Darley Defense Named Top Supplier by DLA

Darley has four employees from our Itasca headquarters retiring. Collectively, they served Darley faithfully for over 115 years.

Nick D’Asta served as CFO and on Darley’s Board of Directors. Steve Darley was our customer service manager in our equipment division and the leader of the Darley Family Council. Ann Praxmarer served as Bill Darley’s

assistant for over 20 years and then earned her way as Human Resources and Export Manager in our Itasca (IL) headquarters. If you’ve visited us in Chicago, you would have been greeted by Vergie Rouse, our Director of First Impressions.

We welcome John Gruber who joined Darley on December 30, 2014 as our Chief Financial Officer. John will oversee all of the financial functions within Darley.

John has fire industry experience, having previously worked for Federal Signal. He was most recently with GVW Group, LLC as its Executive Vice President of Finance. John obtained his BS degree from Marquette University in Accounting and began his career with Deloitte. He subsequently obtained his MBA from Northwestern University and his CPA in the State of Illinois. He has held various senior level finance positions with Federal Signal and Medline as well. John and his family reside in River Forest, IL. In his spare time, John is an avid tennis player and enjoys spending time with his wife, Peggy, and their young children.

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) recently announced its top performing supply contractors for Fiscal Years 2013 and 2014 as part of the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Superior Supplier Incentive Program.

Of those considered, 40 companies were selected as DLA’s superior suppliers based on CPARS ratings, along with several companies that have partnered with the DoD on recent significant cost savings initiatives. The selected companies represent eight of DLA’s major supply chains and include 13 small businesses. Darley is one of the largest 150 contractors to DLA and is proud to have received this award.

The DLA committee looked at areas such as cost, schedule, performance, quality, and business relations. “Given DLA’s mission to support our warfighters around the world, it’s important to recognize Darley for their proven track record for superior performance in government contracting,” said Matthew Beebe, head of DLA’s acquisition directorate.

According to Paul Darley, “Our Darley Defense Division is now the largest part of our business in terms of sales. We have an incredible team, comprised primarily of veterans, who are focused on relentless customer service. They are passionate about providing our warfighters with the best possible gear, competitively priced, and in an expeditious manner.”

The news came as Darley’s Defense Advisory Board (DAB) held its annual meeting, and it was a cause for celebration. The Darley DAB is comprised of military veterans who donate their stipend to military charities. Serving on the board are Navy Seals, Army Command Sergeant Majors, West Point and Naval Academy graduates and a JSOC Navy Intelligence Officer. “We feel truly blessed to have this incredible team supporting and mentoring us,” commented James Long.

Darley’s Defense Advisory Board has been instrumental in our growth.

Darley’s new CFO, John Gruber, joins Darley with industry experience.

In 60 AD, the Roman Statesman, Lucius Seneca, stated, “If one does not know to which port his ship is sailing, no wind is favorable.” It’s a profound strategic metaphor.

Like most companies our size, we write a detailed annual business plan and five-year strategic plans. At Darley we also have a 100 year plan -- we think in terms of decades, centuries and generations. While we are guided by our formal plans, we have the ability to react quickly to changing conditions and modify our plan as needed. We like to call this “adjusting our sails”.

As a 107 year old, fourth-generation, privately-held family business, we have the luxury of taking a long-term perspective on things. We benefit from not having to report to Wall Street on a quarterly basis. As a result, we have patience when it comes to seeing a return on our investments.

We are currently working on our next five-year strategic plan. It will take effect beginning in January of 2016. As we move through this process, we take an analytical look at the last four years, but more importantly, we focus on what we want to look like five, ten and even 100 years from now. During this process, we ask the hard questions: Why? Why Not? Can we do it better? How will it benefit our employees and customers? For us, it’s a very emotional process.

We’re adding a lot of new talent to Team Darley by on-boarding a new generation of family and non-family leaders. I hope that you’ll help us in welcoming John Gruber, as our new CFO, and also our next generation of family members.

We did not achieve all our goals set forth in our last five-year plan, but we did manage to double our business since we last went through this process. Our growth plans for the next five years are even more aggressive. All of this is in the hope of building a strong, diverse and sustainable business for future generations -- one that can continue to passionately take care of our customers and employees.

