The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers last Friday night registered their first victory on home turf with a 2-1 victory over the Melbourne Heart in front of 8,075 fans.

Coach Tony Popovic was ecstatic about claiming the three points at home and said he was hoping the good run would continue.

“It’s pleasing, we got the three points and we played well,” Popovic said. “After dominating possession early it was good to get the opening goal and we held on well at the end.”

When asked about the amount of feeling in the match, Popovic was quick to praise his troops.

“They play for each other and it’s good to see.”

The early exchanges were full of passion and when German Jerome Polenz was brought down it looked to have been a foul but it was the next challenge from Shinji Ono that caused the most concern for referee Regis Quefflec. After some scuffle in the centre of the

park Ono was shown a yellow card and the Heart received the free kick.

It was in the 28th minute where the Wanderers capitalised and netted their opening goal of the evening. After moving forward it was Mooy who received the ball 35m out and after carrying it 15m he put through a pin-point pass, that whilst supposed to be for Ono, it was Joey Gibbs who got a boot to the ball and it proved to be a magic touch with Mark Bridge trailing through and striking the ball and pushing it past Bolton and putting the home side in front 1-nil.

That remained the highlight for the first half with the Wanderers happy to be going to the break with a 1-nil lead.

It took just six minutes before the Wanderers extended their lead, albeit through the assistance of the Heart. A Mooy pass sent Youssouf Hersi away down the right and into the clear. From there the Dutchman sent the ball into the penalty area and as Heart defender Patrick Gerhardt made his way back he got a boot to the ball and sent it past Bolton to put the Wanderers in front 2-nil.

With the Wanderers faithful celebrating it was the Heart who silenced them briefly when they clawed one back through Josip Tadic in the 58th minute. It was Aziz Behich who sent the ball in from the left and a quality volley from Tadic that went beyond an outstretched Ante Covic between the posts, making the score 2-1.

The Wanderers were dominating possession with some great movement forward but they were unable to convert any as the suspense in the crowd and on the pitch continued to mount heading into the final 10 minutes.

With three additional minutes added it was nail-biting stuff as both sides looked to control the possession. As the final whistle was blown the crowd erupted and the Wanderers were celebrating their first ever home win at Parramatta Stadium.

D’apuzzo spent five seasons at the Newcastle club making 102 appearances and says he has no hard feelings against the club but he would love to have the bragging rights after the 90 minutes of football tonight.

“I didn’t leave on bad terms and definitely don’t hold a grudge at all,” he said. “I had a break from the game and went back to the NSW Premier League where I had some good times but to get the opportunity here is something I have grabbed with both hands.

“I’m really enjoying my time here, I’m fitter than I have ever been and the whole group of guys are great to be around.

“I could go into the match saying

it’s just another match but I’d love to leave after match with the victory.

“With a lot friends still at the club and from the area it would be good to have the first bragging rights.”

Aside from the past connection with the visitors tonight, the 26-year-old knows it will be a challenge for the competition newcomers.

“They’re a side that like to play from the back and move forward and get it into the box regularly so we need to be tight at the back.

“Heskey will be a threat and we have seen him be successful already so he will be a danger. He (Heskey) obviously has a star quality but when you get out on the pitch you need to treat him like any other.”

The St George Police Boys junior credits a lot of the early success to Coach Tony Popovic who has turned his experience as a player into becoming a Coach that a lot of players in the future will want to play under.

“He is definitely setting the tone from the top. He knows what it is all about and we trust him because he has been there and done it all.

“He has had a massive influence on my game and I know I’m getting advice from one of the best that this country has produced.

“I’m loving this season and hopefully that is showing in our performances.

Aside from the great work that the Wanderers are doing on the pitch, D’apuzzo has credited the Wanderers Members and supporters for the atmosphere they are creating at Parramatta Stadium at home matches.

“We’ve really enjoyed the atmosphere at home matches and we feel as though they have been our 12th man on many occasions.

“I’ve seen elsewhere around the world that fans can get a bit frustrated with their team if they are not doing well but we definitely hear everything and hopefully the great support continues.”

