DUTCH DESIGN HOTEL ARTEMIS is a design and art

hotel, inspired by the purity and originality of Dutch

Design. Dutch Design is known for its strong, original

shapes and forms, the pragmatic approach and the

use of new materials. Dutch artists love to make art

with a wink, which leads to positive inspiration and a

burst of liveliness.

From the lobby to the rooms, Dutch design is evident

in the hotel in all shapes and forms. The geometric

influences of the well known Dutch architects and

artists Mondriaan, Dudok and Rietveld can be seen in

the architecture of the building and the main spaces.

Throughout the hotel you will find privately owned

design furniture of contemporary Dutch designers such

as Marcel Wanders, Piet Hein Eek and Richard Hutten.

This design together with specially commissioned

artworks, forms the Artemis Art & Design private

collection.

Rietveld Academie Amsterdam (richting architectuur)

met zijn Rising Chair design en Shift & Merge Pavillion

design.

In

materiaal.

Zijn ontwerp aanpak gaf hem diverse onderscheidingen

voor de Rising Chair, zoals de Red Dot Design Award

voor Best Concept en Woodchallenge, voor zowel

Publiek & Jury prijs. The Rising Chair is opgenomen

geheel.

construction, he still did not know what shape the chair would

take in the end. This was determined by the various arches of

the wooden beams the chair is made of. Folding the chair into

its definitive form, as a creator, he felt a special connection to the

material he was working with. The solution was to turn every odd-

numbered beam in the exact opposite direction of its neighbour

for the final shape.

Rising Side Table [3]

Toelichting

Zo is

About

The Rising Table concept is part of the Rising furniture formula

which means that once again, the origins of this design can be

traced back to the rather simple idea of starting with a flat surface

that is capable of transforming into a piece of stylishly designed

furniture. In designing the Rising Table, he felt it was of paramount

importance that the source materials both dictated and guided the

ultimate design, while ensuring practical appliance and usability.

The incision pattern in the flat surface of the wood that resulted into

the creation of a latticework of ‘woven’ wooden beams that make

up the centre of the table.

as worden gedraaid.

About

The newest addition to the Rising Furniture line is the Rising Side

Table, an accessory that adds a surprising new twist to the familiar

theme.

The Rising Side Table design combines elegance and functional-

ity. The table top is carved from a single piece of wood, thereby

increasing the table’s practical uses considerably. Yet, the design

never loses its playful accents: thanks to clever construction choices

that create the illusion of a ‘levitating table top’. Another defining

aspect of the Rising Side Table is the fluid way the wooden beams

come together to holds up the table top. Usually, wood is known

for its straight, rigidness forms. Yet, by slightly twisting every single

beam around its axis, the Rising Side Table forms to create a sturdy

latticework that appears to be in a perpetual wave like motion.

Fat Furniture serie / series [4]

Toelichting

ontwerpen.

About

A collection of swollen, fat shaped furniture. It is inspired by

the rising rates of obesity in Western consumer society. If you

take a look at the streets these days you see a lot of people with

unhealthy overweight. The sometimes strange shaped bodies

inspired Lambert Kamps to make furniture with an ‘obese look’.

He started with covers around chair frames that he inflated and

afterwards filled with foam. It gave nice round shapes; they made

him think of friendly soft animals. These shapes are still the basic

shapes that he uses for current models.

werkt in Eindhoven.

Betonbank / Concrete Sofa [5]

Toelichting

About

The Concrete Sofa is a comfortable sofa for indoor use. Its side

panels are cast in a handmade mold and follow the contours of the

ergonomic seat position.

The development process took two years. The primary intent was

to use casting as a production method. Concrete is the selected

material: it is strong, sustainable and industrial and it meets

all structural requirements. Finding the right proportion of

components for the concrete mixture – that would successfully

work for the intricate shape of the mold – was the biggest technical

challenge.

The shape of the concrete panels serves the ergonomic seat,

resulting in a seamless interplay between them. The concrete

creates an attractive contrast with the upholstery, irrespective of

the applied colours.

Materiaal: Beton, wol, schuimrubber en staalMaterial: Concrete, wool, foam and steel.

Bulb TL [6]

Materiaal: koper en aluminiumMaterial: copper and aluminium

Toelichting

keer goed zien hoe zo’n gloeilamp is gefabriceerd.

About

The technological transition from incandescent to LED lighting

inspired Marcel van Heeswijk to design a lighting fixture for both

types of lamps.

The Bulb TL accommodates classic light bulbs as well as LED lamps,

even though they have different sizes.

The space between the hood and the lamp holder is open and

adjustable. This makes the lamps part of the fixture: the area be-

tween the fitting and the beginning of the sphere is visible. Before

the classic light bulb finally disappears, this lamp one more time

shows how a light bulb is manufactured.

