan, Congo, Ecuador, and more.

As a church family we continually support Local and Covenant missionar-ies who are called to serve globally in Jesus’ name. We also continue to be a send-ing church. This October a mission team will be serving a small Covenant church family in Rumipumba, Ecuador. Please pray for our opportunity to enhance their ministry in Jesus name. Also, Adriana Craswell has prayerfully chosen to serve with YWAM (Youth With A Mission) this year. She is going out from us and

needs our prayer and financial support. Another opportunity for all of us to be in-volved globally is to support “Covenant KIDS Congo”. On October 2nd , Rev. Donn Engebretsen will be with us to encourage us to sponsor children from the poorest country in the world – Congo. This is a cooperative partnership with

World Vision and is an opportunity for all of us to be witnesses for Jesus. This past spring our AWANA children did their part by collecting $459.30 in “noisy offerings” to provide clean water for “CKC WASH “ program that now provided

access to clean water to more than 24000 people. Now it will be everyone’s

opportunity to help with this mission by sponsoring a child.

If being healthy/missional means being a church family with a real heart for Christ’s mission, then I am pleased to say that Dassel Covenant is well on the way.

Let’s keep up the good work and strive to do even more IN Jesus’ name in the year to come!

Here is what the kids have to say about Jesus Junction Day Camp with Lake Beauty:

Luke says...

He liked the snacks.

Favorite part was water games.

He learned that God placed angels to guard the Garden of Eden.

He would go again next year, but he's to old.

They all came home singing the songs every afternoon and said that they

loved the staff from Lake Beauty!

Rachel says…

She like the water day!

She learned Bible verses like, “In the beginning, God created the heaven

and the earth” Genesis 1:1

She would go again next year!

Rachel also like the songs and loved having the Lake Beauty camp staff

here in Dassel.

The experience we had during Day Camp was fantastic. The LBBC staff

was wonderful and connected with all of the campers. They had exciting

things for them to do and learn from all week, but were flexible in chang-

ing the schedule when it was needed.

We started the week with 28 children (kindergarten—6th graders) signed

up and ended the week with 42 children. It was amazing how the campers

kept inviting their friend to join in the fun and learning about Jesus.

Having Day Camp this year in place of regular VBS was great! My hope

is that more kids connected with Jesus and will consider going to camp in

the future and attending more church activities.

"God has given you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another." 1 Peter 4:10 Soon you will have an opportunity to choose an area for serving and glorifying God through Women Ministries. As women uniting in Christ, we truly do affect the lives of others in our church family and community. Think about the things you LOVE to do and sign up for an area that speaks to your heart, interests and spiritual growth. You can also let the board assign you to an area in need, if you prefer. Please pray for guidance on where you can serve.

Do you LOVE a party? You can share your enthusiasm with those getting married and provide sup-port through guidance with what our church has to offer. You can share your creativity with one of our annual events or monthly meetings.

Wedding Consultants and Shower Coordinators assist couples by sharing information about church/community resources, planning for the special day and organizing the details of a pre-wedding church celebration.

Daughters of the King programming involves working with the Women Ministries board to plan meetings and arrange speakers and other topics of interest to our church family.

Daughters of the King Banquet groups work together to plan and organize programs with speakers and/or music, along with menu and decorations for the Salad Luncheon, Progres-sive Supper or Christmas Brunch.

Do you LOVE everything babies?

Nursery Coordinators help keep toys and linens organized and clean for all the little ones. They also line up helpers for Sunday morning worship and purchase needed supplies.

Mom to Mom Ministries offer support to new mothers through visits and invitations to Women Ministries activities.

Do you LOVE the Home & Garden Network? Members of the Flower and Altar committee help keep our church looking beautiful and festive

inside and out! They arrange and decorate the church throughout all seasons of the year and tend to the plants and flowers.

The Kitchen Committee keeps things neat and tidy in the kitchen! Members keep track of sup-plies, serving items and coordinate cleaning of ovens and coffee pots.

Ecuador Mission Team

Supplies needed! Ecuador Mission Trip The Covenant has recently opened a medical clinic north of Quito, in the area close to our work project. Our missionaries also conduct medical caravan teams that reach out to small villages to offer them medical attention where it is normally unavailable. We would like to bring some much needed medical items to Ecuador for their use. Here is what they can use:

Children's vitamins: chewable NOT gummy. Pre-natal vitamins

Ibuprofen - pills and liquid Tylenol - pills and liquid

Antibiotic cream - Neosporin and Triple Antibiotic Cream Empty pill bottles: allows them to send pills with the patient when they can't send the

entire bottle. We will have collection boxes for these items. We will be taking them to Ecuador in October, so you have time to buy a bottle here and there throughout the summer.

Children's Clothing needs: We are also going to be packing clothes to be used in the Santiago Project home for displaced children. The government will allow them to have children ages 2-18. That is a large age range, but all types of new or gently used clothing is needed. No stains or holes please. Shoes and rain boots are also needed. Think of Minnesota weather in spring and fall for types of clothing. Anything you can contribute will be used.

Quilts for the Kids: The Santiago Project Home for Displaced Children can use quilts. We will be organizing this effort over the summer months. If you would like to contribute bright cotton fabric ( from your stash) or money to buy fabric, please consider doing so. We brought down 2 quilts last year on the Vision Trip. This year we would like to bring down 8 more so that every bed will have a bright cheery quilt to keep them warm. The mountain nights can get quite chilly!

