Aylyn: Eyes: Silvery Blue Hair: Dark Brown

Personality: Mostly very quiet, usually alone, doesn’t seem to have any friends, but seems happy, draws, writes poetry Drago: Eyes: Bright Green Hair: Dyed Bluish Black

Personality: One of the sort of popular kids, but not a jock. Has many friends, but not very close to any of them, incredibly attractive, draws.

Aylyn sat, as always, at the desk in the corner as far away from the teacher as possible. She always had the best grades, but that didn’t mean she

had to act like it. She kept to herself, never volunteering to answer questions, and only speaking when called on. Aylyn always worked alone. There

was an odd number in her class, so she was always left without a partner, but she preferred it that way.

Drago was the exact opposite. Drago had passing grades, but he didn’t excel, never putting in enough effort to receive outstanding grades, but

just enough to keep a 2.0 GPA. He had several “friends,” but he never confided in any of them. He was in the popular group, but he never went to any

of the parties and wasn’t a member of any sports team.

Drago had seen Aylyn sitting alone under the big oak tree in the courtyard before, but he’d never seen her face. She was always bent over a note-

book, a curtain of hair hiding her face. Drago didn’t dare go talk to her, always afraid of what the rest of the group would think.

Aylyn knew of Drago. She had seen him looking at her in the courtyard, and she had spent several minutes every morning looking at him, always

through her curtain of hair as she pretended to write in her notebook. She was afraid to let him catch her looking. He would tell his friends, and they

would all make fun of her; she was sure of it. Aylyn sighed and began to write, her thoughts and feelings seeming to flow endlessly from her mind

through her arm and onto the page. Then, she heard a collective “Oooooooooooohhhhhh!!!!!!” from across the courtyard. She glanced up, expecting to

see one of the football players getting reprimanded by a teacher, but was shocked to see the back of Drago’s head, unmistakable with its blue – black

dye, being led into the building by the counselor. This was strange; Drago usually didn’t participate in the wrong doings of his group of friends. He was

usually just in the background. But before Aylyn could think any more on this, the bell rang. She gathered up her things and walked to homeroom.

Drago was scared when the counselor came outside and called his name, asking him to come into the building. He left his friends, jeering as they

usually did when one of the group was in trouble, and followed the counselor to her office.

“Drago, I’ve noticed your grades are just passing,” the counselor said. “You were top of your class at your old school. What happened?”

“I don’t know, Miss.” Drago said, “Didn’t want to stick out anymore I guess.”

“Well, your teachers have seen your transcripts from your previous school and believe you would benefit from higher level classes.”

“Ummm…..ok.”

“So, your schedule has been changed,” she said, handing Drago a schedule. “Your new homeroom is room 217.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Drago sighed, and left to go to his new homeroom.

Aylyn was sitting in homeroom in her usual seat writing another poem when the door opened. She looked up to see who was coming in and

gasped. Drago? Why was he here?

“Oh,” said the teacher. “You must be Drago. The counselor told me you would be coming. You can partner with Aylyn. We are just about to start

an activity.”

“Ok… who’s Aylyn?” Drago asked, looking around.

“M-me.” Aylyn said, barely audible.

Drago looked toward the voice, and his heart skipped. It was her, and she was looking right at him, her silvery – blue eyes shining, her face

framed by her dark brown hair.

Time seemed to slow down as Drago walked toward her. She hardly dared to breathe. He sat down in the empty desk next to her. She glanced at

him through the corners of her eyes. All of a sudden, Drago turned towards her.

“Hi,” He said “I’m Drago.”

“I-I’m Aylyn” she mumbled. How could this be? The popular, most gorgeous boy she had ever seen was talking to her. She turned to face him, and

her heart stopped. His eyes were a brilliant shade of green that clashed oh so perfectly with his hair.

“You have really pretty eyes.” Drago said quietly as the teacher began to explain the activity.

Aylyn felt her face get hot and looked down at her notebook quickly.

“Thanks,” she mumbled “I-I like you too. I-I mean your eyes… I like your eyes too!”

Aylyn and Drago

By Raelee McCubbin

Dammit! she thought. Way to go genius!

Drago turned around, pretending to look at the clock, and smiled as his heart leapt.

She said she liked me! he thought.

He turned back toward Aylyn, and as he did so, his arm knocked his notebook off the desk. It fell open to his drawing of a gi rl

sitting under a tree.

Aylyn caught a glimpse of the drawing and asked Drago what it was.