Inmiddels is

Fatboy duidelijk ‘more than a beanbag’ en worden er

elk jaar nieuwe, sterke ontwerpen toegevoegd.

gedurfd, sympathiek, onvoorspelbaar, humoristisch,

Fatboy is known for their iconic and recognizable designs and their beautiful detailing About Fatboy:

It all started back in 1998. The Finnish designer

Jukka Setälä created the first Original bean bag and

a new way of seating was born. Alex Bergman saw an

opportunity and took his chance: in 2002 the Brand

Fatboy was introduced in the Netherlands. 12 Years

later, Fatboy turns out to be a brand that cannot be

pigeonholed. Their products are bold, unexpected

and oversized. They are known for their iconic and

recognizable designs and their beautiful detailing. To

Fatboy style means quality. Not only in the design

language, but also in the right choice of colours and

selection of materials. By now the collection is way

more than a beanbag, and there are more and more

strong designs added every year.

The inspiration comes from everyday products but

we like to give an original twist to our designs. When

it comes to product design we have re-thought the

way products are ‘supposed to look’ or ‘supposed

to feel’ and given them a little dose of that

typical Fatboy surprise. We take away everything

unnecessary until we’re left with something which

is iconic and instantly recognizable as a real Fatboy

product.

The Fatboy DNA revolves around seven important

brand values: bold, sympathetic, unexpected,

humorous, stylish, respectful and rebellious. These

values are the base of all the projects and the

essence of what Fatboy wants to accomplish: a

complete experience on every front.

De Edison Familie / The Edison Family [7b]

Toelichting

Edison the Medium. Dankzij de prachtige vorm, het materiaal en

subtiele kleur past de Medium in elk in- en exterieur. Extraatje:

komen!

About

The Edison Collection is a tribute to the inventor of the electric light

bulb (1879), Thomas Edison, but Edison The Grand is a far cry from

over-fussy Victoriana. As we have applied LED technology for the

lamps they light up from head to toe.

Uniquely wireless, Edison The Petit is portable, rechargeable and

ready for use wherever you want. Indoors as well as outdoors. The

lamp has three settings and lightens up your life for 6 to 24 hours

before it needs to be recharged.

Imagine the classic table lamp in an oversized format and you

have Edison The Grand. This iconic lamp has also three settings

so you can adjust the brightness to create the ideal mood for your

living room, garden or sundeck. A Fatboy twist: the red electric lead

matches our striking logo perfectly.

When an Edison the Petit is just not big enough or an Edison the

Grand is simply too big, Fatboy now has the perfect size! The Edison

the Medium. Due to its beautiful form, material and color the

Medium will fit in almost every interior- and exterior. Cherry on the

cake: By using the oversized red remote to dim the light you can set

the mood instantly without having to get out of your comfy chair!

Challenging people to get in motion using ‘serious gaming’About Esther Buur & Tessa Frunt I Gimmick Design

Esther and Tessa have known each other since the

study Human Kinetic Technology. Here is where they

found out that they form a strong team when it comes

to designing technical solutions for human movement

disorders. After their study, they both worked with

the same high-end rehabilitation devices, Tessa at the

rehabilitation centre and Esther at the manufacturer of

the device. After six successful years, they met again

and noticed they missed their creative cooperation.

They are used to challenge people to get in motion

using ‘serious gaming’. To apply this concept in

interior design was the next step, and became a

beautiful challenge.

Tessa and Esther design and fabricate objects that

stimulate the creativity of the user and challenge the

user to move. The handmade products are developed

in their workshop in Ash.Talent Award by Cappellini.

Toelichting

talloze grafische ontwerpen.

About

The Turn Table 32 is the first design within the concept ‘design that

will challenge you to move’. Together with the idea that changeable

objects are interesting and people are always looking for renewal,

they developed a changeable table top.

The combination of wood and steel in the Turn Table is the result

of the cooperation between Tessa and Esther. Tessa is working with

steel since she was young. And Esther loves to work with wood

because of its warm and natural appearance. They notice a trend

in interior design of geometric shapes and graphic drawings, and

conclude that the triangle is ideal for application in the Turn Table

and the creation of numerous graphic designs.

Satori [10]

Toelichting

About

The grand size is the first thing you will notice, the Satori lamp has

an imposing presence. Touch or hold the lamp, and you will be

surprised by how light it is. The secret lies in the materials.

As a little boy, Daniel Hulsbergen was fascinated by the modelling

of glider planes. He dreamed of building one for himself one day.

Unfortunately, they were very expensive in those days.

