First, thanks to Italy, which as a traditionally cultural and exhibition power, found the courage and strength to organize the World Exhibition even at a time when this world has problems other than to display science and art. Therefore, arranging for a place where all countries of the world could meet and fi nd mutual inspiration in the best way can off er each other is very important for the whole planet.

It would be of no use to remind everyone what Italy has given to the world in the past two thousand years. But I would like to remind what extraordinary relations exist especially between its northern region and the Czech Republic. The lion in the national emblem of the Czech Republic originated in Milano. Charles IV, father of the country and the most important Czech king and Roman Emperor, returned to his homeland form Lombardy. Italian painter Arcimboldo painted the legendary portrait, which became

an inspiration for the EXPO 2015 mascot, for another king and emperor living in Prague, Rudolf II.

A second thanks therefore belongs to organizers of EXPO 2015 who have chosen the powerful theme for the exhibition under the motto „Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life“ and invited participants to revive

the original meaning of the World Exhibitions- to present discoveries and innovations. Only a strong theme and strong expositions may give signifi cance to EXPO also at the same time when the world is interconnected through internet media, but concurrently at the time when people are still looking for those galleries, theatres and concert halls which intellectually enrich them. The Czech Pavilion is the proof of that- the latest discoveries and inventions are presented in the form of contemporary art.

And thanks for a third time. Thanks to those Czech scientists, companies and authors whose work is benefi cial for people all over the world. And not just for them. A visitor of the Czech Republic‘s exposition will experience a wonderful journey from a water molecule through genetic codes of plants and animal and human cells to the largest cell being our planet. But why should we speak about something that you have to see? Our pavilion, including the restaurants and the lake, are at your service.

The Czech National Pavilion at the Expo 2015 in Milan is a modular construction built by Vizovice company KOMA MODULAR based on architectural plans by studio Chybik + Krystof Associated Architects. The ground fl oor of the pavilion features a showpiece of the company Nafi gate done by Lukas Rittstein. In addition, the roof is crowned by a showpiece of ZOO Praha by Jakub Nepras. LABORATORY OF SILENCE –MULTIMEDIA SITE The Laboratory of Silence brings out the atmosphere of the Czech forests. At the same time, it uncovers the secret world of plants all the way to their cellular structure due to the utilization of modern technology. At certain designated spots, in a quiet setting, the visitor can see the details of the world of plants. This is all possible thanks to multimedia microscopic systems connected to a projection screen. This unique project of CVUT students came to life with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. THE LAND OF STORIES AND FANTASY – NATIONAL EXPOSITION This is a show of partner regions and co-exhibitors whose expositions will be rotating every two weeks. Visitors of the Czech Pavilion will

be introduced to the best that tourism, spa industry, and regional foods can off er. The most interesting places of all Czech Regions will be presented through an interactive exposition by CzechTourism agency. However, some regions will display their own expositions such as South Moravia, Karlovy Vary, Plzen, Usti, Moravia-Silesia and Vysocina. In the summer months, the Czech Pavilion is dedicating its exposition to weekly themes of Science, Water and Design. LABORATORY OF LIFE The central part of this exposition is dominated by several pieces of art. One of them is a kinetic sculpture made by Maxim Velovsky. This sculp-ture is made of fi berglass from the company Lasvit. Further, there are re-liefs of wheat and banana tree codes from the Institute of Experimental Botany by Federic Diaz; projections of healthy and diseased cells from the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry from Jakub Nepras‘ collection; and also an animal sculpture by Lukas Rittstein depicting the work of the company BIOVETA. The Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry will introduce its simulated laboratory for developing new medication. The laboratory is authored by Jonas Strouhal.

The city of a thousand spires is a mysterious labyrinth where history blends with today. It‘s a magical pla-ce where the most infl uential men of Europe have met – sovereigns, commanders, alchemists, Jewish scholars...

