The Indian Diary Association (South zone) and the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) will jointly organise a three-day Dairy Industry conference from February 17 at NIMHANS convention centre in the city. Giving details of the conference on Tuesday, Satish Kulkarni, Head of National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), told presspersons the conference would focus on “Indian Dairying — Productivity and Food Safety”. To be inaugurated by Amritha Patel, Chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), the conference will provide a common platform for dairy professionals, farmers, equipment manufacturers, development agents and students to interact. It also aims at facilitating discussions and chalking out policy proposals while drawing the attention of policy makers, Dr. Kulkarni said. “Although India has emerged as the world’s largest milk producing country and milk production stands at 104 million tonnes — 14 per cent of the world’s production — the productivity of our milch animals is abysmally low. The yield of a majority of our milch is less than a litre a day, which makes rearing uneconomical,” he said. These issues, along with those related to the shortage of feed and fodder and environmental challenges, will be discussed at the conference, he said. Managing Director KMF M.N. Venkatram said the conference was of great importance as it would address issues of low productivity and food safety aspects. Apart from the presentation of scientific papers, the conference will include an interactive farmers’ session and an exhibition. A souvenir will also be released to mark the occasion, he said. Nearly 1,100 delegates and delegates from 140 dairy industries will participate in the conference, he said.TRANSCRIPT
