THE

ISSUEANDROGYNY

“Androgyny” is a bit of a dirty word these days. People seem to confuse the term with the likes of transvestites and drag queens rather than blurring the lines be-tween the sexes of male and female. This issue, we are interested in all things sex, (yes, sex as in the physical act as well as gender). On the runways this season, there was outcrys of lust seen from Louis Vuitton as models strutted down the catwalk in PVC and handcuffs, to Tom Ford’s ever-current sex appeal in both his clothing and his perfumes, as well as the man himself. We at Wonderland felt it would be a shame not to honour these ideas in our September edition. So here it is: the Androgyny issue. Its not about dressing like an actual hooker, nor about being the ultimate ‘Man Repeller’. Its about celebrating a new look in the fash-ion industry, an industry where the lines of gender have been blurred without discrimination. For example, take runway model Andreg Pejic, the Australian male model who’s walked for female catwalk shows Jean-Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs. Then theres our cover-star Joelle Carter who’s swapped her usual stun-ning glamour for a different kind of look in our editiorial ‘Gender Unknown’, exclusively for Wonderland. First up, we have a piece on the brightest new tal-ent in the blogosphere, Leandra Medine otherwise known as The Man Repeller. We’ve taken a look at musicians, such as the iconic Lady Gaga, who have man-aged to make their mark on culture and inspired people of both genders. And for the rest? Expect clothing to make you go week at the knee’s, discussions, ideas, interviews and the best of this seasons mens and womenswear and accessories. Dont you just love us?

THEMAN

REPELLER

Recognised for her air-dry hair, bow ties, countless accesso-ries, layers, oversized watches, unforgettable shoes and even more layers Leandra Medine is award-winning blogger, The

Man Repeller.Words Daniel Jacobs Photographer Naomi Shon

In a world of overly-attractive and cult-label styled bloggers, Leandra Medine provides a breath of fresh air with her frizzy hair and self-entitled ‘Man Repelling’ styling. Pioneering such trends at bow-ties and velvet slip-pers, this New York dwelling female is paving the way for the new fashion generation. The Man Repellers - a bunch of women dressing for each other, rather than to attract the male gaze. Made ‘fashion famous’ by her blog The Man Repeller, Medine is now moving on to bigger and better things, col-laborating with designers and writing pieces for other fashion publications and websites. It seems this Journalism graduate is making her way up in the world, and influencing and inspiring women along the way.

Not wanting to be “just another personal style blogger” Leandra Medi-ne set up her blog ‘The Man Repeller’ in April 2010 after inspiration struck during a shopping trip with friend Rachel Strugatz in Topshop where they were laughing about how repelling various items of clothing were to the opposite sex. She then began publishing photographs of herself wearing said items accompanied by her witty and humorous writing.Medine’s quick rise to fame came on December 15th 2010 when she was profiled in the New York Times as a fashion triumph. Now, with over 22,000 followers on her blog along with 43,791 followers on Twitter (@ManRepeller) she has become one of the most influential fashion bloggers of our time, winning the 2011 BlogLovin’ award for Most Original Blog earlier this year.

Ms. Medine currently lives with her parents on the Upper East Side (ironic considering the name of her blog?) where she dedicates three to five hours a day to blogging and social media. It is also where she captures the majority of the photographs which appear on her blog, wearing a mixture of designer attire and her mother’s vintage pieces. Styling herself in such ways that differ from the regular blogger, she has found a niche in the blog-

ging industry, creating looks and outfits that appeal to fashion fans, yet at the same time confuse and repel the male species. Such items including turbans, harem pants, clogs and formal sweatpants all of which she wears so well. As a blogger, Leandra has been sponsible for some of the key trends seen on many followers of fashion. From other bloggers, to people walking around London I have spotted many a velvet slipper or harem pant. Even the odd few ‘birth control glasses’ as donned by The Man Repeller herself. It seems bloggers are the new ‘celebrity’ when it comes to style icons, with many women copying her signature layering style in both clothing and ac-cessories.

Despite only starting her blog in April of 2010 Medine has already achieved so much, from a profile in the New York Times to writing her own piece in Harper’s Bazaar entitled ‘Can you be in fashion and still get a man?’ she’s immersed in the fashion and media industry’s from both per-spectives. Leandra regards social networking websites such as Twitter as inspirational to her blog due to fans ‘tweeting’ musings and photographs of their own ‘man repelling’ outfits at her, which she then posts on her blog in her ‘Twitter Round-Up’ posts. She also posts her own thoughts via humor-ous tweets, gaining her nearly 50,000 followers.

