IAC - Childrens Advocay Center - Tucson Arizona

Pima County contracted Merry Carnell Schlecht Inc. to design and complete the construction of a building to facilitate social and family services specializing in abuse and neglected children. In addition to children services, in the near future elderly adult services are to be conducted from the same complex.

The building form developed from an in depth program analysis of the clients requirements, each individual social service, and the requirements of their users.

The program analysis required:

Interview rooms that had partition STC 45-• 50 or higher, so that normal spoken word could not be heard, return air ducts that could not pass verbal communications, and CCTV system to record and store the process. Each Interview Room required an adjacent space for visual observations through a 2-way mirror.

Pre and Post Interview spaces to relax the • children after each questioning. These rooms require much attention due to the stresses that the children are subjected to before and after the interviews, especially if medical examination is required.

Medical suite for physical examinations with • 2 examine rooms, including a laboratory for specimen use and storage, and its own private bathroom. Including an Doctors Offi ce Suite.

A community meeting space for during • and after work hours, provided with

a kitchenette and break room that is accessible separately by building staff.

Offi ces for Las Familias, Child Protective • Services, Tucson Police Department, Pima County Sheriff Department, amoung other civil services.

Tohono O’Ohdam Adult & Juvenile Detention Center - Sells Arizona

The Tohono O’Ohdam Indian Nation contracted Merry Carnell Schlecht, Inc. to provided complete design and construction administration services for a new adult and juvenile detention center in Sells Arizona.

The project was situated between 2 existing building, the existing adult detention center and the juvenile detention and court build. One of the criteria for the design direction was to join the 2 buildings into one complex, this created an opportunity for MCS, Inc. to solve dramatic site constraints. The new building would key in between the building and cusp the adult detention center.

The 2 plans shown to the right and below are the new work plans; shown in black poche and the existing is shown in gray. The plans show the complexity that the site created, not only the close proximity of the buildings but also the site sloped from the east to the west.

The program analysis required:

Refurbishing existing adult facilities to • administration suites.

Visitation area.•

Lawyer privileged interview rooms. •

Maximum and minimum secured areas with • exterior activity areas.

Medical suite.•

New laundry facilities.•

New full-service kitchen.•

Vehicular sallyports with intake and • processing areas.

Whiteriver School Dsitrict - Administration & Bus Maintenance Buildings - Whiteriver Arizona

The school district of Whiteriver Arizona contracted Merry Carnell Schlecht, Inc. to design and deliver construction documents for 2 buildings. The 1st would house administration offi ces and visitor area, and cold and dry storage for food products. The 2nd building housed the vehicular maintenance and the staff offi ces, which included 3 14’-0” bus-bay, oil and fl uid storage, tire storage, and parts and manuals.

My responsibilities as the initial project manager was formatting of the construction documents, selecting prefabricated steel building solutions to contain all the program elements, specifi cations, and engineer coordination. Moreover, I instructed an intern that joined the fi rm 1 year after my induction. We coordinated interior elevations, millwork details, and building wall sections.

Prior to being “laid off” in September 2008, we had assembled 80% Construction Documents and site construction had begun.

The “Aunt Susie Bench” began as a concept for a relative who had purchased a very large dining table but lack the seating equipment to accept the bottoms of the extended family. The purchased table was fabricated from heavy timbers, sawn and lathed legs, and the top was massive tongue & grooved planks. The table was fi nish to replicate a rustic, dark stained, and appear exceptional used; the type that would appear in a farm kitchen which absorbed generation of use and love.

The form evolved from an unadorned, post and plank style of bench, believing that this structure was not graceful nor original for my relative, it was scraped.

Materials began the 2nd approach to the design, fi nish Baltic Birch plywood. By selecting the materials the design had to consider fabrication of the legs and span area, which lamination is ideal. The individual pieces may stenciled onto sheets of plywood to conserve material waste, and fi nally table-routered. The arched legs-seats would be fi nger-lapped and adhered so that no continuous joint would be evident.

3 1-1/2” steel tubes would be inserted through the arches “keystone”, not only for decoration but to prevent a catastrophic collapse if the laminates fail.

The fi nished seats would be 3/4”x3-1/2” red cider planks, inserted into keys that are routered into the span.

After the rendering was fi nished I realize the similarity to catenary concrete bridges that were demonstrated in past academic structural courses. Moreover, the relative loved the design and the materials, but now desires something more simple for the table, and will used this bench elsewhere on her property.

The Desk - Tucson Arizona

The Desk Project was a requirement to provide ergonomically and utilitarian study and research surface; simple, economical, and functional were its parameters.

Due to site constraints, the usable site dimensions was 4’-0” width x 5’-0” length, and the desk must fi t within those dimensions without overlapping the existing door and removal adjacent valuable space. The economical restraints was the cost of materials and that all bearing pieces must fi t onto (2) 4’-0” x8’-0” sheets of 3/4” medium density fi berboard. The track-slide doors had to fi t within (1) 4’-0” x 8’-0” 1/4” sheet of

plywood, while still provided enough sheet area for shear-backing panel to the shelves.

The process was completed from design to fabrication to fi nish in 3 days.

This competition was supported by the American Institute for Architects Associates of Southern Arizona. The objective of the project was to encourage design solutions to re-urbanize Tucson. The requirements were to select either an existing vacant building or empty lot within the city limits, and fi nally to retrofi t the site to facilitate mix-use functions.

The site that I selected is an abandoned car dealership lot located at East Speedway Boulevard and North Magnolia Avenue. The existing structures on the site are the north complex comprising of exhibition lobby, offi ces,

and maintenance spaces. The south complex contained storage spaces and mechanic shop areas. In the design concept, these spaces would be gutted and refurbished to proved commercial suites.

Constructed over the north existing structure would be 1 fl oor of “sell-back” parking for commercial patrons. The second fl oor is reserved for business suites, and the following fl oors would be multifamily and multi-income residences. The south complex would have 2 story residences spanning the existing structure.

The site is located near the public transit on Speedway Blvd, and the high density of the proposed living units and the commercial suites would provide the fi nance stainability and encouragement for mass transit. Moreover, the residence density would provide the option for individual to live near their businesses, and provide a wider pool of employer|employee options.
