BPHS Chapter 6: Shloka 10-11: Saptamsha = one seventh of a Rashi

From David Frawley - The Astrology of the Seers. (2000). p. 186: SAPTANS "Each sign is divided into seven equal parts of 04° 17' 09". The first 1/7 of odd signs is governed by the sign itself, with the rest following the signs in order through the zodiac. For even signs, the first 1/7 corresponds to the sign seventh from it, and the rest follow in order from that. Hence, the first seventh of Aries of an odd sign is Aries; the second. Taurus; the third and so on to Libra. The first seventh of Taurus (an even sign) would be Scorpio, the sign seventh from it. The second seventh division would be Sagittarius; the third, Capricorn; and so on to Taurus as its last seventh. In this way we are merely going through the signs in order. The following are the harmonic 1/7 divisions of the sign: 1. 00° 0' 0" to 04° 17' 09" 2. 04° 17' 09" to 08° 34' 16" 3. 08° 34'17" to 12° 51'26" 4. 12° 51'26" to 17° 08'34" 5. 17° 08'34" to 21° 25'43" 6. 21° 25'43" to 25° 42'52" 7. 25° 42'52" to 30° 00'00" Thus if the Moon is located at 25° 10' Taurus, it would be in the sixth division, which would be Aries (sixth from Scorpio). "

"Putra" the creative intelligence is seen through:

• 5th house from radix lagna and L-5 • 5th from Chandra and its Lord • 5th from procreative karaka Jupiter and its Lord • lord of L-5's navamsha house

Barbara Pijan Lama : Field of Psychic Expectation for Matters of : Fruits (11) of the Yoke (7) (gains from yuvati = products of partnership and alliances) Ayurvedic medical prescriptions based on assessment of the seven human-body chakra (wheels) The traditional fruit of marriage being children, f rom Saptamsha is gained (presuming an accurate birth time) a confirming level of detail regarding children. To determine the prognosis for Children, look first (of course) to all the effects upon putra bhava [the 5th house of creativity] itself. Check the status of child-karaka Guru; check dharma-bhava 5th-from-5th; Check 5th-from-Guru; Check 5th-from-Chandra

Now, check the D-7 = Saptamsha. The house which defines and energizes "children" sits in 3/11 angle to the children-house: it is yuvati bhava, the 7th house of marriage. It is considered that the relationship between the two parents (bhava-7) is the basis (lagna) from which the prospects for children should be measured. Thus children, a fruit (11) of marriage, are seen from D-7. Examine kalatra bhava (7) in the radix. Will the radix 7th house generate the community support (11th-from-7th = putra) and personal courage (3rd-from-7th = dharma) necessary to realize its goals? Once the lords of domains 5 and 9 are confirmed positive for children, look for confirmation of the "fruits" of the 7th house in the seventh divisional chart: D-7/Saptamsha. Saptamsha reveals fine detail of how the "results" of marriage manifest. PUTRA BHAGYA means being blessed with good children who make you happy. This is a gift from your previous live. The 5th house is related to the merits of the past life. Hence the 5th house is also the house of children. Opinions of a few scholars on D/7 chart and children:

- analysis of Saptamsa is to be done to see the fruits of this sexual interaction, i.e., children.

- D/7 chart indicates happiness from children and grand children. This means the spread of dynasty.

- Odd sign on D/7 ascendant, occupied or aspected by benefic planets gives comfort and happiness from male children to the native.

- Even sign on D/7 ascendant, occupied or aspected by benefic planets indicates happiness and comfort from female children.

- If the ascendant of the D/7 chart is occupied or aspected by malefic planets, or if the ascendant lord of D/7 is afflicted, the native may have great difficulty in having children or may not have children or remains worried about them.

- The lagna lord of D-1, 5L, 7L, 9L, karaka Jupiter and Venus are to be seen in relation to Lagna of D-7. If there is any affliction one may have delayed progeny.

The positive role of Fruitful Signs in conception: Child birth is promised if your 5th cusp occupies a fruitful sign like Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces The negative role Barren Signs in conception: Aries (Mesha), Gemini (Mithuna), Leo (Simha) and Virgo (Kanya) are called barren or sterile signs. Barren signs related to the afflicted 5th house and its lord is indication of being childless. A sign of few children inclining to barrenness.

Child Birth Denied : If the the lords of your 5th or 11th house occupy barren signs and if the lagna or ascendant cusp falls in any of these barren signs, then child birth is denied. Child birth may be delayed or denied if the lord of lagna, occupies a barren sign and receives malefic aspects from any evil planets. Formulas signifying positive or negative indications of conception in the male and female horoscopes in sidereal astrology. The formula for the male chart is known as Bheeja Sphutha while the formula for female chart is known as Bheeja Kshetra.

Formula of finding Bheeja Sputha for the male chart:

a) Add the longitudes of the Sun, Venus and Jupiter b) Then expunge the multiples of 12 signs from the total and name it “A” c) Then find out the navamsa position of “A”.