We have a proud past, a great team, we know where we are headed, and we are honored and humbled to serve those who protect us all so selflessly. As we move ahead with our planning, if there’s anything we can be doing to better serve you, we are happy to adjust our sails.

Once you have realized the power of Darley’s AutoCAFS™, you’ll soon understand that high flow (over 1000 gpm) fire pumps may not be completely necessary in terms of pure fire extinguishment power. The Darley HMBC fire pump boasts the ever-popular Darley HM 500 gpm fire pump coupled to our clutched 220 cfm rotary screw air compressor package. The entire unit can be driven via a single PTO and can be set up to be very compact. This pump is a great water transfer pump that also doubles as a very potent CAFS pump. This combination was designed to be mounted in the same basic way as an HM 500 and can be driven with either the 4 o’clock or the 8 o’clock PTO off the Allison automatic transmission. It also works very well mounted atop the frame in a rear mount application. Darley can set it up with or without discharge and suction plumbing or you can manufacture your own. The price is more budget-friendly than most large CAFS pump systems since this pump is sized perfectly for the 220 cfm air compressor. According to Troy Carothers, Darley CAFS Product Specialist, “This pump falls into the category of “Everything you need and nothing you don’t.”

Singapore is a city-state in Southeast Asia which is noted for its innovative and efficient Civil Defence Force which manages all fire and emergency response. SCDF has partnered with a local specialist contractor, Hope Technik Pte Ltd., to build a fleet of high

performance Light Fire Attack Vehicles (LFAV), tasked with rapid intervention. With a crew of four and a 2,000 L/M Darley pump and CAFS system, these capable units are usually first into fires and other emergencies. They are stationed throughout the city and are often seen patrolling.

The chassis were adapted, PTOs fitted and the pump sys-tem installed by Hope Technik, who also fabricated the unique

bodywork. The Darley HMBC pump with belt-driven compressor is neatly fitted into the compact layout along with breathing equipment and a deck monitor. Darley International Rep., Kevin O’Sullivan, has worked with Hope Technik Project Manager, Vic Naidu, for close to two years developing the project, which started with 11 units and has now progressed to 45.

The gas-driven ODIN® Mongoose has proven to be the right choice for ODIN®. Removing the 28 hp oil-cooled and carbureted Kawasaki, and replacing it with the 31 hp liquid-cooled, fuel-injected Kawasaki. The Mongoose was also updated with Darley’s 12-volt primer, cutting the time of prime in half from the previous model. Seeing vast improvement in the test room, and with the help of the Darley Sales team, sales have been growing for this very economical unit. We are currently building 17 units for Korea, with a strong backlog of customers.

Overall, we were able to keep the same footprint on this compact unit at 36” long, 47” wide, and 33” tall. The frame is still constructed out of the same ¼” thick square aluminum tube which keeps weight low, while offering maximum strength, and allowing the unit to be enclosed at all angles. The Mongoose is still available with a Bull Tough

ProPoly tank with foam cell. Tanks are offered as stand-alone units with all the necessary fittings to assemble on your apparatus, or pre-connected on a full aluminum skid where the only needs are fuel and power.

To put foam in your future and for additional information on any of our CAF systems, please contact ODIN® today at 319.987.2121.

PolyBilt Bodies can stand up to abuse which means longer life and lower life service cost. PolyBilt’s Patented Integration of our Polymer body and tank provides for bigger payloads and more space. If maximized utilization of space, weight, strength

OHLER PUMPS - Fast Attacks

The Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) can perform multiple tasks across a wide range of unexpected demands such as emergency situations, water supply and medical emergencies.

A few of the key versatile features of the MPV include: u Medical care service clinic for Emergency Medical

Service triage and examination. u Vehicle-mounted water purification system which

can produce up to 5,000 gallons per day of safe drinking water. This treatment system is tested to the US EPA Standard for microbiological water purifiers to effectively remove particulates, turbidity, bacteria, viruses and cysts.u Firefighting system enabling effective fire suppression with 250 gpm @ 150 psi complete with a Poly

tank effectively avoiding cross-contamination between hazmat scenes. The MPV is modular in design and can be specifically tailored to meet the

demands of any customer. This allows for optimal asset utilization and maximized return on investment. Communities cannot afford inefficient use of funds or continued reliance on ineffective or dilapidated equipment.