Adam D’apuzzo comes up against his old club tonight and will be looking to show them what they have been missing out on since his departure. D’apuzzo has made that left back position his own at the Wanderers and is forming a great partnership with fellow defender Nikolai Topor-Stanley on that side of the pitch. After playing 102 matches for the Jets he will be familiar with a number of his opposition out on Parramatta Stadium today.

Emile Heskey will travel down the F3 this afternoon with the challenge of coming up against one of the best defensive sides in the Hyundai A-League. The experienced campaigner has scored four goals so far in his opening five games in the league and will be hoping to add to that tally at Parramatta Stadium. The Englishman has made 516 English Premier League appearances scoring 110 goals. On top of his stellar club career the 34-year-old has made 62 appearances for his homeland including representing the three lions at two FIFA World Cups.

All the used balls collected throughout the season – plus some brand new ones - will be donated to NRMA Insurance Ball Amnesty’s charity partner, the Salvation Army’s Oasis Youth Foundation.

The Oasis Youth Foundation coordinates the Sports Impact Program, which engages disadvantaged youths

through sport. Based in Western Sydney, their work promotes programs that develop positive community relationships and creates supportive environments through positive peers and strong role models.

After exchanging a ball as part of the NRMA Insurance Ball Amnesty, fans can win some great prizes by submitting the most creative or imaginative picture with their new Wanderers ball to the NRMA Insurance Facebook page (nrma.com.au/wanderers).

Catch the NRMA Insurance Football Amnesty trailer outside the stadium at Gate A before every game this season as well as throughout the Western Sydney community. Check nrma.com.au/wanderers for all the details on how you can be involved.

Southern Districts Soccer Football Association, referred to as SDSFA, the governing body of Soccer Football in the areas primarily of Fairfield/Liverpool celebrates their 66th birthday this year, with their humble begins back in 1947, when the round ball was kicked for the very first time in competitions for soccer football under their governance. The first competitions consisted of teams from Chester Hill, Fairfield United, St John’s Park, Fairfield Combined, Smithfield, Lansvale and Penrith. The early description of the area that SDSFA controlled was, “South of the pipe line from Regents Park to Prospect Reservoir, west of Regents Park to Yagoona Railway, south of the Hume Highway and west of Prospect Creek and Georges River taking in the Shire of Nepean “ and teams within this boundary were invited to join the Association.

Southern Districts has long been considered the nursery of football in Australia and this belief is held by many high ranking officials and media commentators. This is partly due to the large melting pot of ethnic and cultural backgrounds of those who belong to the game in our area. Local residents have included, Rale Rasic, Manfred Schaefer, Jim Fraser, Les Scheinflug, Raul Blanco, Tony Henderson, Ray Richards, Bertie Mariani, Ufuk Talay, Michael Beauchamp, Paul Okon, Harry Kewell just to name a few. The rest is down to the complete fanaticism of the fans, coaches and officials who run the game and who have always strived for the best for the players of the area.

For more than a quarter century Southern Districts has led the way with the number of coaches who have signed up for their coaches accreditation courses and their willingness to learn more about teaching their players. The evidence of

their hard work can be found in the Football History of this country with the many names listed as high profile players and coaches either originating or learning their trade in the area and the feats they have achieved over all these years.

With 9,000 registered players and another 1,500 officials committed to what is called the grassroots game within Southern Districts local teams from some 28 member Clubs consisting of, AC United, Austral, Bringelly Sports, Bossley Sports, Bonnyrigg FC, Canley Heights RSL, Chipping Norton. Fairfield Bulls, Fairfield Hotspurs, Fairfield Pats, Freeman Sports, Hinchinbrook, Horsley Park, Kemps Creek, Lansvale United, Liverpool Robins, Liverpool Olympic, Liverpool Rangers, Liverpool Warriors, Leppington Lions, Mt Pritchard, Moorebank Sports, Marconi Jnrs, Sydney Jnrs, South West Wanderers, Western Fury, Wetherill Park and White City and 3 social member clubs Colo Colo, Fairfield Eagles and FC Bossy Liverpool. A further 1,000 players and coaches involved in other elite forms of the sport for Clubs like, Marconi Stallions, Sydney United, Bonnyrigg White Eagles and Mountie’s Wanderers, just to mention a few, playing each season, it is no wonder why the area is so well known for their football greats.