“COMBINE THREE OF YOUR FAVOURITE PIECES, SEE HOW IT WORKS, GO FROM THERE”

The Man Repeller has influenced fans in both vocabulary and style, with many women using the blog title as a verb, regarding catwalk looks and clothing pieces as ‘man-repelling’ or an ‘alternative to conventional con-traceptives’. Her witty and unique writing style is one of the factors why her blog has become so popular; she is clever in her humour and stylish in her photographs, attracting fans from across the globe. She tells me she believes the key to her success is her writing rather than styling, but her rule of thumb would have to be “combine three of your favourite pieces, see how it works, go from there”. This seems to be working well for the twenty two year old, accumulating 1.5 million page views per month on her blog and thousands of followers. Her personal style is undoubtedly unique yet fashionable, mixing a range of designer, high-street and vintage pieces to create looks to inspire her audience. She regards Givenchy, rag + bone and The Kooples as her favourite designers and likes to shop at Topshop, Bar-neys, Kirna Zabete, Mikkat Market in New York.

As well as ‘man repelling’, Medine also created the catch phrase ‘arm party’ regularly used on both her blog and Twitter to describe the stacks of bracelets and watches that adorn her skinny arms. A trend that seemed to be present on many arms at Fashion Week in both London and New York.As well as writing for her own blog along with other major publications, Medine who studied Journalism at The New School has recently collabo-rated with designers on a number of different projects. Sitting on the design panel of Dannijo, she created Mr Dannijo (a clever combination of her initials and the theme of the collaboration) a menswear inspired jewel-lery range. The collection features collars, rings and cuffs all named after prominent males. She also features in the advertising campaign alongside her good friends and Dannijo designers Danielle and Jodie Snyder. Alexa Chung, one of Leandra’s admitted style crush (she describes her style as an “An Alexa Chung-Hamish Bowles hybrid”), was spotted wearing the ‘Sinatra’ jewelled collar by Mr Dannijo.

She aligns herself with brands that fit her image, for example Grython – a chic line of trench coats designed by ex-US Vogue writer, Aimee Cho, whom she collaborated with to produce a navy trench coat sold exclusively to Shopbop.com and then styled in five unique ways to promote the collab-oration. Leandra also features in a series of humorous promotional videos for designer, Rachel Roy. Of which she is seen styling young women “turn-ing the everyday girl into a full-blown Fashion Propeller” otherwise known as ‘Man Repellers’. The collaboration came about after Roy read Leandra’s blog and felt her styling mirrored that of which she was trying to achieve for Rachel by Rachel Roy.

Although many see blogging as a hobby, it has now become a main stay of income for many young women, just look to youtube.com channels or the ever growing ‘blogosphere’ to see how successful some of them have be-come. Leandra admits that she can indeed ‘live’ off her blog, earning money from “ads, affiliates, consulting, styling, writing and designing” as well as being sent the majority of clothing she features on her blog from designers. When asked what she would be doing if she wasn’t blogging, Ms. Medine replied “Probably working at one of the places I’ve interned. Maybe fetch-ing coffee at Valentino? Maybe Phillip Lim...oh wait, they fired me”. Blog-gers are becoming celebrities in their own right, getting front row seats at major fashion shows and appearingin a variety of fashion publications, their opinions and ideas are respected by followers of fashion and Leandra is not the only blogger who has made a name for herself outside of the on-line world. However, it seems Leandra has adapted to her new found fame as she tells me “when I’m in Soho on a Sunday I get stopped a lot, it’s really fun and I really like it” with genuine enthusiasm.

Although she can’t tell me where she sees herself in ten years’ time, she expresses that she is still very much interested in keeping up with her blog and continuing to teach women how to dress for themselves and main-tain the mentality that you don’t need to dress for a man. She also has no intention of moving out of the family home any time soon - due to the treasures existing in her mother’s wardrobe I’d say this is a wise choice. Medine tells Wonderland her ultimate short-term ambition is to sit front row at Chanel, with all that she has achieved in such a short space of time, this goal doesn’t seem to us too farfetched.Check out themanrepeller.com for more from Leandra Medine