Now, years later, he still dreams of glider planes. Therefore, he

overtook the technique and material for making a glider and used

them to design the Satori. The materials used in this design are

balsa wood and oratex which is used to cover the wings of a glider

and gives the lamp altogether it's ultra-lightweight.

The Satori has an inner and outer frame which both are octagons.

The smaller inner frame is fully covered with the oratex fabric to

have a similar effect as a lampshade. The outer frame only has

four sides covered, meaning the light will be divided and diffused

further into the room.

sieraden, decoratie-keramiek / jewellery, decorative ceramics

Judith Bloedjes is beeldend kunstenaar (1968). Haar

A journey into shape and form led to a broad diversity of unique specimensAbout Judith Bloedjes

Judith Bloedjes (1968), visual artist, wants to give

ceramics the appraisal it deserves. She designs and

makes highly wearable porcelain jewellery. Her use

of manifold textures and materials like porcelain and

silver give these objects an industrial appearance.

However, upon closer inspection they reveal a soft

and sober character. A journey into shape and form

led to a broad diversity of unique specimens.

Bloedjes has also designed a whole range of unusual

design objects made of her favourite material

porcelain, that all seem to have one thing in common:

they are so exceptional, it's quite hard to tell what

purpose they serve until they are actually in use and

thus come to life.

Besides Bloedjes is currently working on live

performances of fresh porcelain jewellery made live

on models in ‘a catwalky’ surrounding.

De meubels verraden een wiskundige inspiratieOver IT’S LATTA

Meubels en houtobjecten maakte Paul Latta al

lang.

In

The furniture is inspired by mathematicsAbout IT’S LATTA

Paul Latta has been making furniture and wood

objects for already a long time. But in 2010 he

his partner Femia Kievits he founded IT'S LATTA. The

duo designs especial furniture, both autonomous

work or under commission of individuals. IT'S LATTA

Toelichting

About

In the exhibition ‘Uptime’, last year in De Kunstkerk in Amsterdam,

the focus was on large pieces of furniture like a writing desk,

sideboard, dressers and coffee tables. For the D&A exhibition

'Shapes' is chosen for a series of side tables which are designed

especially for the sheet material bamboo. The shape of the tables

and the lines in the bamboo strengthen each other. Through

miter sawing all the corners, nice continuous lines and invisible

joints are created. Additionally, a bamboo strip of another colour

accentuates in turn the shape of the table. The angles used in the

models and on the sides of the material show to the fine structure

of the bamboo. All designs are named after a letter or character:

Omega, F, G, Z, S, W, O and Et (@).

Balans vinden in onderwerp, compositie, vorm en kleurOver Ellen Vroegh

Ellen Vroegh studeerde aan de Academie voor

Beeldende Kunsten Willem de Kooning te Rotter-

dam. Sinds 1993 woont zij in ’t Gooi.

digitale ontwerpen, fresco’s, pasteltekeningen,

beschilderde stenen en bijzettafeltjes.

Warme kleuren, zoals terra en okergeel worden

afgewisseld met krachtige primaire kleuren en

zwart-wit composities. Haar uitgangspunt is om

een balans te vinden in onderwerp, compositie,

vorm en kleur. Materialen; o.a. acrylverf, pastelkrijt,

houtskool, textiel, gips, plastic, hout en metaal.

Gereedschap; kwast, spons, paletmes en haar

handen

vonden.

toegestane plaatsen had opgehangen.

Finding balance in subject, composition, form and colourAbout Ellen Vroegh

Ellen Vroegh studied at the Academy of Arts, Willem

de Kooning in Rotterdam. Since 1993 she lives in

't Gooi. (NL). Her art varies in style with changing

palette: warm colours such as terracotta and other

alternate with strong primary colours and black and

white compositions. Her work consists of digital

design, side-tables, painted stones, paintings:

modern figurative or abstract. Her conception is

mainly found in composition, form, balance and

colour. Materials: acrylic paint, pastels, charcoal and

collage materials. Tools: brush, sponge, palette knife

and her hands.

During her exhibition in the town hall of Huizen in

2008, two of her paintings “Danseuses Exotiques”

and “Piano Woman” received national and

international recognition when she had to remove

them after complaints of some Muslim men. She

did not agree and informed the press about this

censorship.

After publication in various newspapers about this

censorship she was approached by the liberal party

to exhibit these works in the Freethinkers room

of the parliament in The Hague, which had been

established in 2008 after a number of incidents of

censorship that took place at the same time.

Over Inge Simonis

ontdekte.

About Inge Simonis

Inge Simonis studied design at the Art and Design

Academy St. Joost in Breda (NL). After her study

she moved back to The Hague, the city where she

grew up.

