PROBLEM:
The warehouse is not on “the quad”. This poses complaints for many students in moving their because they will not be a part of the Syracuse Community.
SOLUTION: “The” Quad
The design community will now have a place to call its own. The new “quad” will incorporate a place for students to relax and be comfortable while exhibiting their work and their fellow students work.
KEY PLAN
PROGRAM
The gallery space must interact with the current plans to locate a coffee bar, information desk and student lounge also in this area. The design for the warehouse must be flexible in order to accommodate a variety of types of presentations.

My design stems from the complaint of being away from campus. My concept is connection. Connection will take place in many forms in my design. The literal form will take place through the use of projection and live video feeds from the warehouse to campus, as well as programs abroad. Connection through the space will be demonstrated with the LED flooring which will instantly connect you to the place and act as a way finding tool. The LED coffee bar will be a prominent feature in that typically when a person sits down to have coffee alone they wouldn’t notice who was around them, with this feature, when their cup or hand touches the bar top they will instantly be connected to another person at the bar through these lights.
SANSACELL’S INTERACTIVE LED FLOOR- SHOWS TRAIL OF FOOTSTEPS. CONNECTS ONE TO THE SURFACE THEY ARE WALKING ON.
I-BAR- LED BAR. CONNECTS PEOPLE FROM ONE END OF THE SURFACE TO ANOTHER, ALLOWING A MEETING THAT MAY HAVE NOT OTHERWISE OCCURRED.
ARMSTRONG-MESH CEILING-CONNECTS LIGHTING AND ART WORK TO CEILING OF LOUNGE/GALLERY SPACE.

EXISTING CONDITIONSSUNY Upstate Medical University presented a space currently being used for empty book stacks to be changed into a scholars den. The wish was to propose an entry lobby as well as a space which would be devoted to small meetings and studying for the students of the medical school.

Libraries of the 21st century are redefining their purpose, and responding to the changing needs of their patrons. Historically, libraries were used to store massive collections of books and journals, and offered quiet spaces for individual research and reading. During the 1990s there were major advancements in computer technology, and libraries began to offer digital information.
SUNY Health Sciences Library is making a transition from the traditional information warehouse” into a vibrant active center that supports patient care, teaching, and research activities of SUNY Upstate Medical University. The Library also serves the health information needs of both the general public and health care professionals throughout Central New York. The building that houses the SUNY Health Sciences Library opened in December 1995. Now, they are interested in renovating the main entrance and transforming an unused stack area into a Scholars’ Den. They’d like to create an identity that welcomes a diverse community and communicates energy and commitment to première customer service.

My inspiration for the design of the SUNY Upstate Scholars’ Den was drawn from the image of a wine rack with wine set in it. The contrast of the rectilinear wood and the curved nature of the wine bottles drew my attention along with the contrast of the materials. The colors of the wine glass were those of deep reds and greens, which were pulled into the design of the vestibule

From the inspiration images, I chose to use a ceiling system from Armstrong. Wanting the two spaces to be cohesive, I used the same materials and colors in both, along with using the contrast of form, however I changed where I used the different forms. The 3-Form panels contrasting with the wooden bookshelf was drawn from the contras of the glass bottles resting on the wine rack

Edward Smith School is located in Syracuse, NY, and is to receive money for renovation. It was a elementary school that recently changed and now must accommodate kindergarten through eighth grade. The client explained the inclusive nature of the school having 30% special needs students. The current conditions included a cafeteria combined with an auditorium, a gym that was too small, along with other problems such as accessibility. The client requested a larger gym, a separate auditorium, and referenced having problems with the older and younger children sharing a cafeteria.

The re-design of Edward Smith School will engage the imaginations through unique spaces that balance playfulness and productivity. A thoughtful mix of vibrant color and natural elements define Ed Smith’s sense of identity.

THE DEN
The den is a centralized multi-use space. It can be used as an alternative classroom, a presentation area or a place for multiple classes to meet at once. Entering off of the hallway, a movable panel system gives the illusion of a de constructed wall. The push and pull of these elements create a dynamic focal point near the main entrance of the school. It also acts as a unique gallery where student artwork can be displayed.

Syracuse Univserity’s College of Visual and Performing Arts is proposing the addition of a retail store that would consist of the work produced in this college. Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse Univserity consist of The School of Art and Design, The Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies, The Department of Drama, The Setnor School of Music, and the Department of Transmedia, all of which will have a part in this store, includiing the alumni of the university.
My design proposal is based on the word in situ. In situ is a Latin phrase meaning in the place, or as is. I am proposing a retail store that gives the impression of being in the artists studio.situated in the original, natural, or existing place or position

Steelcase Raised Flooring System
Our firm’s idea is the connection of people in relation to spaces. We treated our design as a computer itself, the workers as the software and the furniture systems as the hardware. The people provide the communication and transfer of ideas across the office. The design allowed this by disbursing the collaboration areas evenly throughout the space. This concept is reinforced visually through a semi-transparent floor material that covers all the electrical connections in the office. The floor will be lit internally by LEDs reinforcing the cable connections through the space. This will also be mirrored on the ceiling through the use of LED strip lights guiding the worker down the general corridors.
This multi-tenent building is located in the heart of downtown Richmond. The client will be moving onto the second floor and can use all or part of the floor. The main core supplies elevators, rest rooms, mechanical, telecommunication and electrical areas. The floor has three fire-rated egress stairwells. The space also provides 13’-6” ceilings for optimal room for design
