Hey guys welcome to Living Func5onality! This magazine came to be because I needed to find that perfect inspira5on for a room and didn’t know where to look. With all different room-‐specific issues, one is bound to find something they love in the magazine if not everything! I am a student at East Carolina University but live permanently in Hampton Bays, NY. This issue is being published because of all the students out there who want a liOle style in their rooms but don’t know how to make it
a space they love. Personally these are some of my favorite projects. You’ll find in my designs that I’ll Always Incorporate The beach Or water Because That’s Where I draw 80% of my inspira5on from, the
rest coming equally from music, ar5sts, dancers and super original and out of the box furniture design. I hope that you find in our magazine the inspira5on or incen5ve to make any space amazing!

Straight horizontal lines create length and strength as shown in this image.

Cross walks are found all over college campus to show where students should cross the road safely.
The curved flowing line of this brick wall creates a barrier between the walkway and the grassy area and also serves as a great seating area between classes! 7
Bike racks are essential on college campuses and show some serious curved lines!

Implied texture is found on
many common work surfaces in a dorm room or building. For example, this wallpaper in an apartment
shows a texture but is just a
print! 10
Flat paints are non-‐reflec5ve and are very
prac5cal in spaces that need heavy upkeep like this
chapter room in a sorority house. 12
Shiny 5le floor has a reflec5ve texture and can make a small dorm look
brighter!
13
14
Task ligh5ng is u5lized in spaces where work needs to be completed and are very convenient in a dorm room for extra ligh5ng on your work.
15
Natural light is the light you get from outdoors so a space is most desirable with
maximum natural light, so arrange your room accordingly!
16
17
Floor lamps can give off any extra light you need in a room, as long as you have some extra square footage for the lamp!
18
Table lamps are decorative and offer some functionality
to a given space.
19
A monochroma5c color scheme creates a calm environment and is easy to decorate! Repurposing a dresser like this is a cheap way to decorate your apartment or house!
20
A neutral paleOe is easily used to decorate your space and is ideal for a kitchen or ea5ng area in your home! 21

Savvy DIY storage projects can create a ton of positive space to be utilized in a room. We all know how precious a couple inches of storage becomes!
23
An easy way to use negative space in a kitchen is
to apply shelving on an otherwise useless surface like
in this students home.
24
25
Abstract shapes are said to promote curiosity and challenge people to think so, there’s no wonder why you can see abstract shapes and sculptures almost everywhere!

Visual Symmetry
30
Layering wall decorations is an easy way to make a pop of obvious symmetry in a room
31
Columns in structure show structural symmetry and tend to create a grand feel for a room or a building.
34
35
The large blue letters are in proportion to the rest of the house because they are easily seen and take up an appropriate amount of space on the house.
36
It is obvious when an object
is not in proportion to
its surroundings
like small
furniture in a
large room or
vice versa.
37
A large wall decoration is an easy way to draw the eye and looks great in any room
A Pop of dark wood brings attention to the cabinets
and woodwork
Human Scale
Symbolic Scale
Ceiling beams can make the scale of a room look more human-like with the help of large furniture and décor.
Any room that seems comfortable to live in to normal people is generally to human scale
Having a repeated factor in a space creates a smooth
rhythm and is easy on the eyes because there
isn't too much distraction.
The lines in the window panes show a difference in
horizontal and vertical lines bit similar in that they
shouldn’t distract from the design
Each tree standing in the same sized framing gives a unified and clean look.
Using a simple color scheme in a room will bring it together and make the room like crisp and uniform.
