Dominican Republic Tops Costa Rica

Dominican Republic opened the Visit Omaha NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship with a 25-13, 25-6, 25-20 victory over Costa Rica in a Pool A match Monday afternoon at Ralston Arena.

Dominican Republic was led by Gina Mambru’s 11 points, while Yonkaira Pena totaled nine points. Costa Rica was paced by captain Angela Willis Lindo and Paola Ramirez Vargas with seven points each.

Dominican Republic out-served Costa Rica 8-3 and enjoyed a 7-2 margin in blocks. The victors also benefited by 19 Costa Rica errors while holdings their own mistakes to 12 for the match.

Costa Rica faces Trinidad & Tobago, which is idle Monday in the three-team group, on Tuesday at 4 p.m. CT. Dominican Republic is idle on Tuesday before facing Trinidad & Tobago on Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT.

“We started slow at the beginning, but then we got into a rhythm,” Dominican Republic captain Behania de La Cruz said. “It was a great way to start out the tournament. We have seen Costa Rica plenty of times in different tournaments. But it’s good to see them again and they did put up a fight.”

“I’m happy with the win,” Dominican Republic Head Coach Marcos Kwiek said. “It’s about getting more points. The first set was a little rough. We made a lot of mistakes. We tried to clean things up and just win.”

“Compared to other tournaments that we have had and other games that we have played against the Dominican, I think we did good today,” Costa Rica captain Angela Wilis said. “We were a little better in the defense and the passing. Of course we are very anxious and we want to do more than we can do right now. We need to practice a lot to be at their level.”

Puerto Rico Spikes St. Lucia

Puerto Rico overwhelmed St. Lucia 25-8, 25-15, 25-12 Monday afternoon on the opening day of the Visit Omaha NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship at Ralston Arena.

Karina Ocasio paced Puerto Rico with 10 points, while Lynda Morales matched her total with 10 points. St. Lucia captain Natalie Edward totaled six points in leading her team.

Puerto Rico led every statistical category with a 43-15 margin in kills, 8-0 advantage in aces and 3-0 edge in blocks.

St. Lucia completes Pool C on Tuesday versus Canada, which is idle Monday in the three-team group, on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT. Puerto Rico is off on Tuesday before facing Canada on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT.

“We were excited to play the first game of the tournament,” Puerto Rico captain Yarimar Rosa said. “I think in the second set we lost our focus. I think we underestimated them a little bit so we weren’t playing our best. That’s something that we have to get better at.”

“We had a lot of errors,” Puerto Rico head coach Jose Mieles said. “We have to play hard regardless of who we are playing. We have to play our own level of volleyball.”

“This is like nothing we have ever experienced, playing at this level,” Edward said. “We are just trying to take it all in and play our best.”

“I thought we were a bit nervous,” St. Lucia Head Coach Florian Combie said. “It’s our first journey to this level of tournament. As we gain experience I think our fear will diminish.”

United States Handles Mexico at Home

United States, ranked second in the world, opened the Visit Omaha NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship strong with a 25-9, 25-12, 25-11 victory over Mexico Monday evening in Pool B at Ralston Arena.

Kelly Murphy charted a match-high 14 points to lead the United States. Local favorite Jordan Larson-Burbach tallied 11 points in the victory, while Christa Harmotto scored six blocks as part of 10 total points. Andrea Rangel led a young Mexico roster with six points.

The United States out-blocked Mexico 9-2 and notched a commanding 43-17 margin in kills. The reigning Olympic silver medalists also produced a 6-2 advantage in aces.

Mexico faces Cuba, which is idle Monday in the three-team group, on Tuesday at 8 p.m. CT. United States is idle on Tuesday before facing Cuba on Wednesday at 8 p.m. CT.

“I thought we did a good job,” U.S. captain Kristin Hildebrand said. “We served really well, passed well and ran a fast offense. I thought a lot of people came off the bench and made great contributions.”

“It’s nice to be home,” United States Head Coach Karch Kiraly said. “We’ve barely been home two weeks from World Grand Prix. Tonight, all 12 players we brought here made nice contributions against a feisty and spunky Mexican team. I love how (Mexico) never gave up. They pursued a lot of balls on defense that other teams might not have been able to get over the net.”

“It’s very tough to defend against the U.S. serving,” Mexico Head Coach Claudio Torres said. “We couldn’t get our offense going because of serve receive errors. We have to be better at serve receive.”
