Try a New SportParticipating in sports is a fun way

to get some exercise and meet newpeople. If you’re growing weary offamiliar activities such as basketballand tennis, liven things up with one ofthese uncommon sports:

Squash. In this racquet sport, twoplayers or two pairs rally a rubber ballagainst a wall in an indoor court. Allshots must land above the tin, a metalstrip at the bottom of the wall thatechoes when a ball hits it. Afast-paced sport, squash can be an

intense cardiovascular workout.Fencing. Derived from historical

sword fighting, fencing is a sport inwhich players use blunted blades todefeat their opponent. Points areawarded when a player’s bladetouches a designated target area onthe opponent’s uniform.

Disc golf. This variation of regulargolf uses Frisbee-like discs to hit atarget, usually a basket. Just as thereare different types of golf clubs, thereare several types of discs. The shapeof the disc’s edge determines how farand how accurately it will fly.

Underwater hockey. Also calledOctopush, this sport is exactly what itsounds like: hockey played at thebottom of a swimming pool. The stickis only 1 foot long, and the puck isaround 3 pounds. Unlike ice hockey, body contact is limited, and playersmust rely on their swimming anddiving skills rather than strength.

Cooking With QuinoaIt’s cooked like rice and looks like

couscous, but it has a richer, nuttierflavor than those grain products.Quinoa is making an appearance onmore restaurant menus and recipewebsites than ever before.

Quinoa (pronounced “keen-wah”)is a grain-like crop grown for itsedible seeds. It was first cultivated inancient Peru.

Packed with protein, quinoacontains all nine essential aminoacids. It is also a good source of iron, folic acid, magnesium, vitamin E,potassium and fiber.

The seed is incredibly versatile.Quinoa, which is gluten-free, can beserved as a breakfast dish or a side,as a substitute for rice, or in stews andsalads. It also is used in bakingbreads and muffins.

Other tidbits:• Quinoa seeds have a bitter

coating that must be soaked offbefore preparing. Most packagedquinoa is pre-soaked, but checkthe label before cooking.

• The United Nations declared2013 the “International Yearof Quinoa.”

• Cook quinoa like rice: Add onecup quinoa to two cups liquid, bring to a boil and simmer for15 minutes. For extra flavor, usechicken broth instead of water.

• The Incas called quinoa chisayamama, or “mother of all grains.”
