Human Dignity, Rights and the Common Good

Accomplish:

Human Dignity - is something that can’t be taken away, that each and every person has value, are worthy of great respect and must be free from slavery, manipulation and exploitation

RIGHTS – are legal, social, or ethical principles of freedom or entitlement; are the fundamental normative rules about what is allowed of people or owed to people, according to some legal system, social convention, or ethical theory.

COMMON GOOD – the sum of those conditions of social life which allow social groups and their individual members, relatively thorough and ready access to their own fulfillment.

& security.• Peace among nations• Just legal political system• Unpolluted natural environment• Flourishing economic system

Issues with great impact to humanity:CLIMATE

CHANGEalso called global warming, refers to the rise in average surface temperatures on Earth. An overwhelming scientific consensus maintains that climate change is due primarily to the human use of fossil fuels, which releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the air.

The Problem of Pluralistic Society1. Philosopher said the very idea of common good is inconsistent and the different people have different ideas about what is worthwhile or what constitute “the good life form human beings”.

mangingisda• Environmentalist

2. Individuals can become “free-riders” by taking the benefits the common good provides while refusing to do their part to support the common good.

The Free-rider Problem

Example:• Adequate water supply.- Its is common good from which

allPeople benefits but to maintain an adequate supply during a drought, people conserve others are reluctant to do their share.

The Problem if Individualism3. Societies where there are historical traditions that place a high value on individual freedom, on personal rights, and allowing each person to “do her own things”.

4. Maintaining a common good often requires that particular individuals or groups bear costs that are much greater than those borne by others.
