LTG's Message I hope everyone has had a wonderful time back at school! The month of October is usually associated with Halloween... and guess what that means? Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF! This is an annual fundraiser that happens in the month of October, in which all proceeds go to The Eliminate Project (eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus). In countries where people lack healthcare education and services, a baby can be infected with tetanus during birth and can die within days. That short lifetime is agonizing—a heartbreaking struggle to breathe and to cope and marked by convulsions triggered by the slightest sound or contact. But this disease is easily preventable with your help! $1.80 can save a mother and her future babies- YOU can save a life. Every month, I will post a challenge that I would like for you all to complete. School Updates

August is here, which means that we're back at school! The Project Directors led many service events this month, such as CMF craft days, National Night Out, Backpack Giveaway and Carnival, and Relay for Life, giving us a total of 403 service hours this month! We teamed up with the Aktion Club to work together throughout the year, and we are looking very forward to that! Our Socialist planned a board bonding at the president's house where we watched movies, had a potluck, and bonded through an interactive and fun icebreaker! Our first general meeting was very successful, with at least a hundred people present! Independence High School's Key Club's year may have just started, but we are already off to a fantastic start! Right now, we're looking forward to RTC and FRN! Hope to see you there.

Dundundundun! School is here…again. Bleh. Summer is over, vacation is over, and the London Olympics are over, but now we have to focus on learning our books, and learning how to be a good citizen of our community. What better way to learn than through Key Club? These past few weeks, we’ve been prepping for starting school again, but we’ve also been brainstorming more service learning events and ways to attract more members to our club! Watch out guys, because American is heading for the gold again!

In late July to August, Irvington participated in several activities. On July 22nd, we attended the 28th TCAAT (Taiwanese & Chinese American Athletic Tournament) in the Bay Area. This year's theme was Flying Dragons and Leaping Tigers, and we key clubbers volunteered to help direct athletes, hold flags, manage booths, among other activities. Along with 400 other volunteers, in the end we were able to raise money for the Taiwanese & Chinese American programs in the Bay Area. On August 16th, Irvington held a fundraiser at Sweet Tomatoes in order to raise money to reduce membership dues and other events. Although it was a small-scale fundraiser, we were able to bond with the other key clubbers around us and have a good time together. That same weekend, Irvington also volunteered with Kiwanis with their annual "Stuff the Bus" event. Even though it was a last minute preparation, Irvington was able to send seven volunteers to help the Kiwanis family and was well-represented. We were able to get many school donations and met a lot of generous people, so overall, it was a successful service event. Because school is also starting up, our publicity officers hosted a Maze Day prep on August 25th to prepare for our Maze Day booth in order to attract under and upperclassman into joining Key Club. We spent the entire day preparing clothespins, posters, poster boards, capes, and more to attract people to our booth and hung out with some of our officers and members while doing so. Finally when Maze Day rolled around, we gave out candy and cold water for signups and advertised for three days. We were able to meet a lot of new high schoolers and potential key clubbers, so it was a rewarding experience. In the end we were able to collect over 500 emails to send out more information :) Hopefully when the school year begins we will be able to increase our official membership and raise more money for PTP and ELIMINATE!

James Logan James Logan Key club so far we are trying to raise atleast $100 dollars by selling food during our Club Fair at James Logan that's coming up, by selling some snacks and dessert goodies for our school. Our currently goal is to get 120 hours this school year. And we're aiming for at least 10 active members but aiming for 20. So far we have 24 hours earned from Relay for Life which we collaborated with Washington Highs key Club.

KIPP has been doing many things to prepare our school for the new year. Club Day has not arrived yet, but we are really looking forward to it. We have many events planned within the next few months and cannot wait to officially get started at school. We’re planning to participate in Walk to End Alzheimer's, Light the Night, PurpleStride, and many other events.

For the month of August, Milpitas Key Club volunteered at San Jose's Color Me Rad on September 1, which was a 5k color run that benefited the Pacific Autism Center for Education. Unlike any other half marathon, volunteers were able to pummel paints at passing runners! The next day, we held a car wash at the 76 Gas Station on W. Calaveras Blvd. Key Clubbers enthusiastically washed cars and socialized with others as they raised money for the club. September 4 and 6 were our club rush days, when we would run around with posters, hand out pins, offer face paint in the shape of keys and the letter K, and shout on the top of our lungs with no shame. We received a bigger turnout than we expected, and we hope that the large number of people interested is indicative of the rest of the year! On September 6, we were also recognized at the Milpitas Relay for Life ceremony held at the Milpitas Community Center. We were invited as one of the top volunteer and fundraising youth clubs for this year!