Simonis designs and produces small and exclusive

series of functional objects, which range from

tableware to vases and lamps. Simonis’ work is

characterized by its clear and minimalist design,

which is often underpinned by a sense of surprise

and chance. Function is at the centre of her work, but

Simonis enjoys playing and extending this concept,

she likes to be lead and surprised by coincidence in

the process.

Toelichting

In haar ontwerp

gebruikte zij de karakteristieke vormen van schoorsteenpijpen

buiten hun oorspronkelijke context en ontwikkelde daarmee

gebruiksvoorwerpen voor het interieur. Speciaal voor deze

expositie vervaardigde zij in haar atelier een beperkte oplage

geproduceerd gekleurde vazen.

About

The design of the vases is influenced by the shapes of chimney

pots. Emphasizing the natural beauty of objects that were primarily

engineered to serve a function. In this collection Inge used the

characteristic shapes of the common Dutch chimney pots, out of

their natural context. During the process of designing she discovered

the endless possibilities of combining these industrial parts. For this

exhibition she produced the coloured limited edition series.

vormgeving in metaal en kunststoffen / design in metal and synthetics

Over Anne Rose Regenboog

bewerken.

Unpredictable and dynamic: to be worn or to enjoy as an objectAbout Anne Rose Regenboog

During her education at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy

in Amsterdam, mathematical figures appeared to

be the basis of her work. Originally she presented

jewellery. After several years it became clear that

not all her ideas could be translated into the form of

jewellery. So she developed new work on larger scale

in metal en paintings.

Still, goldsmith is the key of her work. She teaches in

the discipline and uses it to develop ideas in metal

studies on a small scale.

waarbinnen allerlei karakteristieke configuraties gestalte krijgen.

About

The installation made of cubes is serial work. It started out of an

elementary module: open wire objects in the shape of cubes,

within which a diversity of characteristic configurations come to

shape. This is how a three-dimensional game is created with lines

where the inner space is never locked in.

Sieraden / jewellery [20a, b]Toelichting

About

The jewellery of Anne Rose Regenboog, that is often unpredictable

and dynamic, shows the same idiom. It is very wearable and can be

enjoyed as objects of art.

Lijnen, rasters en vier-kanten creeëren optimale ruimtelijke effectenOver Tonneke Sengers:

Tonneke Sengers (1959, Breda) woont en werkt

in Haarlem. Sengers studeerde monumentale

vormgeving aan de Gerrit Rietveld Academie

te Amsterdam, waar de samenhang tussen

beeldende kunst en architectuur centraal stond.

Haar muurschilderingen en muursculpturen gaan in

dialoog met de architectonische ruimte zelf. Sengers

werkt met minimale middelen: lijnen, rasters en

vierkanten. Daarmee worden optimale ruimtelijke

effecten gecreëerd. Deze abstract geometrische

vormentaal is toepasbaar op elke schaal zonder

dat zij kracht verliest. Inspiratiebronnen bevinden

buitenland.

Lines, screens and squares are creating optimum three-dimensional effectsAbout Tonneke Sengers:

Tonneke Sengers ( 1959, Breda) lives and works in

Haarlem. Sengers studied monumental design at

the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam where

the connection between art and architecture, was

the main theme. Her murals and wall sculptures

are engaged in a dialogue with the space around.

Sengers works with minimal means: lines, screens

and squares with which optimum three-dimensional

effects are created. This abstract geometrical

language can be applied on every scale without

losing power. Sources of inspiration are found in the

environment, especially there, where the contrasts

between open and closed spaces are the most

striking, on a scale from window envelopes and holes

in ring binders to buildings she passes by train or by

car. Tonneke Sengers exhibits her work at home and

abroad.

Mobiele muurschilderingen / Mobile murals ‘Up the Wall’ [22a-f]

Toelichting

Sinds 2010 werkt Tonneke Sengers aan mobiele muur-

schilderingen ‘Up the Wall’.

mijn muurschilderingen heel dicht benaderen’.

About

Since 2010 Tonneke Sengers is working on ‘mobile murals’.

Tonneke Sengers: ‘I found a way to make mobile works, which

are very close to the design of my murals’. The design of this wall

sculptures ’Up the Wall’ is first drawn on the computer and then

carved in aluminium by a laser cutter. The open-worked aluminium

is giving an important role to the wall behind and the space

between them. Composition and colour are accurately defined to

bring forward the intended dialogue between illusion and reality.

The counter-shape becomes an interval in which the effects of

Sengers interventions resonate. They form, indirectly, a new and

often surprising reality. It looks like Sengers' work is coming to you

in two ways. You have the idea of being able to decipher something

and at the same time you can disappear without effort in the space

the work displays to you.
