Welcome Back everyone!
A special thank you to all of the many parent volunteers who have supported
our community this month with our breakfast program, community
council, Terry Fox Run, driving to field trips, cross country, pancake break-
fast and the BBQ.
During our opening week we began with our theme of Strengthening
Connections by spreading kindness. Throughout the year we will continue to
strengthen connections. We are very interested in your feedback. To that
end, I have created a brief parent survey (two questions) and have included
the link here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FDBKMB3
Thank you to Ms. J. Smith who is our cross country coach again this year.
We have many enthusiastic runners from Grade 4-7 this year. Congratula-
tions to all participants. A big thank you to the Grade 5-7 students who have
volunteered their time by being a school crossing guard. This leadership
opportunity is very important to our entire school community and is very
much appreciated!
I have noticed that the lost and found cart outside the main office is already
starting to fill up. Please check the cart regularly! Also, this is a friendly
reminder to label all clothing. As the weather turns colder, please remember
to send your children to school with clothes appropriate for being outside in
the rain. Please also remember to send along a change of clothing so that
students can get out of wet clothing when needed.
Please join us for our Orange shirt day Assembly on Wednesday,
Oct 3rd at 9:15 am and our Parent Presentation by Dr. MacNamara on
Oct. 30th at 9:15 am in the Library. Stay tuned for our Coffee and
conversation date in November. Please feel free to drop the office anytime.
Warm regards,

Walk and Wheel to School Week: October 1-5, 2018
We would like to invite you to participate in Walk and Wheel to School this week. Our school will be one of
over 150 schools across the province taking part in this annual event to promote the many benefits of walking
and wheeling to school. With over 60,000 students, parents, teachers, and community leaders expected to par-
ticipate, it is a great way to take steps towards a more walkable world. Celebrate the many benefits of walking or
wheeling to school with us, such as:
Celebrating the many health benefits of walking and encouraging daily physical activity
Enhancing the connection between students, parents, schools, and communities in a fun and
interactive way
Promoting opportunities to practice safe walking and biking skills and identifying safe routes to
school
Reducing school traffic congestion and vehicle emissions through active transportation
During the week we will be on the lookout for students who walk or wheel to school.
Even if you drive to school, you can park a block or so away and walk the rest of the
way to school!
Orange Shirt Day is September 30th this year, and is an annual event that provides
communities with the opportunity to discuss residential schools and to join together in
the spirit of reconciliation.
We will commemorate the day on Wednesday, October 3rd at Stoney Creek.
This day grew out of the experiences of Phyllis Webstad, who full of excitement for her
first day of school at age 6, had her new orange shirt taken from her upon her arrival at
residential school. For more information about Orange Shirt Day and Phyllis’ story,
please visit http://www.orangeshirtday.org/

Student Illnesses
Staying healthy throughout
the school year is not al-
ways easy. To avoid illness,
the Fraser Health Authori-
ty recommends that chil-
dren wash their hands reg-
ularly, use a tissue when
they sneeze, eat healthily,
exercise, and get a good
night’s sleep. If your child
does get sick, please do not
send them to school and
limit their contact with oth-
ers to avoid infecting them.
DRESS FOR THE WEATHER Each day, students are expected to go outside for recess
and lunch. Unless it is a downpour, students will be
outside for recess and lunch and should have proper
attire for inclement weather. Parents may wish to send
a change of clothes and an inside pair of shoes for when
it is wet outside.

FUN REC Thank you to all of the staff at NEBCA’s Fun Rec for providing such a fun and wonderful summer
program! The children had such a wonderful time playing games, swimming, going on out-trips,
and more.
Thank you also to Kim and Josh, the Fun Rec managers, for keeping everything running smoothly.
Did you know that Fun Rec is operated by a volunteer Board of Directors for NEBCA (North East Burnaby Community As-
sociation) from our Stoney neighbourhood? This amazing summer camp would not happen without the tireless hours the
parents and community members put into organizing this camp. NEBCA could always use more help on their Board of Di-
rectors, which meets approximately 3 times a year.
If you value the FUN REC summer camp and would like to help make sure it continues running, please consider volunteering
your time! For more information, contact NEBCA at [email protected] or contact Taryn at the school and we will
connect you!

