DULWICH COLLEGE SHANGHAI Newsletter Whole School Diary Dates Dear Parents, I would like to express my sincere thanks to those of you that responded to my email last Friday and came to the College to support our U19 Boys Rugby team in the final of the ACAMIS trophy. Unfortunately, the boys narrowly missed out on victory but they all made us feel immensely proud of them for the combination of courage and sportsmanship that they displayed in every game that they played. I have been honoured and privileged to have been interviewing applicants for our Head Girl and Head Boy posts this week and have been left in awe of the talent that our students possess. Every candidate deserves to be commended for their excellent candidature and It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Sonalika Jain to the post of Head Girl and William Yang to the post of Head Boy. I look forward to working with them both over the year ahead. Mr. Nicholas BottingHead of Senior School

The children in Year 1 and 2 have been enjoying their activity time on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I spent the afternoon this week in clay club where the children were working hard to make piggy banks – it all looked very complicated but they were concentrating hard and I am sure they are going to look wonderful! Next week is the final week of activities and then this time will be used for concert rehearsals and Christmas activities.

Year 1 and 2 ConcertThe children are busy rehearsing for their concert which takes place on Wednesday, 23rd and Thursday, 24th November at 10.00am in the DCS Theatre. I am sure many of their mums and dads already know the words too from all the singing they seem to be doing! Next week you will receive a letter asking you to choose which day you would like to attend. Two tickets are allocated to each child, and then additional tickets are given on a first come first served basis. It will be a wonderful event!

Carols by CandlelightChildren in Nursery and Reception will be taking part in Carols by Candlelight on Tuesday, 6th December at 5.00pm in the DUCKS playground. No tickets are needed – the more the merrier! There will be a few chairs but mostly parents tend to stand around and sing along. In the event of rain it will take place in the DUCKS hall.

Winter FairThe winter fair will be taking place on Saturday, 3rd December. This is an amazing event with lots of things to do for all of the family. If you have not already done so please do sign up with your child’s class representative to help on the day.

Have a lovely weekend.

Junior School Charity DayThe Junior School Charity Day is on Wednesday, 9th November. We will be supporting both of our charities: For more details please click here.

Competition time!As many of you are aware, we have many parent helpers as well as many other visitors in the Junior school who deserve a big ‘thank you’ for putting in the extra hours and time to support us in our learning and to help us with our daily school events. We would like to invite the children to enter a competition for designing an attractive THANK YOU card and to think of lots of creative ways in which to say ‘thank you’ in a card design.A first prize, second prize and a third prize winner for the competition will be selected and all three designs will be printed onto a special Dulwich College Shanghai, Junior School designed card.Entries should be completed on A4 paper, in any media and submitted to the Junior School art room by 30th November.

Artwork specifications are as follows:• Type of Art: painting, sketch, paper cutting or computer –aided drawings (2 dimensional work).• A4 sized paper• Artists full name and age should be neatly written on the back of the work.• The original artwork should be submitted to the Junior art room before 30th November 2011.

Good Luck!

Junior School LeadershipIn Junior School this week we held a ‘Leadership’ training morning for our School Captains. We spent the morning looking at the roles and responsibilities of our School Captains. We then explored different definitions of leadership and how they might differ from managers. It was a very successful morning and demonstrated what great leaders of the future we have in Junior School!

Interviews for Head Boy and Head Girl took place on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. The eight short-listed candidates spoke with insight, confidence and enthusiasm about their plans for the role if chosen, leaving the five-strong panel with the headache of making their final selections. In all there were over 80 candidates for the 20 prefect positions and regardless of the final outcomes I would like to thank all of the applicants and encourage them to continue in their aspirations to make a positive difference here at DCS.

IGCSE, IB & Beyond Evening - 7.00pm Thursday, 10th November The purpose of the evening is to explore the links between subject choices at the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and University programmes. Making the right subject choices in essential and the Uni-versity Careers Guidance Counsellors will begin to explore how possible careers and University Programmes must be explored before your son/daughter concludes their option choices. Although this event is mainly aimed at parents and students in Year 9-11, we openly invite all parents

to attend from the Junior and Senior School. If you are keen to attend, please RSVP to [email protected] stating how many people will be attending. We look forward to seeing many of you, with your son/daughter at this event which will be held in the Mei Lan Fang Theatre.

Sports DayWell done to Howard house for its narrow victory in the 2011 Dulwich College sports day. The day was a huge success and a special thanks must go to the students, staff and parents who made the event such a special day.
