Executive Summary

During its third year, NEWCOM# was very successful in terms of Dissemination Events. Three events were organized at the premises of associate partners from industry. Next, several small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were invited to a panel targeted to entrepreneurship organized during the first day of Final NEWCOM# Workshop which was held in Barcelona on 14 – 15 October 2015. The list of third year events is as follows:

• Telecom Italia, Turin, Italy, 26 February 2015 • Ericsson, Stockholm, Sweden, 4 May 2015 • Telefonica, Madrid, Spain, 16 June 2015 • SME event at the Final NEWCOM# Workshop, Barcelona, Spain, 14 - 15 Oct. 2015

This deliverable reports on the organization of these events and gives their programs, lists of participants, and highlights. The events were quite successful in terms of interaction between the NEWCOM# researchers and leading European industry in wireless communications.

1. Introduction NEWCOM# places a strong effort to disseminate to European industry the research results of the network of excellence (NoE). In order to increase the efficiency with respect to the two previous phases (NEWCOM and NEWCOM++), it was decided to organize the dissemination events directly at the premises of the Associate partners from industry. In this way, the interested personnel from the host institution can participate without any traveling, and people from other companies in the same geographical region can attend provided that they have no conflict of interest with the host institution. The original plans of the project were to organize 2 events during the first year, 4 events during the second year, and 4 events during the third year. The first dissemination event took place on 17 June 2013 at Orange Labs, Issy les Moulineaux, near Paris, and Deliverable D3.4.2 issued at the end of the first year of the project reported on this event. As indicated in that deliverable, dissemination took a slow start and no other dissemination event was organized during the first year. To catch up and keep on track with the initial plans, a second event was organized on 23 January 2014 at Portugal Telecom in Lisbon. Although it was organized during the second year of the NoE, this event counted for the second event of the first year. During the second year of the project, 4 events were held as initially planned. The associate partners which hosted these events are: NEC Labs Europe (Heidelberg, 19 February 2014), Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs (Stuttgart, 20 March 2014), Avea Labs (Istanbul, 4 April 2014), and Nokia Networks (Munich, 29 October 2014). The first three of these dissemination events were reported in Deliverable D3.4.3 issued at the end of October 2014. Due to its scheduling at the end of the second year of the project, the dissemination event at Nokia networks was not reported in Deliverable D3.4.3. Reporting on this event is therefore made in this deliverable along with the third year events. During the third year of the project, we held the following three dissemination events:

• Telecom Italia, Turin, Italy, 26 February 2015

• Ericsson, Stockholm, Sweden, 4 May 2015

• Telefonica, Madrid, Spain, 16 June 2015

It was also intended to hold a dissemination event at Thales in Genevilliers near Paris. After scheduling it for 2 June 2015, this event had to be cancelled due to unexpected circumstances. To compensate for this cancellation, NEWCOM# Executive Board decided to invite SMEs to attend the final NEWCOM# event and organize a panel on entrepreneurship and SMEs by soliciting some people with an established record in the field. The Final NEWCOM# Event was held in Barcelona, Spain, on 14 - 15 October 2015, and that panel was held in the afternoon of the first day. This deliverable reports on the event held at Nokia networks, the three dissemination events held during the third year of the project, and on the panel dedicated to SMEs held during the Final N# Event. Sections 2 – 6 give a short report on these 5 events, respectively. Our conclusions are given in Section 7. Finally, the technical programs and participants lists of the different events are given in Annexes A – H.

2. Dissemination Event at Nokia Networks This event was hosted by Nokia Networks in Munich on 29 October 2014, i.e., at the very end of the second year of the project. The original contact with Nokia Networks was established by the Technical University of Dresden, and our host from Nokia was Heiko Straulino. In terms of attendance, this was the largest dissemination event organized by NEWCOM#. The number of attendees was 35, 9 of which from N# and 26 from Nokia Networks. The program of this event is given in Annex A, and the attendance list in Annex B.

