D-DayBackground Information

• Operation Overlord

• Led by Dwight D. Eisenhower

• Massive deception by Allies

• Planned Beaches to hit:

• Utah

• Sword

• Omaha

• Gold

• Juno

The Invasion• Began on June 6 after weather

delay

• More than 150,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches

• By June 11, all beaches had been secured

• Estimated that nearly 4000 Allied troops were killed, 2000 of which were Americans at Omaha

The Aftermath of D-Day

• Allies began to push across France into Normandy

• Paris was liberated in August 1944

• Allies accepted Axis surrender on May 8, 1944
