CSE Diary for 31.12.2012
The market was on a positive sentiment today as it ended in the green
for the 6th consecutive reaching the highest point since 19th Oct 2012.
The dividend play counters Ceylon Tobacco and Nestle led the upward
push of the index while the illiquid counters Carsons Cumberbatch and
Sri Lanka Telecom played a supportive role. The benchmark index had
an early rush before some selling pressure pushing the index back.
However, strong buying interest returned to the market during the last
90 minutes of play as the index surged about 20 points during thatperiod before finally closing at 5,643 with a gain of 36 points. The dividend play counters has been in the forefront as the index
jumped over 200 points during the month of December. Despite lower
turnover with the lack of local investor participation foreign interest has
stood steady and strong during the period justifying the attractiveness of
the Colombo Bourse. In addition to the dividend play counters large
cap counters led by Commercial Bank and John Keells Holdings led the
buying interest of the foreigners. This is clear sign of confidence of the
growth in Sri Lankas economy as well.Nestle was the limelight of the day with the only crossing for the day
consisting of 40k shares dealt at LKR1575.0. The counter which has
attracted considerable interest during the month of December 2012
reached a new 52-week high as onboard trades saw the counterrecording a peak price of 1,700.0. The counter closed the day with a
gain of 6.2% to reach 1,593.5. Another dividend play counter Ceylon
Tobacco also managed to touch a 52-week high price of LKR830.0 with
only 5.7k shares trading during the day while the counter closed at
LKR830 (+1.3%).Banking sector counterSampath Bank supported by an onboard deal
of 200k shares at LKR201.0 registered the 2nd highest turnover for the
counter day. Despite its attractive valuations the counter ended the
day with a dip of 0.3% to close at LKR200.5. Investor interest continued
in Commercial Bank, the largest listed bank and the large
conglomerates John Keells Holdings and Aitken Spence. Most European Stocks Fall as U.S Budget Talks Stall: Most Europeanstocks fell amid concern U.S. lawmakers wont reach a budget deal in
time to prevent automatic tax increases and spending cuts from
coming into effect tomorrow. U.S. index futures signaled a lower
opening for equities and Asian shares were little changed. The StoxxEurope 600 Index (SXXP) declined less than 0.1% to 278.71 at 9:23 a.m. in
London.Oil Heads for Annual Loss as U.S. Budget Talks Near Deadline: Oil
fluctuated in New York, heading for its first annual loss since 2008, as U.S.
lawmakers tried to bridge disagreements over how to avert tax
increases and spending cuts that threaten the worlds largest economy.Crude for February delivery was at USD90.91 a barrel, up 11 cent, in
electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange at 4 p.m. in
Singapore.

Sri Lanka sees surge of visitors from China: Chinese visitors to Sri Lanka has surged 164% to 3,353 inNovember 2012 with total visitors in the first 12 months up 46% to 22,176 data from the tourist
promotion office shows. It is not clear how many are tourists per se, no breakdown available for
business visitors at this stage. Many workers from China are in Chinese funded state projects in the
country. Earlier this month police arrested more than a 100 Chinese in a single sweep, who were
apparently engaged in an organized internet based scam targeting victims in their home country. Sri
Lanka's tourist promotion agency has been pushing for Chinese visitors with growing affluence in the
country following nearly five years of steady currency appreciation. In neighboring Maldives, Chinese
arrivals have been a lifeline to the tourism industry which has been hit by declining arrivals from Europe.
Chinese visitors to the Maldives rose 14.9% to 213,868 in the 11 months to November 2012 from a yearearlier. Chinese arrivals made up 24.8% of the 866,000 visitors to Maldives in the 11 months to
November 2012, compared to just 2.5% of Sri Lanka's total of 883,000. China is the top source of visitors
for many fast growing East Asian countries. In Vietnam 1.2 mn out of 6.0 mn visitors up to November
2012 were Chineses.

