Tiger shows its ugly side TIGER Airways last night wasexposed to the scrutiny of thenation, with a warts-and-allexpose in the first episode of thenew channel 7 show Air Ways. The program was broadcast lastnight at 7.30pm, and despiteassurances by Tiger ceo ShelleyRoberts (TD 03 Jul) that it wouldbe good publicity, the painful firstepisode seemed to be just theopposite. The 30 minute show mainlyfocused on two major incidents -a passenger riot in Melbourne as aresult of a ten hour delay, and acouple forced to pay excessbaggage because their child wastwo years and five days old. A couple had booked a ticketfor their infant, but because thechild was five days older than a24-month limit specified in thecarrier’s terms and conditions, thefare didn’t include carriage of thebaby’s pram. Tiger’s staff enforced thepayment of an excess baggage

fee, much to the very publicannoyance of the child’s mother. In the other incident a flight tothe Gold Coast was cancelled, with a small group of elderlypassengers set to be separatedonto two different flights. TT staff “worked a miracle” bygetting the group onto a singleflight - but during boarding theleaders of the group becameagitated after the ten-hour delay, with Tiger employees calling thepolice and alleging that the paxwere too aggressive to travel. The show may not have shownall sides of the story, but it didseem that this was somewhat ofan overreaction by the Tiger staff, with two members of the elderlygroup eventually denied boarding, and travelling to the Gold Coastthe next day on another carrier. Another element of the programrelated to a passenger who failedto board a flight to Perth and hadhis baggage offloaded. It turned out that he had fallenasleep in the departure loungeafter arriving at the airport at thebreak of dawn and enduring adelay of several hours. Viewers were prompted to askwhether TT staff or other paxcould have tapped him on theshoulder and told him the flightwas boarding?
