Welcome to Dance Umbrella 2013. This year’s programme is concentrated in two areas of the city, King’s Cross and Stratford, where you can immerse yourself in a rich and diverse dance experience. Many festival events are free – a greater proportion than at any other time in our history – so be adventurous, try something new and have fun!

Throughout the festival, you can engage with a rich seam of international artists ‘up close’, with most performances being presented in intimate settings. Taste something new from young, promising makers such as Jan Martens. Challenge your perceptions with adventurous proponents of new dance, like Marcelo Evelin from Brazil. Be transformed by the eloquent maturity of Trisha Brown and Paul André Fortier, and join in a raucous and entertaining spectacle from Robyn Orlin, the ‘enfant terrible’ of South African dance.

To celebrate 35 years of Dance Umbrella, we’ve commissioned a photo exhibition from master dance photographers Chris Nash and Hugo Glendinning highlighting great moments in the history of the festival. Also, in a new departure, four events travel with us to multiple venues as the festival progresses. Look for the green section of the brochure to see who’s moving ‘across town’ with Dance Umbrella.

Don’t miss Springboard, the strand of our programme showcasing work by emerging artists. You can see a profusion of short pieces at three venues, all free of charge at various times around the main festival events. Check our website for details and join us to discover what the artists of tomorrow are making today.

Bringing the festival to you has been a fantastic adventure and a great privilege – something I will always treasure. FRINGE is a programme of performances, events and published materials reclaiming the fringe as a place of power. The fringe might be seen as a decoration or an excess, but can also be a movement-maker and a cheeky tactile seduction.

BELLYFLOP will be in residence over four days of the festival at three venues. Come and listen, discuss, watch performances and be part of FRINGE.

Run by an editorial collective of independent dance artists, BELLYFLOP is an online magazine that documents, reflects on, and intervenes in London’s contemporary dance scene.

Becky Edmunds and Lucy Cash (straybird) present a compelling mobile installation exploring movement and choreography across a collection of screen-based works by UK choreographers and artists. The selected film works are ingeniously housed inside a specially adapted van that will be stationed outside festival venues.

Viewers are invited into this intimate and thought-provoking world to discover these surprising treasures. Inspired by the much-loved mobile library, straybird presents new commissions alongside films adapted for this unique exhibition space.

Show of Hands is a new solo choreographed and performed by Freddie Opoku-Addaie, directed and scored by Graeme Miller, and overlooked by a mass of wooden carved hands. Dodging obstacles and provocations, ducking and diving, dancing on shadows, rising to an unknown task and driven to the final whistle, Opoku-Addaie enacts this witty and personal work.

With an inquisitive team of collaborators, Opoku-Addaie addresses preconceptions and challenges what it means to be part of a contemporary urban generation.

Enjoy two atmospheric and visually striking pieces with live music on Friday evening. TANIT and The Discerning Hours are devised by Performance Design & Practice (PDP) students from CSM, in collaboration with London Sinfonietta. Also on Friday, Slow & Easy, Hot & Spicy, the PDP student party, will infiltrate the evening with some unpredictable action around dancing, not dancing, partying and no partying. Expect the unexpected…

Over the weekend, don’t miss Raw Footage, a work created by London Studio Centre and CSM students, in which nine performers explore issues of surveillance using a blend of theatre, dance and visual design.

Dance Umbrella’s Springboard series is an opportunity for emerging talent to showcase their work in an informal setting.

TUG is a unique, multi-layered performance experience on and by Regent’s Canal, featuring a specially adapted heritage showboat. For the lucky few, TUG onboard is a whimsical and immersive performance unveiling notions of social aspiration and stagnation.

For the onlooker from the towpath, TUG is a journey of curious spectacles, a carnival full of rich contradictions. Following an online guide and sound-score*, you can encounter the passing showboat, discover incidental performance treasures on the towpath, and experience a choreography of shifting perspectives.

Brighton-based, Scottish artist Billy Cowie presents an intriguing 3D experience with two film installations. Jenseits is an 11-minute dance film choreographed by Cowie and performed by Oxana Panchenko from Michael Clark Company. The special filming technique used allows viewers the uncanny experience of sharing the space with a ‘real dancer’.

