2017 ‘Top Ten’ Trial

Purpose – to identify and test the best GEM releases from Raleigh and Ames on modern elite testers, and estimate general combining ability.

Companies agreed to devote in-kind support to topcrossing these lines on proprietary testers in winter 2016, and will test them within their own networks in 2017

Pathology Trials 2016

NLB, SLB (USDA-ARS-PSRU, Raleigh, NC)

Aflatoxin (USDA-ARS CHPRRU, MS State)

NLB and Headsmut (DuPont/Pioneer Hi-Bred)

NLB, GLS, and Goss’s Wilt (Professional Seed Research)

Allelic Diversity(AD) and Double Haploids (DH) Update 2016

204 BGEM DH lines were jointly released in 2014 with Iowa State University’s Doubled Haploid (DH) Facility, representing ~52 races

22 sets of these lines have been distributed to date, plus numerous selections

278 rows of DH1 lines were increased to DH2

109 DH0 lines were increased to DH1

33 Haploid lines were treated by the ISU DH Facility for doubling

222 New BC1’s from Raleigh were selfed, and also grown in the induction iso to generate new haploids

6,617 nursery rows and 730 isolation block rows at Ames; 5,645 nursery rows were for pollination

MBS Genetics contributed 2,516 female isolation rows

Program thoughts and goals

• Increase generation of breeding crosses, via collaboration with Raleigh and cooperators

• Increase Ames testing program and corresponding nursery capacity• Improve utilization of available analytical tools • Reduce cycle time• Seek additional winter nursery options geographically• Expand disease screening efforts, especially with international

cooperators• Longer term, explore genetic solutions to more rapidly adapt unadapted

breeding crosses
