Debra Pearlman’s Children

Joe Pietsch

From Boston to Brooklyn

The Birth of “Pacifier”

Process

The artist works with

existing images. These

images, on their own,

invoke feelings such as

fear, sympathy, anxiety

and a sense of childhood

and innocence lost

Materialize

The artist seeks out

materials as a means to

shield the subject,

protect it from harm, or

mask any underlying

emotion. The result can

bring both positive and

negative feelings.

The image is then transformed, manipulated…using raw materials that provide

texture and depth

By incorporating different textures to the same photo, the artist will find

something new in each image

Double Vision

The artist tends

to reproduce

images and lends

this technique to

a personal

affectation

“Double Cry”

Using the same

image and the same

media (glass) the

artist can create a

second, totally

different experience

from the first.

Another technique relies not only on

the image itself, but the projection of

that image.

House of Children

The artist captures innocence

with her camera

“Anniversary”

By using an

otherwise benign

image, the artist can

create something

that evokes a totally

different feeling than

what was originally

captured

Where is your eye drawn to first…the knife or the child’s eyes?

The quest continues…

*Influences?

*New materials?

*Future of graphic arts?

*Future of the arts in education?