“Oh… just… well….. It’s you,” he stammered, handing her the notebook.

Aylyn opened the notebook and found the drawing. She stared, open-mouthed at the page. Every detail was perfect. It was as if

she were looking at a photograph.

“This….It’s amazing,” she said.

“T-thanks.” Drago mumbled. “Hey, I know this is sudden. But one of

my friends is having a party and….well….”

“Sure,” Aylyn said, packing her things away.

“Huh?”

“I’d love to go with you.”

“Oh! Ok! Well, it’s Friday. Here. I’ll write the address, and my cell

number. Text me, ok?”

“Sure!”

Friday night, Aylyn arrived at the address that Drago had written for

her. There were no other cars outside.

This is weird, she thought. Where is everyone?

She knocked on the door and waited for someone to answer.

Drago heard the knock on the door. He was home alone and had everything prepared for when she showed up. He went to the

door, looked back towards the den, double-checking that everything was in place, and opened the door.

“Hey, Aylyn”

“Hey, Drago. Where is everyone? I thought it was your friend’s party.”

“Well… my friend is having a party, but I don’t usually go to them…but I do have a surprise for you. If you trust me,” he said,

winking.

“OK,” she said, a little nervously. “I trust you.”

Drago told Aylyn to cover her eyes and slowly led her through the door, down the hallway, and into the den.

“OK. Open your eyes.”

Aylyn gasped. There were candles lit, and rose petals covering the floor. There was a huge T.V. that was turned to a music

channel and was playing one of her favorite songs.

“Oh my god, Drago!” she breathed and hugged him.

“I’ll take that as a good thing then” he said, laughing.

“I’m sorry,” she said as she jumped back, blushing.

“I’ll forgive you,” he said softly, “If you forgive this.” And he kissed her.

“Ughh, Mom! Tell Robert to throw that stupid rock outside,” I said with annoyance.

“Just let him collect what he wants. He might become rich one day,” she replied with the look drop it or your grounded.

I stormed off to my room. You see, my brother Robert found this stupid rock outside, and he treasures it. It’s worthless. He can’t even

sleep without it. I turned my music on and passed out. I was awakened by Robert pounding on the door.

“Brother! Brother! I dropped my rock, and it fell in the road. Will you get it, please, please, please?” he asked, looking panic stricken.

“NOOOOO, get it yourself and get out!” I shouted. He ran off in tears. I felt kind of bad for him. I guess I should apologize. I fol lowed him

outside.

“Robert, where are you?” I yelled. This worried me. I couldn’t find him.

“Mom, Robert’s missing. I can’t find him. I yelled at him, and he ran off,” I said, but this time, I was panic stricken. “What do you mean gone?” she asked with an eyebrow raised. “He ran off. He asked me to get the rock. He dropped it in the road, and I

told him to get it himself,” I said, waiting for her response.

“WHAT? You’re grounded! Give me your phone. You should know better!” she screamed. I knew there was no arguing this time. I

messed up. I cried myself to sleep that night.

The next morning I woke up and walked into the kitchen to apologize, but my mom was crying. I went to touch her.

“DON’T! Here. I’m sure he would want you to have it,” she said as she handed me the rock coated in blood.

Later that night my mom had the police file a missing child report, but there was no luck. That night I cried again. It was my fault,

and I had to do something about it. The next morning I went to the police station to see if there was DNA or anything that could find him.

Hours went by. Finally someone came out but with a smile. How could he be smiling?

“Excuse me. My name is William. You may know me from the Rock and Mineral Museum.

You see, this rock your brother found is a 24 carat diamond, and I will give you 10 million dollars for

it,” he said with excitement.

“No, my brother held this the closest. I’m not giving it up,” I said with tears in my eyes. All

this time I had told him it was worthless.

“Is that a maybe?” he insisted. I snatched the money from his hand and threw it on the

ground and ran home. I cried myself to sleep once more.

“You were right, Robert. You were right” I cried.

“Get up! Get up! Hurry! They found him!” my mom screamed. I was putting my shoes on as

I got in the car. We drove half a mile and arrived at an abandoned house. There he was, beaten up

badly.

“Mom. Brother. Does Brother have the rock?” he sobbed.

“Yes, he does!” She cried too.

“ I always will,” I said.

“Love you,” he said.

“Love you too,” Mom and I both said. Then he closed his eyes and didn’t wake back up. They took him to blackmail us for money.

The ironic part of this was the amount: 10 million dollars.

“Hold on to those you love. You never know when it will be the last time you see them.”
