Create a Test Using Respondus

1. Open Respondus.2. Click the “Create” button to start a new, blank test.3. Enter a name for the test and a Description and click OK.


4. Choose the type of question that you want to create. You can choose:

Multiple ChoiceTrue and FalseEssay/Short AnswerMatchingOrderingFill in the BlankMultiple Answers


As you create questions, they will list at the bottom of the screen

And as always, it is a good idea to SAVE FREQUENTLY!


Multiple Choice1. Name the question.2. Type the question itself.3. Enter the possible answers (with one correct answer).4. Choose the correct answer from the drop down list.5. Assign a point value to the question.6. Click “Save Changes”, “Add to End of List” or “Insert into List”.

You can use the “Page Down” and “Page Up” keys to navigate through your answers.Multiple Choice questions can only have 1 right answer.Point values can only be transferred to the Blackboard server if an actual exam is uploaded (opposed to just a question pool).


Tip: You can add formatting to your questions and answers via two methods:1. Select the text you wish to format.2. Use the formatting toolbar at the top of the screen to choose options such as bold, underline, and italics.3. Right-click your mouse, and chose formatting options from the context menu.

Tip: You can use the “General Feedback” button to provide optional feedback to test takers.


Tip: To edit a question you have completed, you can double click the question in the list at the bottom of your screen.When the edit window pops up, you can click “Modify.”This will take you to the question.


Essay/Short Answer1. Name the question.2. Type the question itself.3. Provide any optional feedback to test takers.4. Assign the question a point value.5. Click “Save Changes”, “Add to End of List” or “Insert into List”.

Tip: General Feedback is an excellent tool when creating a sample test to be used as a study tool.


Tip: You can use the insert into list to place a question into an existing list of questions. Type in the number of the question that you want your new question to appear AFTER.

You can use the clear form button to start over again on your question.


Matching1. Name the question.2. Type the question itself.3. Enter the matching items as shown here: Make sure that each row contains the item and its’ matching pair.4. Assign the question a point value.5. Choose to keep the list in order or not.6. Click “Save Changes”, “Add to End of List” or “Insert into List”.

Tip: General Feedback can be entered by clicking the “General Feedback” button.


Tip: To see what a question will look like to your students taking the test on Blackboard, you can click the “Preview” button.


Ordering1. Name the question2. Type the question itself3. List answers in the left box in the CORRECT order. In the right box, list the numerical order in which you want the answer choices to appear.4. Assign a point value to the question.5. Click “Save Changes”, “Add to End of List” or “Insert into List”


Tip: You can change the question type while you are working on it by choosing a question type from the tabs on the right.


Fill in the Blank1. Name the question2. Type the question itself3. List all anticipated possible responses.4. Assign the question a point value5. Click “Save Changes”, “Add to End of List” or “Insert into List”

IMPORTANT: There is no option to self-grade Fill in the Blank questions. Unless you can anticipate all possible responses for a fill in the blank question, the Essay/Short Answer is usually a better bet. Blackboard will automatically grade all Fill in the Blank questions. If the student’s answer is correct, but not on the list you created, Blackboard will assign zero points.


Tip: Respondus saves your test to your hard drive in a Respondus file. Even after you post your test to Blackboard you can go back and edit it. Also, you can take a test in Respondus, edit it, and save it under a different name.

On the left-side box, place a capital X in the box if that answer is a correct choice4. Assign the question a point value5. Click “Save Changes”, “Add to End of List” or “Insert into List”

Note: No partial credit is awarded for the multiple answer questions. Credit is only given when ALL possible correct answers have been selected


Finished?

1. Save your test file.2. Go to “Preview and Publish.”


Using a pre-existing test in Respondus

1. The test you are importing must be in a Rich Text Format (*.rtf), or a plain text format (*.txt)2. Make sure that the file you are importing is closed3. Click the “Import Questions” button

4. Choose the type of file you will be importing. You can choose Text or Rich Text5. Click the “Browse” button to locate the file you will be importing. Double-click the file you will be importing, or click “OK” once you have selected your file



6. You can append the questions from your file into a test you are already working on, or create a new Respondus test from your imported file7. If you are creating a new documents, provide a name, and choose if it is going to be an exam or a survey

Note: Respondus is “picky” about file imports. The file must be in the format detailed in the instruction manual, or you test questions may not import properly



9. Click the preview button to see if your questions are recognized10. Errors (if any) are listed at the bottom of the window11. If all of your questions imported, click the “Finish” button

Note: If you see errors at the bottom of the window, go back to your file, and see if you have formatted it correctly



12. Click “OK”. Respondus has saved your test file.13. You can continue to modify this test, or upload the test if you are finished with it.


Publishing your Respondus Test to your Blackboard Course®

1. Make sure that your test file is saved.2. Go to “Preview and Publish.”3. Click the “Preview the File” button.

4. You can navigate through your questions to see how they will appear to your students.5. If you want to modify a question, click the “Modify” button.



6. Click “Close” when you are done previewing your test.7. You are now ready to publish.8. Click the “Publish to Blackboard” button.



9. In the “Choose Server” field, choose “add new server.”10. When the “Blackboard Server and Course” window pops up, MINIMIZE Repsondus and open your web browser.11. Go to the login page for GTCC blackboard, but DO NOT login.



12. Click the address listed in the address bar.13. Go to the “Edit Menu.”14. Choose “Copy.”15. Go back to your open Respondus program16. RIGHT-CLICK in the first field, and click “Paste.”



17. Go back to your browser window.18. Login to Blackboard and go to the course that you want.19. Click on the “control panel” button for that course.20. Copy and paste the web address of this page into the second field in the Respondus program (refer to steps 12-16. 21. Click the “Extract” button.



22. Type in a description for our Blackboard server23. Chose the version of Blackboard that we are using24. Type in the user name and password that yuou use to login to Blackboard25. If this is your own computer, check the box below, and you only need to do this whole procedure once!



26. Click “OK.”27. Chose the course that you placing the test into28. Chose exam or pool and provide a name29. Apply any additional settings, and click “Publish.”30. The status field will indicate the publishing progress.Note: Respondus will prompt you to update the

software if yours is out dated. Click OK to receive the latest software updates from Respondus.