This past month in September after orientation, MSJ Key Club has created a new facebook group named "MSJ Key Club 2012-2013", anyone is welcome to join and invite friends as well! After orientation, we are planning for our first official club meeting on Thursday September 27 at lunch! We will definitely talk about how Key Club is the largest international service club with countless leadership opportunities! We are excited to kick off the year in spirited fashion to recruit and gain more members. Looking forward, in October we will have some service events such as Fremont Run 4 Education. Also we will be continuing our Trick or Treat for Unicef during the last week, which is a huge fundraiser!

It's finally the beginning of a new school year and to kick it off, we're having our first club meeting next Wednesday, September 12! We're going to be announcing the upcoming events like Fall Rally North and local community events, like Newark Days and the Alzheimer's walk. There's also going to be foooooood!!"We're all super nervous but excited at the same time. Here's to an amazing year! Good luck to everyone and I wish you all a successful year! :)

Club Day has just passed at San Jose High and our goals for recruitment last month have been reached! We gained about 200 new members, while we know not all will stay we hope for about half and that would make us a success according to the goals we have set for ourselves! We were the only club at our school to attract that much attention which we hope to continues. Our first general meeting is Wednesday they 5th of September, our goals for that meeting is to explain what Key Club is all about and how we get help others while having tons of fun! The buzz for Fall Rally North has already started and it is the perfect way to start off the year with tons of fun, but we would like to balance it out which is why we are adding more service events than we usually do every year.

After a few weeks of wait, Club Day finally came! We anxiously waited behind the Key Club booth posters and a

bag of candy in hand, awaiting for new members (mostly freshmen) and old members to come and pick up an

application. As soon as the bell rang for lunch to begin and people started to swarm towards the booths, the officers

ran in all kinds of directions with the posters. We all started yelling, "JOIN KEY CLUB!" Officers behind the booth

passed out candy. After about fifteen minutes of advertising, all of our applications were gone. We even had to start a

sign-up sheet so people could access the application online! Club Day was definitely a successful turnout.

August DCM Recap

You know you’re at FRN when:

you cheer ―I feel good, oh I feel so good…‖ and it gets louder and louder every time it’s chanted

all you see are Key Clubbers dressed in nothing but spirit gears from head to toe

you hear the amount that each division bids for LTGs.

That’s all the sneak peeks that you will get from FRN, the rest you will have to find out yourself on October 27th (10 am – 10pm) at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Vallejo, CA. Fall Rally North is a fundraiser for Pediatric Trauma Prevention, and therefore the more people attending means more money will be going toward to a great cause! Please contact your club president for more information!

Fall Rally North

What’s better than having a meeting with D12E Key Clubbers? Having a meeting AND service project! This was our first time hosting a service event after a meeting. Although we had several Key Clubbers, we worked like there were dozens of volunteers. Throughout the whole event, we all helped separate canned goods for the food pantry. August DCM was filled with endless fun and service! See you at the next DCM!

Luis is one of the most dedicated Seniors in the San Jose High Key Club. He is Project Director and was chosen as member of the month due to his long hours of service and his ability to not give up even while facing the biggest of problems. I can count on him to be there when I need him to do his job and beyond that! From finding service projects, building excitement and in just being there, Luis has been extraordinary!

DING DONG. TRICK-O-Treat. Oh man, it’s that time of the year again, where teenagers bring out our childish inner self as we dress up in scary costumes and desire for candies. However this Halloween will be different than any other that you had. Instead of just collecting sweets, we’re gathering money for the ELIMINATE project. From a penny to a dollar, any amount that you collect will not only sweeten your night but also the lives of many.

Kiwanis and UNICEF join forces to organize ELIMINATE project, which raise money to help vaccinate 100 million mothers and babies all around the world from the deadly maternal and neonatal tetanus.

Please contact your club president if you’re interested in fighting together to ELIMINATE maternal and neonatal tetanus.

Abdullah Aslam, a member of Irivington High Key Club, consistently participates in all of our service events and signs up for shifts he is not even required to take as a member. He is a member who is dedicated and helpful to our club. A super friendly sophomore, Abdullah will help key club become well-known to his peers. Although shy, we hope key club can bring him something special and that he can do the same for our club. Submitted by Vivian Nguyen, President of Irvington
