What is Darfur?
• Darfur is a region located in the west of Sudan, Africa
• Arab Muslims and
African Muslims
live in Darfur.
What is going on in Darfur?• Basically, Muslim Arabs are killing Muslim
blacks in Darfur
• The Sudanese government sends Janjaweed, who are armed militia to Darfur
• The Janjaweed destroy villages and kill everyone who lives there
• They gang rape women and children, shoot men, and separate families
How is this a genocide?
• about 400,000 people have been killed
• over 3 million people have been displaced
• Thousands are starving
Why haven’t we stopped this?
• There are many organizations that are working to help Darfur, but not enough actions are taken by the government
• The Sudanese government wouldn’t let the UN peace keepers into the country, so the UN couldn’t help stop this
• Our government is afraid to pressure Khartoum because he might stop giving us information about suspected terrorists
• Many people don’t even know what Darfur is• As students, we have the responsibility to do all
that we can to help put a stop to this
How does this affect us?
Suggested solutions
• The least we can do is raise awareness about the situation in Darfur
• Here are other possible solutions for US Congress to consider.
• Darfur: The 2009 Supplemental Appropriations Bill provides $50 million to support peacekeepers, the peace process, and the new diplomatic team under the Special Envoy for Sudan.
• Darfur: House Resolution 241 comments International Criminal Court for issuing a warrant for the arrest of Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir, President of the Republic of Sudan, for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Ask Rep. Waxman to cosponsor.
Why we should take actions
• Innocent people are losing their homes, starving, and being killed every day, and we have the power and responsibility to stop it
• We signed a UN treaty to stop future genocides
Why we shouldn’t take actions
• Its not our problem
• America has its own issues to deal with
• Its not worth risking a war
Who do we write to about Darfur?
• US Senator Dianne Feinstein• US Senator Barbara Boxer• US Rep. Howard L. Berman• US Rep. Henry A. Waxman