How to find out the indications:

- If “A” falls in odd signs in both the rashi and navamsa positions, the indications are positive.

- If the position of “A” falls in odd and even signs in either the rash or navamsa positions, then it indicates that the native needs medical assistance.

- If both the positions are in even signs, then it would difficult to have off springs.

Formula of finding Bheeja Kshetra for the female chart:

a) Add the longitudes of the Moon, Mars and Jupiter b) Then expunge the multiples of 12 signs from the total and name it “B”. c) Then find out the navamsa position of “B”.

How to find out the indications:

- If “B” falls in Even signs in both the rashi and navamsa positions, the indications are positive.

- If the position of “B” falls in odd and even signs in either the rash or navamsa positions, then it indicates that the native needs medical assistance.

If both the positions are in odd signs, then it would difficult to have off springs.

The auspicious conditions for begetting children are summarized below: - When the lagna Lord, Lord of the Moon’s sign, 5th Lord and 7th

Lord are powerful in addition to powerful Jupiter. - When the above planets are in angles (Kendra) tines (Trikonas) or

in the 11th house. - When the 5th house is aspected or occupied by benefics. - When there are more benefic points in the 5th house from Jupiter

in Ashtakavarga, and The Santan Tithi falls in the bright half of the Moon. Santhan Tithi is progeny. Tithi and can be arrived at be deducting the longitude of the Sun from the longitude of the Moon. Multiply this difference by 5 and arrive at ‘Santhan Tithi’. Sarpasapa Yogas - there is a b3elief that there will be no children or children may die due to curse of serpants, with the following combinations:

- 5th Bhava should be occupied by Rahu and aspected by Mars or the 5th should be a sign of Mars and occupied by Rahu.

- 5th Lord in conjunction with Rahu and Saturn in the 5th house aspected by or associated with the Moon.

- Jupiter-Karka of children in association with Mars, Rahu in Lagna and 5th Lord in ‘dusthana’ gives to rise to Sarpasapa Yoga.

- 5th house being sign of Mars must be conjoined by Rahu and aspected by or associated with Mercury. It may be noted that Rahu and Mars have a significant role to play in denying or killing the children. The combination of the Moon and Saturn normally become indicative of ‘sorrow’ if connected with 5th house.

The combinations or yogas for adoption of a child : Dattak Santane/putra: - According to Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) if the 5th lord is in the 12th bhava, the native will be bereft of happiness from his own sons. He will have an adopted or purchased son. - Malefic aspect on 5th (and 9th) lords/houses (thus denying children) and also on the 7th house (denying ability to procreate). - Effect of Saturn and Mars on 5th house either by occupation or aspect afflicts the house of children. - Lord of 5th house in barren signs, i.e. those signs belonging to Saturn and Mercury. - Influence of a benefic on the 5th house or its lord is a must to have an adopted child. A few planetary combinations responsible for child adoption: 1) Ketu in the 12th to Jupiter or conjunct Jupiter with less degree; 2) The 5th lord or 5th house conjunct with the 6th, 8th or 12th lords and in Papakartari Yoga; 3) The 5th house being in a sign of mars occupied by Saturn and Rahu; 4) 5th lord occupying a house of Mercury and Jupiter being placed in one of the houses of Mercury; 5) Saturn in the 5th, exchange of 1, 5 lords and a weak Jupiter; 6) 5th lord and Mercury conjunct in 6,8 or 12 and aspected by a Natural benefic; 7) 5th lord conjunct Mars and aspected by Saturn; 8) 8th lord in 5th, 5th lord in 12th and Jupiter in a kendra; 9) Saturn in the 5th with rahu in 4th or 12th conjunct Malefics; 10) The lord of 5th to the Moon conjunct Venus and posited in less fruitful sign or in barren sign and aspected by malefics; 11) 7th lord in 5th conjunct malefics and Jupiter being powerful; 12) The ascendant falls in an even sign and the lord of the 5th house occupies the 4th in the Navamsa of Saturn; 13) The association of the lord of the 5th house, the Sun and Mercury occurs in a Navamsa of Saturn or of an even sign; 14) A strong benefic posited in the 5th house is not aspected by another benefic;

15) The 5th house coincides with Capricorn or Aquarius and Saturn aspected by theMoon is placed therein; 16) The Moon occupies a sign of Saturn falling as the 5th house and Mercury is without any point of strength; 17) When Mars and Saturn occupy the 5th house and when the ascendant lord is in a sign of Mercury or is associated with Mercury; 18) The 7th lord in the 11th house and Saturn or Mercury in the 5th when the lord of the 5th house combines with a benefic; 19) If the 5th house falls in Gemini, Virgo, Capricorn or Aquarius and has the association or aspect of Saturn or Mandi; 20) If the 9th house is afflicted with Saturn and Mandi and Lagna Lord is badly disposed to the 9th house and 9th Lord. If the 5th Lord is a eunuch planet, the 5th house is conjoined with or aspected by a eunuch planet and also occupied by Mandi and Jupiter is powerful
