Definition of Large Dams for inclusion under NRLD
• A large dam - Maximum height of more than 15 meters from its deepest foundation to the crest
A dam between 10 m and 15 meters in height from deepest foundation is also classified as Large Dam if it satisfies with any one of the following conditions:
a) Length of crest of the dam not less than 500 meters or
b) capacity of the reservoir not less than one MCM or
c) Max. discharge of the dam not less than 2000 cubic metre or
d) Dam specially with difficult foundation problems or
e) Dam of unusual design.

Monsoon reports for all the dams are being
prepared every year after inspecting the dams by the
concerned inspecting officers at various levels as
detailed below:

Periodical monsoon inspections of Dams are carried out yearly four times by the field officers as per the target given below.
Health Status Report
Annual Consolidation Report (ACR) is prepared everyyear by consolidating Health Status Report for all theDams based on Pre Monsoon and Post Monsoon inspectionreports and submitted to CWC for review. 10
Pre and Post Monsoon Reports are reviewed by DamSafety Directorate and the Health status of the Dam isassessed.

PHASE II INSPECTION A Dam Safety Expert Committee (National
Expert Team) for carrying out phase – II safetyinspection of dams is constituted by Govt.
Members of Phase II committee are1. Dr. B.K.Mittal, Former Chairman, CWC2. Shri K.V.Subba Rao, Former CE, Hyderabad3. Shri O.D. Mande, New Delhi
Phase II inspection should be conducted whenthe findings of the phase I inspection indicatesthe need for additional analysis andinvestigation to any Dam.

Rehabilitation works in Dams under DRIP:
Strengthening of Earthen bund
Repairs to Revetment/ rip -rap in u/s face , Chutes, Parapet walls/kerb walls, Toe drain, Rock Toe, Road on top of dam, d/s rubble apron, Energy dissipation arrangement, Filter Arrangements etc.
Reaming the Vertical Drainage Shaft
Grouting if necessary
Providing additional Surplus Weir / Fuse plug Arrangements if required
Repairs/ replacement of shutters
Repairs or providing Instrumentation
Improving Basic facilities – Electrification, Communication Facilities, Lightning Conductors
Automatic weather stations, Digital water level indicators, Flood warning System (Siren) are proposed to be installed.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION
A. TECHNICAL COMMITTEE (TC) MEETING FOR DRIP
Technical Committee for DRIP was constituted:
To provide technical input to the National
Level Steering Committee for DRIP.
To finalize technical details of the project.
To co-ordinate with the implementing
committees of respective State Governments.
To review the progress of the projects and
To report to the National Level Steering
Committee.
Once in three months to review the progress.
So far 10 TC meetings have been conducted.

B. REVIEW BY WORLD BANK MISSION
Review twice in a year.
If required Mid term review will be conducted to
discuss the bottle necks.
So far 4 WB meetings have been conducted.
3rd World Bank Review Mission Meeting was
organised by TNSPMU @ Kodaikanal on 28.10.13.
WB Mid-term review Mission meeting was
organised by TNSPMU @ Ooty on 14.10.14.

CONCLUSION
The expected out come of the project are:
• The dam and its appurtenances are standardized
to its original design strength.
• Existing deficiencies are rectified and safety is
improved.
• Life of the dam is extended.
• Operational performance is increased and serve
to the state by bringing maximum benefits.