Within the United States, the medical triage and examination capability is an interesting concept with unlimited benefits to first responders. The integration of these critical functions, especially with high-risk EMS patients, is especially advantageous for local EMS teams and fire departments facing budget and staffing issues. A proactive approach to medical in-home health dispatch calls would also utilize tax credits.

The multi-purpose concept has unlimited potential for disaster response within the US and developing countries. For more information, please contact [email protected].

My first reaction is that pumps are getting smaller, but that’s misleading. Smaller pumps are gaining in capacity and firefighting

effectiveness, all while taking less vehicle space. For instance, our PS series of pumps was originally designed as a 1250 gpm rating. Over the years, improvements in the design of the pump casing and impeller have allowed it to increase to ratings of 1750 gpm, and future development will allow ratings of 2000 gpm, all with the same overall outside dimensions. Similar increases in capacity have occurred on many different models. This has allowed trucks to pack in new features from CAFS to water purification while gaining in overall compartment storage space.

While pumps have higher capacities, the engines now available deliver increased power. Our older rating charts list predominantly gasoline engines, and even the few diesels listed are only rated to 300 hp. Today it is possible to buy a chassis with a 600 hp power plant capable of powering a pump to a 3500 gpm rating and beyond.

We all know that fire trucks are called on to do many more operations than fires, and the trend is headed towards more versatile vehicles. Vehicles are being made that can extinguish a blaze or provide rescue support. Many trucks assist with hazmat or decontamination, and still provide effective firefighting when it’s needed. Some trucks are now equipped with compartments for transporting injured patients. As the needs have changed,

so have the vehicles and training of the operators and users. Spraying water on a fire is simple com-pared to how to oper-ate some of today’s ancillary equipment such as foam, extrication equipment, and decontamination. This is not to say any of these tasks are difficult, but to remind everyone that training and practice are paramount.

Darley strives to keep systems simple and easy to understand and this is evidenced by our success around the world. It’s our way of keeping the fire industry firing on all cylinders.

W.S. Darley & Co. recently hosted a pump school in Dalian China where a group of professionals from 23 different OEMs came together for three days to discuss various aspects of the fire industry. Going into the pump school, Darley’s purpose was to educate everyone on how to best integrate Darley fire pump solutions within their own products. This was the first time all of these individuals had met with each other in a setting outside of their own businesses. Through open discussions, it was learned that many of the obstacles faced have already been solved. There were many opportunities throughout the training and entertainment sessions to discuss these subjects at length. At the end of the pump school, our greatest accomplishment really became the helping everyone to build better products through the free sharing of information. This school was a tremendous success and now everyone who attended has a firm technical foundation on which we will build upon during our future relationship. If anyone needs help with a technical obstacle, by all means call upon us – you won’t be disappointed.

The concept of “Lean Production” originated at Toyota Motor Company as a fundamentally different way of approach-ing manufacturing. Today, manufacturers all over the world are adopting Lean principles to build things in the best, most efficient and profitable way possible. It’s a journey that never ends, but pays all kinds of rewards along the way.

Darley began thinking and acting Lean for a number of reasons back in 2010. The primary reasons were to change our culture, reduce delivery times, and reduce the cost of our manufactured products. These three goals still drive our Lean journey forward.

One principle of Lean is to work continu-ally, sometimes slowly, but always toward making progress and improvements to our company and its operations. This has been part of Darley’s culture for the past 107 years. Our culture continues to evolve over time. We continue to embrace family ownership, while at the same time bringing on non-family members to professionally manage parts of our business.

What does Lean mean to our customers? We hope that it shows a commitment from Team Darley to making continuous improvements for you. We work hard every day to improve our Customer Service, and improve the quality and delivery time of our products, all the while reducing manufacturing costs.

