Chi siamo?

Dante Alighieri)

From the President

Much has happened since the last issue of Vita Nuova in December and the news is very positive indeed. The year got off to its usual fes-tive start with our participation in Carnevale in February (see picture inside). This event, more than any other during the year, brings the work of the Dante to the attention of the Italian community and the general public of South Australia.

March saw the start of another season of Cineforum (see report in-side) which this year will feature films and presentations on the theme “Su e giú per l’Italia”. If you have not made it to Cineforum yet, there’s plenty of time to enjoy a couple of hours of filmic interest. The next film to be held on 5 June is Diaz the 2012 film by Andrea Molaioli . Make a night of it, get a group of friends together and come along.

The Italian classes for adults also started in March. This year we are running three classes: one for absolute beginners (A1), one for contin-uers (A2) and one for intermediate speakers of the language (B1). We had intended to run a class for children on a Saturday afternoon and, while we had some interest from parents, the range of ages of the children concerned made it difficult to organize everyone into the one class.

Last month we received the news I had been hoping to receive for the past three years. Acting Consul, Orietta Borgia informed me that our proposed program for the teaching of Italian in South Australian schools had been approved. It was a case of third time lucky. The Dan-te Alighieri Society of South Australia has at last been recognized offi-cially as ente gestore. Armed with this good news, I wasted little time in setting up meetings with the SA Education Department and the Catholic Schools Office in order to get the program started as soon as possible.

I can hardly emphasize enough how important this is in terms of the future of Italian learning and teaching in South Australian schools. While the initial grant is quite modest with respect to past funding of enti gestori in Adelaide, it is an important start upon which we hope to build in the future. At last we can begin to reverse the trend of dimin-ishing Italian enrolments in South Australian schools.

With the Italian government funding and our own contribution, Dante will employ a number of qualified Italian language assistants who will work closely with Italian teachers in the classrooms of selected schools. We also hope to be able to introduce Italian in some schools that have never taught the language before.

Letters calling for Expressions of Interest will shortly be sent to all state and catholic schools to gauge the level of interest in hosting the Italian language assistants and to select the schools that demonstrate the greatest commitment to the teaching of Italian.

From the President (cont.)

Giovani della Dante

Good news also for the Giovani

della Dante. Considerable grass-

roots work is being done to

bring together university stu-

dents and young professionals

with an interest in all things Ital-

ian. Students of Italian at the

University of South Australia

have recently formed an associ-

ation which will work closely

with similar associations at Ade-

laide and Flinders Universities.

The Dante, through the coordi-

nation of Raff Piccolo and Talis

Evans, hopes to be able to sup-

port the enthusiasm for Italian

language and culture being

demonstrated by our young as-

sociates and looks forward to

collaborating on many future

social and cultural events.

Social Events

On the social front, I was disap-

pointed that we had to abandon

the Pasta Night we had planned

for the 30th of March due to a

poor response. Nil desperan-

dum. On the 31 may, the Gio-

vani della Dante (formerly Itsa),

in conjunction with Felici Es-

presso Bar, are hosting an

Aperitivo to celebrate this year's

Festa della Repubblica.

As you will read further on, we

are also planning a Pizza Night

in July, just in case you thought

your carbohydrate levels were

getting too low!

Lettura Dante

The second annual Dante lec-

ture will be held Monday 27

May from 7 pm at 113 Gilbert

Street premises. We have once

again invited Associate Profes-

sor Diana Glenn to deliver the

commemorative lecture. The

topic of this year’s lecture will

be: “Dante’s Inferno: Desire and

the Body”.

Members who attended the first

Dante Lecture last year will re-

call how thoroughly engaging it

was. I hope to see you all there

again! As was the case last year

we will also hand out the PLIDA

certificates of proficiency in Ital-

ian to the successful students

who passed their exams last

year.

importante : La siciliana ribelle (Marco Amenta,

Happy family (Gabriele Salvatores, 2010).

film italiano. Ultimamente ha presentato i film

C'eravamo tanto amati di Ettore Scola (1974),

Mediterraneo (Gabriele Salvatores, 1991), Nessu-

no mi puo' giudicare (Massimiliano Bruno, 2011) e

chissa' quali altre sorprese ci riserveranno le pros-

sime trasmissioni...

A presto!

Gentile Presidente, gentile Responsabile,

Alessandro Masi)

Italian with a “CLIQ”: a quality mark for Italian language

teaching abroad

The Secretary General of the Societa' Dante Alighieri, Alessandro Masi, has been named Vice President of the governing body of “CLIQ – Certificazione Lingua Italiana di Qualità” (Quality Italian Language Certification). This new unified certification system, which was launched in February 2013 by the Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi, provides Italy with a linguistic quality mark that can be clearly identified by foreigners wishing to study Italian. The four bodies responsible for certifying Italian language skills for foreigners are the Dante Alighieri Society, the University for Foreigners in Siena and in Perugia, and the University of Roma Tre. Clearly, the PLIDA certificates of Italian language proficiency have gained added value and are recognised as complying with the best international practice in language certification. The Dante Alighieri Society of South Australia and that of Sydney are the only PLIDA exam centres in Australia.
