Change of Command

Dragon Report Page 2

On 11 July, 2013, Delta

Detachment proudly re-

ceived Captain Burgett

as Commander. There

was a terrific ceremony

held in Baumholder. The

Change Of Command

Ceremony is a time hon-

ored tradition that dates

back to the days of Knight-

hood.

In those days, when the art of war was both bru-

tal and personal, the battlefield leaders were dis-

tinguished by special flags or pennants – known

as “COLORS”. As battles raged and leaders fell,

the passing of colors became a method for pass-

ing on the succeeding designation of the battle-

field leaders.

GORDO LAYS INTO MEXICAN STYLE CORN ON THE COB

Once again, SFC Victa put

together an outstanding BBQ

for the Soldiers and family of

D-Det 106th FMSU. There

were delicious bbq ribs, hot

dogs, chicken, corn,

cake...everything you can think

of for a fun day in the sun with

the Unit. Everyone brought

something, and everyone who

came enjoyed an afternoon of

togetherness and full bellies.

Family Readiness

Dragon Report Page 4

This month, SSG McKay

went to KMCC to speak to

incoming Soldiers and their

families of Charlie, 5-7 ADA

about the entitlements they

can expect to receive. Mov-

ing to a foreign country can

cause feelings of displace-

ment and when a spouse then

deploys, it is important to

know who and what one’s re-

sources are. SSG McKay

was able to provide incoming

Service Members and their

families with valuable tools

and information on what they

will receive while overseas,

and where to have further

questions answered.

249 RANGE

Dragon Report Page 5

This month, Delta Detach-

ment hit the 249 Range on a

wet Thursday. There was a

great feeling of excitement as

we prepared to fire our weap-

ons. We learned how to load

and fire our 249s, and took

aim at our targets. It was good

training to prepare us for future

missions when needed.

Dragon Report Page 7

While July is always known as the month to celebrate America’s Independence, there are

many other historical events that happened in the month of July. Each event has significantly

shaped America into what it is today, and so to remind ourselves of where we came from and

the efforts and ideas it took to get us here, here are some historical events that took place in the

month of July. I think we need some more holidays!!

July 1, 1862— President Abraham Lincoln signed the first income tax bill, levying a 3% income tax on annual

incomes of $600-$10,000 and a 5% tax on incomes over $10,000. Also, on this day, the Bureau of Internal

Revenue was established by an Act of Congress

July 1, 1863– Beginning of the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War.

July 1, 1776– the Continental Congress in Philadelphia adopted the following resolution, originally introduced

on June 7. “...that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States…”

July 2, 1964– Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibiting discrimination on the basis

of race in public accommodations, publicly owned or operated facilities, employment and union membership

and in voter registration.

July 4, 1776- The Declaration of Independence was approved.

July12, 1817- Henry David Thoreau was born in Massachusetts. He wrote, “I frequently tramped eight or ten

miles through the deepest snow to keep an appointment with a beech tree, or a yellow birch, or an old ac-

quaintance among the pines.”

July 16, 1969– the Apollo 11 Lunar landing mission began with a liftoff from Kennedy Space Center at 9:37

a.m.

July 18, 1918—Nelson Mandela was born at Qunu, in South Africa. A symbol of hope to South Africa’s non

white majority, he was elected President of South Africa after 28 years in prison. It was the first election in

which all races participated.

July 19, 1848—Women’s rights convention was held at Seneca Falls, NY, marking the beginning of an organ-

ized women’s rights movement in the U.S.

July 27, 1953—The Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice by U.S.

and North Korean delegates at Panmunjom, Korea. The war had lasted over

three years.

SHARP TRAINING

CPT GARVIN INITIATES GROUP DISCUSSION DURING SHARP TRAINING

As the Army holds true to

their stance against sexual

harassment and assault, they

have held numerous SHARP

trainings, as well as provided

kiosks and publications on

how to prevent and what to do

if you are sexually assaulted.

Committed to stopping sexual

harassment and assault, Delta Detachment took our training very seriously as

we listened to the stories of others, and came up with ideas on prevention

within our Unit.

COMPLETING THE MISSION

This month, we have many Soldiers who have been tasked out or have volun-

teered to go on different missions, which have separated them from their families

for extended periods of time. We would like to acknowledge and appreciate their

dedication to the Finance Mission, as they unselfishly go out in support of Finance.