And precisely in this city, Rabbi Low brought the clay Golem to life. In the past, alchemists tried to produce a philosopher‘s stone in their melting pots at the Court of Emperor Rudolf II. Franz Kafka wrote his dark and depressing works here. Smetana, Dvorak,

and Mozart and Liszt played to excited audiences and received great ovations. Church reformer Jan Hus preacher here, Kopernik, Kepler, Galilei, Giordano Bruno and Tycho de Brahe observed the sky through their astronomical telescopes here...Walking here today means to be a part of all magic and mysteries of the past. Prague has simply an at-mosphere which cannot be off ered by any other city in the world. An enumeration of monuments, muse-ums and galleries, wonderful places and buildings even in its most

concise form exceeds the volume of this book. It is necessary

Prague –Mysterious Mother of Cities

of it for at least a moment – and then it may reveal some of its secrets to you as well.

There have not been so many ar-ticles written and stories told about any other Czech city or town as Pra-gue, the metropolis of the country. Standing on the Charles Bridge, one of the most beautiful stone bridges in the world, and looking through silhouettes of silent statues across the Lesser Quarter full of curved streets and charming squares uphill where the Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral shine – it is an experience which will not become a routine even for those who have lived here for their whole life. You will fi nd here the time-honoured Vysehrad dominating the Vltava river and its 17 bridges which is the silver

pulsating artery of the city, the Old Town with its famous astronomical clock and Wenceslas Square, the true heart of the Czech Republic, the place which the Czechs have always run to at the turning points of Czech history in order to express their will in front of the statue of St. Wenceslas, patron of the Czech nation. You will fi nd here the jewels of modern architecture from cubism to functionalism to the Dancing House.

The islands of the Vltava river are an oasis of peace within the vibrant metro-polis. as the famous Charnel-house with altars, chandeliers, coats of arms and pyramids made of bones and plague epidemic victims. Or Litomysl (2), a renaissance jewel completely fi lled with music. The white pearl set in a renaissance necklace surrounding a delicate palace wearing a chic jacket made of sgrafi tto, with a surprising square surrounded by picturesque arcades of burgher houses. This is a town which is also world renowned for hosting the

opera festival Smetana Litomysl. Another of Prague‘s

proud daughters is Kromeriz (3), a town full of gardens and parks surrounding

If Prague is the mother of cities, its children give her credit. For instance, Kutna hora (1) is a city full of cathedrals, monasteries, and patrician houses, arched cellars, jewels of Baroque and Gothic architecture and the art of sculpture, a town with silver mines, royal mint and one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in Europe dedicated to St. Barbara, as well

the noble Archbishop Palace that hosts a picture gallery full of masterpieces of the world‘s paintings. It is simply wonderful to walk in the English park of the Pozdamecka garden of Kvetna garden – its perfect symmetry and sophisticated pictures made of fl owers, garden beds and hedges of the uniquely preserved system of the French garden will take your breath away.

Another gem in the necklace decorating the neck of the mother Prague is Telc (4). It is a town built for artists and dreamers, a town which has a sort of Italian style –fragile and adorable. There is a nice looking square surrounded by decorated facades of Gothic and Renaissance houses, fi ligree

sgrafi tto of the palace refl ected in the surface of local ponds, perfect cassette ceiling of palace halls, plain beauty of churches, sunny gardens and friendly nature. Or Trebic (5), with St. Procopius‘ Basilica with monumental rosettes and a unique seven hundred year old arched crypt and Jewish Quarter with over one hundred and twenty houses, Town Hall, School, Rabbi‘s house, Synagogues and large Cemetery with almost three thousand tombstones. Zdar na Sazavou (6) is also a town worth your attention, namely due to the brilliance of Jan Blazej Santini, virtuoso of Baroque-Gothic architecture. The chapel of St. Jan Nepomucky on Green Hill is unbelievably beautiful, light and airy. Simply, it is not a church – it is the most delicate lace. His work also includes the local plague cemetery built in the form of a human skull, stables, pub, hospital and monastery prelacy. Ph