Filmed in 3D in Japan and the UK, Art of Movement is a series of short dances exploring different choreographic techniques. Each piece is beautifully embedded in a series of projected artworks by artist Silke Mansholt.

sweat baby sweat is a duet about all-consuming love, in which the two performers can’t – and won’t – let go of one another. The physically and mentally entwined couple move together, skin to skin, in a sublime choreography of extremely slow and highly controlled sequences. This is a searing, minimal production in which images, text, movement and music complement one another perfectly.

Flemish choreographer, Jan Martens is part of a new generation of younger artists making a mark on the European scene.

B PROJECT DURATIONAL DANCES: INSPIRED BY BOSCH

This is a rare opportunity to see live performance alongside paintings by Bosch and his contemporaries, offering a new and enriched perspective on well-known works. Five choreographers will create movement responses to the paintings over a 90 minute period - feel free to come and go as you like. Durational Dances is part of B Project, an artist-development initiative which invites European choreographers to research and create new dances inspired by Bosch. B Project is one component of the Bosch 500 Foundation’s major celebration of the visionary painter and his work.

Presented by Dance Umbrella in partnership with the National Gallery.

In this outrageously provocative and entertaining solo, Bulgarian choreographer and performer, Ivo Dimchev, explores the human body as a subject of physical and aesthetic consumption. Through the persona of the outrageous character Lili Handel, Dimchev bring us an extreme, colourful and heady mix of performance art, ‘blood, poetry and music from the white whore’s boudoir’.

The 2013 festival gives UK audiences a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the works of the legendary Trisha Brown up-close in an intimate setting.

As part of a three-year international tour, Trisha Brown Dance Company will perform Brown’s major stage works in the UK for one last time before the Company radically changes shape. This programme features Brown’s final work for eight dancers, I’m going to toss my arms – if you catch them they’re yours (2011), as well as timeless favourites Astral Convertible (1989) and the short but exquisite solo, Watermotor (1978).

Shobana Jeyasingh Dance returns to celebrate its 25th anniversary with this beautiful, mesmeric work, strikingly set within the historic church of St Pancras. Dancing within the pews, six women dressed in flame red weave a story that moves between power and quiet reflection. Are they charting a journey from cradle to grave? Or cast adrift on a wooden sea?

The soundtrack by sound artist Cassiel remixes Tenebrae Responsories by James MacMillan, creating an atmosphere of calm solemnity infused with tense, sometimes ominous, flavours.

In his UK debut, Brazilian choreographer Marcelo Evelin presents a brave and powerful work which radically redefines the relationship between performer and spectator. Bathed in light, the writhing sinewy bodies of the five performers – both alien and strangely familiar – move through the space as an unpredictable but rhythmic, heaving mass.

This promenade performance has surprised and challenged audiences worldwide and is unlike anything else you’ve experienced before.

SPRINGBOARD: THE PLACE STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS

We present a selection of pieces from Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, a recent cross-disciplinary project created by third-year London Contemporary Dance School students. If we accept Glass’s idea, is the collaborative process a way to transcend your own voice as an artist? Join a panel of high profile artists to discuss the pros and cons of artistic collaboration. Is artistic collaboration a compromise and constraint or is it an essential catalyst for new discoveries?

Panellists include choreographers Akram Khan and Siobhan Davies, theatre director Simon McBurney, and filmmaker Sally Potter. The discussion will be chaired by Sir John Tusa.

Join East London Dance for Mixed Movement, an ‘open mic’ event where dancers freestyle to live improvised music. This time it is inspired by the theme of ‘beauty’, which is explored in Robyn Orlin’s piece on the same night. This intimate, spontaneous dance experience invites anyone to join in, or sit back and watch the breathtaking creativity of improvised dance from soloists and double acts.

Featuring live musicians, a DJ and an MC, the event turns into club night, with an open jam that’ll have everyone up and dancing.

Dance Umbrella’s Springboard series is an opportunity for emerging talent to showcase their work in an informal setting.

Mixed Movement is a successful concept, which originated in New York, by Dawn Crandell and Baba Israel.
