Dance (from French danser, ) is an art form that generally refers to movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music, used as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting. Dance is also used to describe methods of non verbal communication (such as body language) between humans or animals ( bee dance, patterns of behavior such as a mating dance).

Israel after deliverance

Ex 15:20-21 Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took the timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances. 21 And Miriam answered them:"Sing to the LORD, For He has triumphed gloriously! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!"

This was first done to celebrate God’s glorious deliverance

God had set bounds at Sinai

Ex 19:23-25 But Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai; for You warned us, saying,'Set bounds around the mountain and consecrate it.'" 24 Then the LORD said to him, "Away! Get down and then come up, you and Aaron with you. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to the LORD, lest He break out against them." 25 So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.

The people were afraid Ex 20:18-21 Now all the people

witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. 19 Then they said to Moses,"You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die." 20 And Moses said to the people,"Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin." 21 So the people stood afar off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was.

They wanted a “golden calf”

Impatient because Moses had not returned

Ex 32:1 Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him,"Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him."

They rose up to play

Ex 32:5 Then they rose early on the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

God told Moses “Go, get down”!

Ex 32:7-10 And the LORD said to Moses,"Go, get down! For your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves. 8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said,'This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!'" 9 And the LORD said to Moses,"I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people! 10 Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation."

He saw the calf and the dancing

Ex 32:17-19 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, "There is a noise of war in the camp." 18 But he said:"It is not the noise of the shout of victory, Nor the noise of the cry of defeat, But the sound of singing I hear." 19 So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing.

The people were unrestrained

Ex 32:25-28 Now when Moses saw that the people were unrestrained (for Aaron had not restrained them, to their shame among their enemies), 26 then Moses stood in the entrance of the camp, and said, "Whoever is on the LORD's side — come to me!" And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him. 27 And he said to them, "Thus says the LORD God of Israel: 'Let every man put his sword on his side, and go in and out from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and let every man kill his brother, every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.'" 28 So the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And about three thousand men of the people fell that day.

Does God have a problem with “Dancing”

Most of the world would say, NO

Does the Bible teach on this subject

Yes and we will examine what it says in detail

Maybe we can find out if it is dangerous or not

In the New Testament we find

LASCIVIOUSNESS The Greek word is aselgia, defined by

Thayer as "unbridled lust...wanton acts or manners (including) filthy words, indecent bodily movements, unchaste handling of males and females"

The English word lascivious is defined "exciting sexual desires; salacious"

We must take careful steps to remain pure

Anything which excites the lust of the flesh (words, bodily movements, unchaste handling) is therefore considered sinful a. Of course, this applies to the stirring up of sexual desires and sensual pleasures outside the bond of marriage

The excitement of lust The excitement of lust between those not

married is sinful, condemned by Jesus in Mt 5:28. 1) It is wrong to lust for another person 2) It must therefore be wrong to arouse lust in another person

Matt 5:28-29 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell

Common sense tells us it is wrong

What would be your reaction if you saw an entire dance floor with people of the same sex dancing together? a. If dancing was morally neutral, having no sexual overtones, there would be no reaction at all! b. But most would be shocked, suspecting they had stumbled into a "gay" bar. 2. Listen to what is simply common sense: a. If we would expect such a dance to be an expression of "gay" sensuality... b. ...how can we deny that people of opposite sex dancing together is an expression of heterosexual sensuality?

What is sex outside of marriage

Heb 13:4 Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

Rom 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

What about the dance of Herodias daughter Salome ?

It caused Herod to do something he was sorry for and it cost John the Baptist his life, being beheaded for telling Herod the truth about

his life!

People scoff at God’s Word

Gal 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Abstain from the very Appearance of Evil !
