1 April 2019 Message from the President Didnt I promise you some exciting times ahead? I just didnt know it was going to be so quickly. I am writing this to you, having just came out from our TAHU Annual Membership Meeting, and you thought by-law changes were boring! If you were not present, you missed some strong feelings, some legal maneuvering that would make a politician proud! But in the end, the votes were overwhelming and the amendment to our by-laws passed to allow Chapter President to appoint a person to stand in to vote, in case he/she were not able to attend the meeting in person. Of course that was not the only reason to attend, there were some incredible speakers, great vendors, and great fun for all. As well as your chapter was able to come home with the honor of the #1 Large Chapter for Increase in Membership! Even though I accepted the trophy, it belongs to all of you and the great leadership and effort from our Membership Chairman, Donna McCright and Suzanne Crim. Of course, the big surprise of the evening our very own, much beloved Canadian born, Reid Rasmussen taking down the big trophy, the Hollis Roberson Award! I think it has been the only time I saw Reid speechless. And then Reids Father and many other family members, some as far away as British Columbia walked in and it was truly an incredible time for Reid and all of us you know him. So lots of drama, much more to come, along with a great line-up for our monthly meetings. So be sure to get scheduled to attend on May 15 th , when our very own Andra Grava will be enlightening us in the disability world. For most of us, we just leave those commission dollars on the table because we fail to ask, but think how much worse it would be than just losing a few commission dollars if your client be- came totally disabled and he/she asks you why you didnt mention disability insur- ance. Message from the President

Didn’t I promise you some exciting times ahead? I just didn’t know it was going to

be so quickly. I am writing this to you, having just came out from our TAHU Annual

Membership Meeting, and you thought by-law changes were boring! If you were

not present, you missed some strong feelings, some legal maneuvering that would

make a politician proud! But in the end, the votes were overwhelming and the

amendment to our by-laws passed to allow Chapter President to appoint a person

to stand in to vote, in case he/she were not able to attend the meeting in person.

Of course that was not the only reason to attend, there were some incredible

speakers, great vendors, and great fun for all. As well as your chapter was able to

come home with the honor of the #1 Large Chapter for Increase in Membership!

Even though I accepted the trophy, it belongs to all of you and the great leadership

and effort from our Membership Chairman, Donna McCright and Suzanne Crim.

Of course, the big surprise of the evening our very own, much beloved Canadian

born, Reid Rasmussen taking down the big trophy, the Hollis Roberson Award! I

think it has been the only time I saw Reid speechless. And then Reid’s Father and

many other family members, some as far away as British Columbia walked in and it

was truly an incredible time for Reid and all of us you know him.

So lots of drama, much more to come, along with a great line-up for our monthly

meetings. So be sure to get scheduled to attend on May 15th, when our very own

Andra Grava will be enlightening us in the disability world. For most of us, we just

leave those commission dollars on the table because we fail to ask, but think how

much worse it would be than just losing a few commission dollars if your client be-

came totally disabled and he/she asks you why you didn’t mention disability insur-

ance.

Wishing you the best in every way! And may you be blessed with Divine Wisdom!

The undertones of fear for today's broker

Bret Brummitt

Sometimes you hear a phrase and it won't let you go. That combination of words burrows deep down in your brain some-

where between the logical and emotional strands of your conscious being, buried for the moment, but just waiting to explode

and take hold of your thoughts and not let go in some kind of existential mind-loop.

For me, I had that experience in late 2018, and it hasn't let go. At least not yet......

"the price of relevance is fluency"

Yep. It's yours now too. Those words for Anil Dash are both yours and mine to deal with now.

"the price of relevance is fluency"

Anil was writing about culture, power, public platforms, speech, language, criticism, and the age-old phenomenon of change

that has been accelerated due to the speed of change we experience today as the results of our technologically connected

society.

And, there is the same thing happening in our microcosm society that I commonly refer to as 'broker world".

I'm privy to many conversations and many perspectives thanks to the different networks and cohorts of brokers, thought

leaders and cherished peers that I'm lucky enough to participate and enjoy community amongst. And there is a very common

theme that arises over and over and over and over again. "How will I survive this next big change?".

The context of tackling this uncertainty has been voiced in various aspects that range from technology to talent acquisition to

knowledge, and even just basic fears of the personal capacity to adapt.

And wherever lies the fear, the answer to overcoming the fear is the same.

"the price of relevance is fluency"

To stay relevant, or in other words, to provide value to your clients, immersion in the culture, language, and society at large

is not optional.

April 2019

There was once a time when technology was a layer we used as a tool to perform a task, now technology is a layer upon we

live, and it goes deeper than any task or any specific software. Technology has become part of the fabric of nature, rivaled

only by relationships, air, water, and food.

There was once a time when geographical differences and nuances were understood as easily as gender and religious

backgrounds, but that time has passed us by quickly to the point that attentive listening and clarifying conversations are nec-

essary to understand our clients. Today we must shed the baggage of our assumptions from the past that now fail us and

keep us from becoming the advisors that our neighbors and community deserves.

"the price of relevance is fluency"

..... and those are just the inner-operational fears

"Broker World" also faces a cultural attitude and general societal undertone that we as the American People feel hopeless

and powerless in the fight for our earnings and extremely uncared for in an impersonal healthcare system.

To be completely dismissive of the Medicare for All movement is a blind spot that many of us will falter upon. And if we don't

engage on the problems that drive the huge dissatisfaction with today's healthcare system, “broker world" will lose complete

relevance.

"the price of relevance is fluency"

This is a huge task and one that honestly will take a lifetime to achieve.

Fortunately, when you look in the eyes of those whom we serve, a lifetime of improvement is just the minimum efforts they

deserve.

We can do better, our clients deserve better.

Our clients deserve relevant advice, and the price is fluency with today's and tomorrow's culture.

"Everything You Want to Know About DI... But Didn't Know to Ask" (CE #108340)

Andra Grava, CLU, RHU Founder & Chief Innovation Officer, The DI Center

May is Disability Insurance Awareness Month (DIAM) and while DI is known by most of our industry as a key piece of any financial plan, many consumers have common questions that their agent or broker can’t answer.

How often do disabilities actually occur and what causes them? Aren’t most individuals already covered by their employer? Can premiums be deducted by small business owners and self-employed professionals?

All of this and more will be answered in a Q&A presentation.

The DI Center traces its roots back to 1996 when Andra became one of the country’s first individual DI focused General Agents. Since then, the BGA's growth from Making DI EasierSM for producers nation-wide has allowed it to expand its expertise to life insurance, annuities, retirement planning, and even group benefits.

Andra is an active member of several industry associations, including FPA, GAMA, IDIS, NAHU, NAIFA, and SFSP. He does more than just pay his dues though as a Past President of DAHU and NAIFA-Dallas. Active in political advocacy for our industry, he is also a PAC Contribu-tor to HUPAC and IFAPAC.
