DESCRIPTION

The International Institutes main goal is to give Refugees the tools they need to live a happy and selfsuffi cient life here in Providence, but they are yet to put into motion any long term plans for a children’s program. While the I.I., does currently offer a short-term babysitting facility it currently has no budget for a daycare program, and does not have the means to create one. The mission of this Proposal for Change is to create and implement a volunteer strategy that encourages local members of the community to become actively involved with the refugee children. It will be the goal of this program to help the children integrate into their new surroundings in a healthy and productive way.

The International Institute’s main goal is to give Refugees the tools they need to live a happy and self-sufficient life here in providence, but they are yet to put into motion any long term plans for a children's program.

While the I.I., does currently offer a short-term babysitting facility it currently has no budget for a daycare program, and do not have the means to create one.

problem

Page 4: Dabnet

Why is this a problem? As more and more families join the community of refugee families here in providence, more and more children arrive too.

Single mothers receive enough federal funding for2 months of daycare.Married Women receive nothing.

Married mothers are then forced to stay home and take care of their children instead of attending important classes, and single mothers soon join them.

missionTo create and implement a SOCIAL NETWORK BASED ON A VOLUNTEER STRATEGY that encourages local members of the community to become actively involved with the refugee children.

It will be the goal of this program to help the children integrate into their new surroundings in a healthy and productive way THROUGH the abundant EXAMPLES AND EXPERIENCES AVAILABLE AROUND THEM.

Volunteers will work within the direct physical vicinity of the daycare and the children. They will be in charge of completing any daily tasks, as well as documenting the days activities.

Local members of the community will be encouraged to visit the daycare, and read to them. Or they can choose to tell the children what they do for a living and how they became successful.

Members of the community that want to do manual labor are well to come help in the ongoing renovation of the space. The daycare will be considered a living space, and as we learn new things the room will need to adapt.

Field trips create a great opportunity for the children to get to know hands on their environment and learn as much as they can about what is possible here in Providence.

Hosting an event that promotes DAbnet is going to be ongoing process. Local leaders will have the opportunity to use their connections to spread the word about the new members of our community and hopefully receive local press for doing it.

Partnerships with local organizations, while farthest from the physical space, connect a much farther reaching community, and provide the networking channels Dabnet needs to survive. Dabnet will sustain these partnerships through advertisement deals with local publications.

“All human beings are connected like parts of the

body to each other and they are all created of the same

essence. If one part of the body, one limb, is in pain the other

parts will suffer.”

-quote from a anonymous poem read by an employee at the I.I.
