What is Nuclear Radiation?

Nuclear Radiation means particle beam such as alpha ray, beta ray, gamma ray, and neutron ray.Today, we use nuclear radiation in many way. For example, we use X-ray to examine our body.

Why is Nuclear Radiation Danger?

Nuclear radiation can harm our body because Nuclear radiation can break down human cells. Nuclear radiation is said to cause cancers. In addition, nuclear radiation can’t be seen from naked eyes.

Exposure

Exposure means that a human body is exposed by nuclear radiation. If we ingest radiological material, it is called internal exposure. Internal exposure is more danger than external exposure.

A unit of exposure is sievert [Sv].

Effects of Exposure

• 0.1-0.3mSv Radiation exposure per chest X-ray.

• 2.4mSv Global average of exposure of natural radiation.

• 250mSv Decrease of leucocyte.• 10,000mSv Most people will die.

Examples of accidents of nuclear radiation

• Chernobyl disaster (Soviet)• Three Mile Island accident (USA)• Tokai JCO Criticality Accident (Japan)• Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster(Japan)

Nuclear radiation has a lot of positive effects such as medical devices, however, nuclear radiation is very danger. If we handle nuclear radiation in wrong way, a serious accidents will be happened. We must use nuclear radiation carefully.
