The design initiative for this project was to create a building that decontaminates the water, while at the same time, educates the community. The literal engagement with the Fox River gives the building symbolism, provides easy boat access, and allows views to and from the site. The dividing up the multi-use functions in floors not only succeeds programmatically, but helps involve the community with its purpose. The outdoor space gives the historic museum it’s own presence and creates a safe public space for the locals.

10 WORLD VISION DISASTER SHELTER
How can a shelter be made in America, then shipped to Indonesia for less than $1500 each?
How can a shelter be designed so that it may be set up in less than an hour so immediate care may be provided?
How can the structure and membrane be designed to withstand heavy winds and rains for over a year?
How can a temporary home not only provide shelter, but encourage regular living and community for a people?
Basic structure and connectability

Fabric sheathing with reed coverings for windows gives vernacular
aesthetics to the shelter and provides the users with a sense of the
traditional dwellings that they are accustomed to. Reed coverings, which
can be rolled up and down, control sunlight and ventilation. They allow
moderate amount of light and air in to the interior. The light, neutral color
of the fabric is a good reflector of sunlight in tropical Indonesian weather
and also gives the shelter a pleasing aesthetic. A hole at the center of the
roof alternatively serves the purposes of either rain collection or ventilation.

What is architecture?
Architecture is man’s literal interpretation of how he understands the world. It is a manifestation of his concept of truth. Fundamentally, we must understand that you can’t cheat the literal. We are bound by the laws of nature; no matter how strongly we may wish otherwise, nature and it’s laws are finite. How we respond to those laws, in keeping with man-made laws, defines who we are.
Architecture may be best comprehended as a body, and we its tissue. Psychologists agree that our first layer of understanding comes by how relate the world around us to the human body. This innate cognitive action helps us comprehend the literal world posthaste. How we relate to a building, from the form to the detail, is vital to how we design. A building’s communication with nature affects our communication with nature.
I believe that through the innate servanthood of the designer, positive community and prosperity may be achieved for mankind. This is my goal in architecture.
