Uncommon Solutions for Common Problems
The My Shelter Foundation is a non-stock non-profit organization that aims to create a
system of sustainability and replicability through its capability-building and employment generating
projects. My Shelter empowers its beneficiaries and uses their energies as the greatest force for their
upliftment.
![Page 2: D at e ppt 2010a](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051411/547a59acb4af9fa0158b4ad7/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
One of the My Shelter Foundation’s goals is to find innovative solutions to
fight climate change through sustainable, eco-friendly, low-cost, disaster-resistant
structures.
![Page 3: D at e ppt 2010a](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051411/547a59acb4af9fa0158b4ad7/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
With this goal in mind, we have developed a program that will:
• Create an eco-friendly, sustainable, disaster resistant community for the urban poor
• Proactively help in lowering the country’s carbon footprint by creating a community which uses less energy through green architecture

BACKGROUNDTHE POOR ARE
THE MOST VULNERABLE
In the Philippines:
• 1.25 million families
live in informal settlements
• 20% of these families
live in danger zones
• Housing need is estimated to reach 3.75 million units by 2010*
*According to the Medium Term Philippine Development Plan 2004-2010
![Page 5: D at e ppt 2010a](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051411/547a59acb4af9fa0158b4ad7/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
BACKGROUND
THE POOR ARE AT THE
FOREFRONT OF RISK
The Philippines: • Among the most disaster prone countries in the world• Increase in frequency & intensity of tropical cyclones

• In 6 hours, brought 341.3 mL of rainfall causing floods and landslides (more rainfall than Katrina)
• $237M total damages, $93M infrastructure damages
• Resulted in 464 deaths and misplaced hundreds of families

What will My Shelter Foundation do for 2010?
![Page 22: D at e ppt 2010a](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051411/547a59acb4af9fa0158b4ad7/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
a design competition for sustainable,
disaster-resilient, affordable housing
for the urban poor that can be built in the tropics
Urban Design Challenge2010
![Page 23: D at e ppt 2010a](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051411/547a59acb4af9fa0158b4ad7/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
To bring together architects around the world to find solutions to the problem of obsolete shelter and community designs in the developing world
that are at the forefront of climate change reinforced natural disasters through
architectural and structural resiliency against strong typhoon winds and heavy rains.
THE VISION
![Page 24: D at e ppt 2010a](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051411/547a59acb4af9fa0158b4ad7/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Winning design will be used to construct housing wherein 250 teachers and their families devastated by Ketsana will be
relocated.
THE GOAL
![Page 25: D at e ppt 2010a](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051411/547a59acb4af9fa0158b4ad7/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
to foster local and global awareness on Climate Adaptability and its relevance to poverty alleviation
main hypothesis of this project is that having safer structures "ahead of time" will not only lead to less injury, number of climate refugees, and loss of life and property, but will empower communities to uplift their quality of life.
OBJECTIVES
![Page 26: D at e ppt 2010a](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051411/547a59acb4af9fa0158b4ad7/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
to build the first green, affordable, disaster-resistant village in the Philippines
that could serve as the blueprint of how families in vulnerable areas can successfully cope with the impacts of climate variability.
OBJECTIVES
![Page 27: D at e ppt 2010a](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051411/547a59acb4af9fa0158b4ad7/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
to build an Encyclopedia of climate-resilient, affordable design solutions
that can be used and repeatedly referred to in the near future, and that could help facilitate the development of policies that address these humanitarian challenges.
OBJECTIVES
![Page 28: D at e ppt 2010a](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051411/547a59acb4af9fa0158b4ad7/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)

Design Task:• Building typhoon-resistant housing is only one part of the solution.
To be fully adaptable to climate change, communities should be ready and equipped to survive through anticipated typhoons by becoming self-reliant and having the necessary facilities for post-disaster support.
• Develop a master plan for a village of 250 housing units that can be applied to other similar urban sites.
![Page 35: D at e ppt 2010a](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051411/547a59acb4af9fa0158b4ad7/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Design Task:• Integrate development that addresses the sustainability of the
community by understanding the local demographic, economic, social, and environmental attributes.
• Propose a design theme for the entire village to achieve a unified look, that can be applied to all structures within the community.
• Provide a detailed design for a typical housing unit, including
interior space planning.
![Page 36: D at e ppt 2010a](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051411/547a59acb4af9fa0158b4ad7/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
Sustainability Sustainability of the Built Environment.
The design should incorporate green building strategies for
both community infrastructure and in housing. At a minimum, the design should include the following
considerations:
– Manage solar heat and natural light – Utilize natural ventilation – Water efficiency– Energy efficiency– Waste management and minimization – Life-cycle of building – Use of locally available materials– Use of rapidly renewable materials