Worship Team Help Needed: If you have any ability to sing, play violin, guitar or bass guitar we could use your help. We are also in great need for one more sound tech and one more projection person. See Bill Ward or Sarah Cady.

Used drum set for sale. Some missing

components. See in the attic youth room. See Bill Ward and make an offer.

Library

The gals in the library have ordered books that will complete some of the series we have in our fiction section. Watch for them as Debbie gets them cata-loged and ready for check out. Some of these series were missing the first book, some numbers 2 and 3, and some the last installment.

We have completed a Francine Rivers series called Mark of the Lion. A Voice on the Wind is the first in the series. This series follows Hadassah and Aretres in the first century of Christianity, with gladiators, Roman domination, and life in the Germanic tribes.

Karen Kingsbury has many series. The first series featuring the Baxter family is called the Redemption series. When she is finished, Karen will have 22 books featuring the Baxter family. The Redemption series will get you started.

The last of the Yada Yada Prayer Group series is entitled “The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Decked Out”.

Lauraine Snelling has many books on the Norwegian settlement of the Red River Valley. Books 1 and 2 in the Home to Blessing Series are “A Measure of Mercy” and “No Distance Too Far”.

If you like stories of the Amish, Beverly Lewis has many. We have the final book in the Rose Trilogy, called “The Mercy”, and the final in Country Crossroads series “Sanctuary”.

Another Amish series by Amy Clipston is called The Kauffman Amish Bakery series. The library had all but the first novel. We have just added it

entitled “A Gift of Grace”. Two English teenagers whose parents have been killed in a car accident are sent to live with their aunt in the Old Order Amish community. How well do they adjust?

Watch for these as they appear in the New Book section in our church library.

What is Church Vitality? You have by now heard that our church is exploring ideas for future vitality. The term within the denomination is becoming a “healthy missional” church. The term within our own discussions is “faithful and fruitful” church. Catchwords are nice, but they often don’t carry much meaning for those outside the small group involved in the work. The shortest definition of vitality is “Doing good ministry over a long period of time along with the moving of the Holy Spirit.” That is what the manual says, but even that leaves us hanging. Taking it one step further, we define “doing good ministry” as effectively offering something here that changes lives for the better and connects people to the wonder and beauty of a personal God relationship. The Vitality Taskforce is working on identifying a future in which this church is doing that effectively. The team will be sharing much information in the next months that will help everyone come alongside that effort and be prepared to help equip and lead us in that direction. Watch for those communications in this newsletter and in your mailboxes. Vitality will not involve a quick fix. It might involve a transformation of who we are and how we function. It will not be easy. However, it might be life changing.

The following is excerpts from Elim Care Faith Community Nursing,

Summer 2016 Marcia Flom presented this message:

And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for equipping the saints for work of service, to building up the body of Christ; Eph. 4: 11-12. Many ask, “what is a Faith Community Nurse (Parish Nurse) and what do we do”? To best explain, I’m going to start with a couple stories to help you visualize what FCN nurses do that leave a huge impact on individuals, churches and communities as they of-fer hope and encouragement. Valborg, FCN a friend and mentor, who is now over 80 makes visits to an elderly woman. On a recent visit, she asked her parishioner, “what is the first thing on your mind every morning when you wake”; she was a devout Christian and expected her to say Christ or a prayer. The woman quickly responded “ Is my phone going to ring today”. Val-borg quickly identified a key need: socialization. Loneliness had become a norm for this woman and could be fixed with visits from the visitation committee. Visit, take shopping, or simply hold her hand and say a prayer. Another FCN works in a homeless shelter. She builds relationships with tenants and staff through bible studies and conducts one on one meetings and prays with many. During a visit one woman (who was in her mid-30s) confessed she could never set foot in a church again be-cause “ I had an abortion and I’m not welcome in your churches”. This began a conversation that eventually led this woman to accept Christ and be forgiven for something she could not forgive herself for. This FCN went on to explain her purpose had become very clear to her through this encounter. “Christ was calling me to show and share his love with a broken and needy world.” Nurses and pastors have common ground. Our job descriptions blend the spiritual and medical to provide care for the parishioners. A nurse can compliment the pastors role by explaining medical processes, help families discuss end of life decisions, assist individuals work through the maze of chronic illness. Together a Pastor and an FCN can make a great team as care for the whole person in the name of Jesus provides hope. **You will begin to Heal when you let go of past hurts, forgive those who have wronged you and learn to forgive yourself for your mistakes.** Cure versus Healing 1. Cure may occur without healing; Healing may occur without cure. 2. Cure separates body from soul; healing embraces the whole. 3. Cure isolates; healing incorporates. 4. Cure costs; healing enhances. 5. Cure combats sickness; healing fosters wellness. 6. Cure fosters function; healing fosters purpose. 7. Cure altars what is; healing offers what might be. 8. Cure is an act; healing is a process. 9. Cure acts upon another; Healing shares with a sister/brother. 10. Cure manages; healing touches 11. Cure seeks to conquer pain; healing transcends pain. 12. Cure ignores grief; healing assumes grief. 13. Cure rejects death and views as defeat; healing includes death among the blessed out-comes of care.