Southern Districts has also been the leaders in many facets of the sport most notably in the governance of the game with a large number of volunteer officials also representing at Sydney Branch and State levels on Boards over twenty years. The Cadet Referees Scheme was first introduced in the area in 1991 which has been adopted by nearly all Sydney Associations since that

time. The State body has looked for the guidance and input of Southern Districts over many years before implementing new activities or schemes and has relied on the ‘Grassroots’ knowledge and experience of the SDSFA Board Members to assist them in formatting their plans prior to implementation.

This season in its 66th year since inception, Southern Districts still leads the way in achievements at State levels of competition and development of players and coaches alike. In this vein Southern Districts has commenced the School of Football, under the administration of Sam Lentini and John Alvarez, with the view to assisting and improving the local players in developing their talent for the game to the highest level, both locally and for their future.

The Southern Districts board made up of, President Andy Favaloro, Vice President John Vukasin, Secretary Ron Hughes, Treasurer Hugh Gulpers, Assistant Secretary Sam Kalouris and Marketing and Promotions Paul Casey in partnership with the Snapp (Special Needs Ability Program Providers) group and the President of the group Lucy Reggio, support and assist children with special needs in not only participate in the sport of Soccer Football as the Socca Kidz from Freeman Sports, but through special programs of bring Bowling, Dancing and Cricket to the children.

All in All the Southern Districts Association is all about the Community and insuring that the children have the very best available to them in all areas of Soccer Football Development and other activities for a healthy growth environment and their future.

The Wanderers NYL side have fought back and earned a 2-all with Adelaide United at Campbelltown Stadium in round three.

The match opened with a set of exciting exchanges resulting in close chances for both teams. In the fourth minute, Daniel Barac missed a shot from close range for the Wanderers. In the eighth minute, Adelaide found the back of the net but was denied by an offside call.

In the 19th minute, a miss from Adelaide’s Zenon Carabella rebounded off the post and was slotted in by Evan Kostopolous for Adelaide’s first goal.

Both teams had some opportunities from corners and free kicks which resulted in some near chances but nothing seemed to stick for either team until the 35th minute when a pass from Awer Mabil set up Kostopolous for his second goal of the match putting Adelaide up 2-0 at half-time.

There was a quiet start to the second half before in the 67th minute, Zakeriya Elrich put one past Adelaide Goal Keeper Nicholas Harpas to give the Wanderers their first score and then Jake McGing equalled the scores in the 75th minute with a chip kick into the back of the net.

Both sides tried to take the lead late in the match, but neither was able to capitalise and the match ended up in draw.

Wanderers 2 (Elrich 67’ & McGing 75’) drew with Adelaide United 2 (Kostopolous 19’ & 35’)

The Wanderers W-League side have registered their first ever victory defeating Perth Glory 2-nil at Campbelltown Stadium last Saturday.

After two narrow losses to Adelaide United and Sydney FC, the Wanderers women were out to register their first points.

The game started off quietly with both teams sharing equal possession early on. The first real opportunity of the match came about at the 18th minute via a Perth corner taken by Tabain but was quickly cut off by the Wanderers goal keeper Carly Telford.

As the match headed towards the half both teams had some close chances on goal before the deadlock was broken by the Wanderers in the 43rd minute. After a precise cross from Teigen Allen, Camilleri was able to capitalise and the put the

Wanderers up 1-0 just before half-time.The second half started out with more

energy before the 61st minute when substitute Linda O’Neill connected with Camilleri, who slotted it in close range for another goal, putting the score out 2-0.

The Wanderers defence stayed strong despite some late attempts by Perth and managed to keep the visitors scoreless. With this win, the women have finally added some much needed points to ladder and will give the team a confidence boost.