NEWCOM# presentations were well received. Volker Ziegler from Nokia Networks made a presentation entitled “Cognitive and Cloud Optimized Architecture for the 5G Era” giving the company’s vision for 5G. Also, the program included a “5G mm-Wave Software Demo” by Berthold Panzner. The dissemination day program generated a lot of interaction and discussions between N# researchers and Nokia Networks R&D engineers. 3. Dissemination Event at Telecom Italia This dissemination event took place on 26 February 2015 at the premises of Telecom Italia in Turin. Our contact for the organization of this event was Fabio Luigi Bellifemine. The event was attended by 23 people, 14 of which from Telecom Italia. The technical program is shown in Annex C, and the attendance list is given in Annex D. After welcoming the participants at the start of the program, our colleagues from Telecom Italia took the N# participants on a tour to visit their Innovation Lab, where they showed a number of demos and gave some talks. This was a very good way to start the dissemination day. N# presentations were of significant interest to Telecom Italia, and as it turned out, they made contact with Roberto Verdone after the event and agreed to finance a Ph.D. student at the University of Bologna. This was the second dissemination event (after that at NEC Labs Europe in Heidelberg) where there was immediate follow-up actions right after the event. As a follow up action, EuWIn@UniBO organized a full-day meeting in Bologna with the Head of the Telecom Italia Future Center (Gian Paolo Balboni) and three researchers from his organization. All activities of EuWIn@UniBo were reviewed during the meeting, and two actions were taken:

• Establishment of a collaboration by opening a Ph.D. position at the University of Bologna fully funded for three years by Telecom Italia for research to be performed in the context of Smart Cities. This activity is to start on 1 November 2015.

• Discussions started for possible duplication of the FLEXTOP testbed at the premises of Telecom Italia Future Centre in Venice.

4. Dissemination Event at Ericsson This dissemination event took place on 4 May 2015 at the premises of Ericsson in Kista, Stockholm. Our main contact from Ericsson was Afif Osseiran, former coordinator of the METIS project. The event was attended by 14 people: 6 people from NEWCOM# and 8 from Ericsson. We were expecting more people to attend, but apparently, there was a collision with another event, which prevented a number of Ericsson engineers to attend. Still, the presentations by both sides generated a lot of technical discussions. The technical program of this event is given in Annex E, and the attendance list is shown in Annex F.

This dissemination event was advertised within Ericsson as a joint workshop between NEWCOM# and Ericsson Research. There were indeed more presentations from the host than in other dissemination events. After a presentation on Ericsson’s 5G vision, we had two presentations from Ericsson engineers, one on Massive MIMO and one on New Waveform Design. These topics are considered to be key elements of future 5G. 5. Dissemination Event at Telefonica This dissemination event was hosted by Telefonica in Madrid on 16 June 2015. The number of attendees was 10 (5 from N# and 5 from Telefonica). Our contact for the organization of this event was Ignacio Barberana, who made a presentation on the 5G vision of Telefonica. We also had a presentation from Telefonica on reducing the latency in OFDM, but this was not a brand new result. Our colleagues from Telefonica made it clear that the company is not strongly involved in advanced research, and therefore there are very small chances of pursuing with follow up actions. The program of this dissemination event is given in Annex G, and the attendance list is shown in Annex H. 6. SME event at NEWCOM#’s Final Workshop The Final NEWCOM# Event was held in Barcelona on 14 – 15 October 2015. It was organized as a joint workshop between NEWCOM# and COST Action IC 1004. The acronym of that event was JNCW 2015. The program included presentations of NEWCOM# and of Cost Action IC 1004, technical presentations from different work packages, and the highlight was the panel on the topic of entrepreneurship and the SMEs. Announcement and description of this panel are given in what follows. The SME event was very well attended both by NEWCOM# and COST researchers and external representatives, since it was profusely announced beyond the two communities at the regional, national and international levels. Both attendees and panelists engaged in a number of lively discussions and interactions. Remote access was provided via Webex both to attendees and to Raymond Knopp who gave a presentation on OpenAirInterface from EURECOM The session was recorded to facilitate further dissemination after the event. The slides presented by panelists and the corresponding videorecording are available from the project’s website http://www.newcom-project.eu/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=175&Itemid=227.

7. Conclusions After a slow start during the first year of the project, the dissemination activity of NEWCOM# accelerated during the second year and continued on the same pace during the third year. The objective of holding 10 dissemination events during the three years of the project has been achieved, and those events generated a lot of interaction with associate partners from industry. The most interesting events were naturally those organized with associate partners which have a strong R&D activity. This includes Ericsson, Nokia Networks, Alcatel-Lucent Bell labs, and NEC Labs Europe on the vendor side, and Orange Labs and Telecom Italia on the network operator side. The other events (Avea Labs, Portugal Telecom, and Telefonica) were more modest in terms of outreach and potential interaction due to the fact that these companies do not have large R&D labs. Also, the Final Event organized jointly with COST Action IC 1004 included an SME event and provided a very interesting discussion on how we can go from research to founding a startup. This event benefited from the experience of several SMEs including TrellisWare, Quantenna, Signadyne, Siradel, and Sistelbanda. As of now, the dissemination events held at the premises of associate partners gave concrete follow up actions with NEC Labs Europe (Heidelberg) and Telecom Italia (Turin).