We are proud that our products are “Manufactured in the USA.” We want to assure you that “Lean” is central to our long-term business plans. We promise to make every effort to be innovative, because we are driven to meet or exceed our customers’ expectations.

Upon completion of her undergraduate program, Audrey accepted a position at MB Financial Bank in Chicago, where she served as a commercial credit analyst for two years followed by a relationship manager for two years. Her career in banking enabled her to develop skills in risk management, profitability, and customer service. Audrey commented “It was in the relationship management role that I learned I am genuinely passionate about helping customers through their issues.”

In the fall of 2014, Audrey made the decision to transition to the family business, where she would support the rapidly growing pump division. She is currently operating as an Account Manager, serving OEMs, their dealer networks, and end users. “Knowing your customer is critical in this industry given there is a deeper meaning to this type of sales,” said Audrey. “Our products are used to save lives and first responders rely on us to provide high quality equipment. I am very privileged to be a part of that.” Over the past few months, Audrey has attended a number of tradeshows including FDSOA, Fire Rescue East, and Firehouse World.

When asked how it is working out at Darley, Audrey stated “Working with family is really fun but even beyond that, W.S. Darley as a whole has a great company dynamic with a solid corporate structure. Everyone lives by the company values and works as a team. I am very enthusiastic about the years ahead.”

Outside of work, Audrey likes being active and participates in volleyball leagues throughout Chicago, where she resides. She enjoys attending sporting events (Cubs, Bulls, and Bears) as well as concerts. Audrey is also involved in the Catholic Charities Junior Board and the YPO Next Generation Committee.

Darley Hosts Pump School in China

To Stay In The Race

Jeff DarleyExecutive VP, Chief Operating [email protected]

Darley engineers recently conducted pump and CAFS training for 23 OEMs in China.

Weis Fire has been in the industry for over 50 years and despite a long-standing relationship between our two family-owned businesses, Weis had ordered only a handful of Darley pumps and a dozen ODIN® foam systems. After investigating further and com-paring Darley pumps to the manufacturer they had been partnering with for years,

Mike Weis and the team at Weis Fire decided Darley pumps are much more efficient and have performance advantages while coupled to the same engines. Additionally, the performance capabilities and higher quality components of Darley pumps come in at a very competitive price. Darley is now the pump of choice at Weis Fire and we are proud to announce Weis Fire as the newest Darley Demander. We recommend checking out their products featuring Darley pumps at FDIC, booth #4711, or on the web at weisfiresafety.com.

Geneva Darley is the ten year old daughter of Christina and Jim Darley, National Sales

Manager of the Fire Pump Division. There are currently 33 fourth-generation Darley family members who are descendants of William S. Darley.

Geneva (Gigi) has a twin sister Nicole, a 5 year old sister Jasmine, and a 14 year old brother Gabriel. She also has an adopted dog named Jet, that she begged for, but rarely walks.

Outside of school, she’s an avid reader, aspiring trumpet player and very much into athletics playing in the spring and fall soccer league and figure skating at the local rink during Chicago’s winter months.

In the summer months, she spends a lot of time swimming, taking after her grandfather, Bill Darley, who was all state champion in free style during his high school years. She’s looking forward to going away to camp for the first time this summer.

Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand and has a magnificent harbour with the Hauraki Gulf on its doorstep. Nearly all of the 1 million inhabitants of the city are avid members of the boating community. New Zealand has twice staged and won the America’s Cup Race. This level of marine activity places unique demands on emergency services which has always responded at a high standard.

The Coast Guard operates as a charitable volunteer organization staffed by boating enthusiasts similar in scope and dedication to a volunteer fire brigade.

Their newest Rescue Vessel is built by Q-West of Whanganui, who enjoy a worldwide reputation for their production of ferries and special vessels. Pictured to the right is a foil-assisted catamaran with twin Scania engines and NZ-built Hamilton waterjets. A Power Take-off from one of the ZF gearboxes drives a Darley 1.5AGP fire pump which supplies a deck monitor and discharge outlets and drives a special ejector salvage pump for dewatering flooded vessels.