taught, and in turn, we teach our children. Joyce Brothers

TRAFFIC SAFETY, DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP STUDENTS:
Keeping our students safe before and after school is a priority. Parents are encouraged to walk their children to and from
school to reduce traffic congestion. DURING CONSTRUCTION: For everyone’s safety, when walking around to back of
school, ensure you walk/remind your student(s) to walk behind the orange cones. If you do drive to school, please obey all
signs at the front of the school. Our crosswalk provides a small drop-off area just past the crosswalk for those parents who
need it. Please limit drop-off time to accommodate other cars. In addition, the parking lot is for staff only and is not to
be used for dropping off and picking up students or for turning your car around. Please use the designated parking
spots along Beaverbrook Crescent and avoid the front of the school as it impairs the vision of our crossing guards.
In the mornings, students are not permitted on the second floor until the 8:55 bell rings. There is not adequate supervision
and due to safety concerns, we ask that students stay outside until the bell rings. To avoid congestion and noise in the hallways
at the end of the day, parents are encouraged to meet their children on the main floor or just outside the doors to the school.
WHAT NOT TO BRING TO SCHOOL:
Stoney Creek Community School provides a variety of activities, opportunities, and equipment for students during recess and
lunch. Toys, electronic devices, trading cards or anything of value should be left at home to avoid loss or damage.
Cell phones are not permitted during school hours. Students who have a phone are asked to keep them turned off and
put away during the day. Any bikes or scooters brought to school need to be locked up outside along the fence until
construction is completed this fall.
STUDENT INFORMATION:
In order to ensure student safety please make sure the school has all relevant information up to date. This includes any medi-
cal and safety concerns as well as phone numbers and emergency contact information. A copy of each student’s current infor-
mation will be coming home soon. We ask you to check to make sure everything is current.
PARENT COMMUNICATION:
We send our notices and newsletters home via e-mail in order to reduce paper consumption. We hope to have all families
on our group list, but we still do experience problems sending to hotmail and yahoo email addresses.
If you have provided us with a hotmail or yahoo email address and are not receiving our emails, please consider providing us
with a gmail address instead.
If you have not yet completed the “Consent to send commercial electronic messages” form to receive emails, please complete and
return to the office.
Having an open line of communication between home and school is crucial for student success. Please talk to your child’s
teacher on a regular basis and feel free to contact the school if you have any questions or concerns.
ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES:
Regular attendance and prompt arrival at school is important if your child is to gain full benefit from the school program. If
your child is going to be late or away for any reason, please call the school office before 9:00 a.m. to report his/her absence or
tardiness on our Absentee Line.
Please call 604-296-9031 and choose Option 2 to leave a message with the following information:
1. Child’s name (first and last)
2. Teacher name or Division
3. Dates of absence or, if late, estimated time of arrival
Page 11
Welcome back to Stoney Creek, and welcome to all NEW families who have joined our
wonderful community school! We are confident that you will enjoy your time here.
We often get asked, “What is a Community School?”
In short, we describe a community school as a regular public school which offers:
Extended services IT’S ABOUT
Extended hours MAKING
Extended relationships A DIFFERENCE!
Community schools provide a way for community residents, with or without children, to participate in
the activities of their neighborhood school. The variety of programs and services they offer helps to
meet the specific educational, recreational and social needs of the area they serve.
As you will notice, Stoney Creek Community School is open early in the morning and well into the evening every weekday so
that we can offer a variety of programs to help extend learning and activities into the after school hours. Burnaby’s Commun ity
Schools have a strong partnership with the City of Burnaby and many other community partners to bring in programs for chil-
dren and families. These include (but are not limited to) Creekside Youth Centre, Burnaby Parks and Recreation, Shadbolt
Centre for the Arts, YMCA, Scouts, Guides, Cameray, Burnaby Family Life, Strong Start, and NEBCA (which organizes Fun Rec
and the Community Garden). Furthermore, for many of our community events, you will see that they are made possible
through partnerships with community organizations such as the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Association, Lougheed Mall,
NRBIA (North Road Business Improvement Association), Tzu Chi Foundation, Stoney Creek Environment Committee,
Burnaby Neighbourhood House and more!
Through all this, Stoney Creek becomes more that just a school. Stoney Creek is a neighbourhood hub, a meeting place for
our community, from infants to seniors; a place where we all work together to create and enhance learning opportunities and
make our community stronger. We believe it takes a whole community to raise a healthy child. Healthy children and
healthy families in turn build healthy communities!
If you would like more information about services and programs in our school and/or community, or if you have ideas about
what you would like to see in our community, please feel free to stop by the Community Office inside our school or phone us
at (604) 296-9031 Ext. 651011. We can help connect you with programs and services such as:
OST (out of school time) programs (before and after school, evening and summer)
Family support services (i.e. Christmas Bureau, Food Support, Kidsport, Rec Credit Program)
Youth programs
Early learning programs
Community programs and events
Adult education and more!
COMMUNITY SCHOOLS are the neighbourhood hub where children, youth, families, residents, staff, agencies,
and local businesses work together to build a strong and caring community.
Hope to chat with you soon!