of imports. The Central Bank said worker remittances (exports of labour) rose 17.1% to USD5.4 bn,
foreign direct investments were USD614 mn, portfolio investments were USD280 mn (exports of

USD5.52 bn. Sri Lanka floated the currency in February 2012 ending contradictory monetary and
exchange rate policies leading to the rupee falling from around 110 to 118 to the US dollar. Sri Lanka

defending a currency peg with dollar sales and printing money to prevent a slowdown in credit and a rise

newspaper quoted Worldlink director Gerard Amerasinghe as saying. After a 30-year war ended in 2009,
Sri Lanka has seen a revival in tourism. The hotel named 'The Amaara Sky' has 12 rooms with a
penthouse, a suite, four deluxe rooms, two superior and two standard rooms. Then newspaper quoted
managing director Ahintha Amerasinghe as saying that rooms have a clear view of Kandy city as if from
the sky. The word 'Amaara' has the meaning of means 'eternal beauty' and it also has a likeness to the
family name of the owners with an extra letter 'a, the report said. The Amaara Sky also be a "virtual art
gallery" with over 80 paintings of various artists displayed on its walls. The Worldlink Travel group hasbeen supporting local artists by acquiring paintings over several years and how has a collection of over
200 which are displayed in their travel offices, the report said.

to fund local governments, a person familiar with the matter said. The central government deficit is
budgeted at 850 bn yuan, according to the person, who asked not to be identified as the deliberations
are not public. The nations leaders target about 8% trade growth, down from this years 10% goal, the
person said. A bigger fiscal deficit may give Chinas new leadership under X i Jinping more room for tax
cuts and measures to boost urbanization and consumer demand. The 1.2 trillion-yuan total compares
with an 800 bn-yuan target this year, which included a 550 bn-yuan central government deficit and 250
bn yuan in local government bond sales. The year 2013 is the first year for the new Chinese leadership, and urbanization will receive a big push, said Zhang Zhiwei, chief China economist at Nomura Holdings
Inc. in Hong Kong. Financial support, including an expanded fiscal deficit in the budget, is needed for
that.

Labor Market, Housing in US Strengthen Into 2013: Economy: Singapores economic expansion eased in2012 amid weak growth in advanced nations and as companies faced hiring constraints, Prime Minister
Lee Hsien Loong said. Gross domestic product rose 1.2% in 2012, Lee said in his New Year message
released in Singapore today. The growth rate Lee estimates implies a fourth-quarter GDP contraction
that pushed Singapore into a technical recession, said Michael Wan, an economist at Credit Suisse Group
AG. Its a disappointing number, Wan said. Weve seen huge weakness in the manufacturing sectorfor two keys reasons. One is the high exchange rate, partly because of our policy to use the exchange
rate to curb inflation, and the second reason is our domestic policies when it comes to foreign workers.

BRIC Dominance Fades as State Meddling Curbs Equity Returns: Stocks in the biggest developingmarkets are lagging behind global equities for a record third year as faster economic growth proves no
lure for investors amid concerns over government interference in markets. The MSCI BRIC Index
(MXBRIC) of shares in Brazil, Russia, India and China rose 11 percent this year through Dec. 28, trailing
the MSCI All-Country World Index by 1.6% points. The trend will probably persist in 2013, according to
John-Paul Smith, a Deutsche Bank AG strategist. Mutual funds that invest in BRIC nations have postedUSD1.65bn of outflows as Brazilian politicians intervened to cut utility rates, China maintained control of
its biggest companies and Russian businesses spent shareholder money on projects favored by the
government. This whole revolution of going from a socialistic mentality to a market economy mentality
is not complete, Mark Mobius, who oversees about USD40bn as the executive chairman of Templeton
Emerging Markets Group and has invested in developing countries for more than 25 years, said in a Dec.
12 phone interview from Nairobi. Were still in the middle of that and have a long way to go.