Krumlov (1). The labyrinth of narrow and mystic medieval lanes was built between rocky hillsides on the area having the size of a good-hearted giant‘s palm. The Gothic town of alchemists and stonemasons, conjurers and proud aristocracy crowned by beautiful Renaissance chateau – the second largest after Prague Castle – is full of admirable magic and secrets. Curved lanes lead from the attractive square and their direction is given by the Vltava river which fl ows through the town and its banks are connected with a number of bridges and foot bridges. It is a labyrinth of proud Renaissance and Gothic houses, gloomy monasteries and proud cathedrals

Historical Jewels – Wherever You Look

It is possible that the most beautiful town in Central Europe is Cesky

and it is great to lose your way there because a new surprise or another secret is waiting for you behind every corner. It seems that this town is a dream which changes all the time. And a visitor who is tired from wandering may sit at the turning auditorium of the theatre, visit some galleries or museums or sit on a boat and look at the town form the surface of the river.

One of the dominating symbols of the Czech Republic is Karlstejn (2),a monumental and proud stone castle and showpiece of the Czech Gothic architecture. It towers on a hill close to Prague. It seems that time is sitting on a corner and does not dare to interrupt the movement of history. Palaces and chambers, long spatial corridors, unconquerable walls and strict towers of the castle – and fi rst of all the most precious jewel, Chapel of the Holy Cross with the unique set of one hundred and twenty nine Gothic desk paintings by Master Theodorik. By waving a magic wand you will be from here to another historical epoch, to places where a fairy tale chateau looms out from

the wonderful park with forests and lakes. Konopiste (3), fi lled with the spirit of court etiquette of the beginning of the 20th century, ceremonial uniforms of the Emperor Court, hunters‘ jackets and the fi rst motor cars. The last person who transformed the castle according to his own ideas was Franz Ferdinand D’Este, heir of the Emperor Austro-Hungarian throne. Marvellous hunting collections, armouries, pompous parlours and bedrooms, study room and even the private dining room are fi lled with the spirit of the man whose death in Sarajevo launched World War I. And so it is an enchanting experience to see decorative Baroque churches and modernist trade fair places next to each other (Brno is the most signifi cant trade centre in the Czech Republic), Baroque plague columns, fountains and aristocratic places, Neo-Renaissance monumental theatre and a number of functionalistic jewels including the most precious one – one of the most remarkable villas in the world which was

built according to the design of the world renowned architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Moravian JewelsMoravia, the eastern part of the Czech Republic, is a fruitful and enchanting part of the country. Its metropolis is Brno (1), a true treasury of architecture. One will never feel lost here, in spite of its size, it is an intimate and friendly city. It is dominated by the Gothic Spilberk Castle and Neo-Gothical Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul – although 650 years have lapsed between completion of both

architecture – Villa Tugendhat. Brno is a lively city with colourful street culture and a network of popular coff ee bars and restaurants which fall asleep only when the night is tired.

On the contrary, Olomouc (2) is a respectable thousand year old religious centre of Moravia. Visiting Olomouc is the same as meeting a wise and respectable man with an infi nite amount of experience and his single word is worth man than a library of books. Here you‘ll fi nd impressive cathedrals, charming churches, sumptuous burgher palaces, monumental monasteries. Olomouc is home to a breath taking Bishop‘s palace, the top work of European Roman architecture, Gothic churches and cathedrals, renaissance palaces with lavishly

decorated facades, but fi rst of all – Olomouc‘s Baroque showpieces. Beautiful fountains, Archbishop‘s Palace, Hradisko Monastery called „Moravian Escorial“, Minor Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the Holy Hill and especially- impressive Plague Column, the largest Baroque sculptural group in Central Europe. And to top it all off – an astronomical clock with workers‘ fi gurines dated 1955.

Moravia is also an amazing landscape full of excellent vineyards. Lednice-Valtice area (3), the trails of history remain in vineyards. The majestic Baroque chateau Valtice, decorated chateau Lednice built in the style of Tudor Gothic and surrounded by a set of ponds and river branches, Chinese gazebo, belvederes, bridges, romantic castles, Empire style hunting chateau, scenic colonnade and even a minaret.... And vineyards, wine cellars and excellent Moravian wine is everywhere. Ph

country is actually full of spas, but these three towns are simply the most famous of them. The fi rst rank belongs to Karlovy Vary (1),a charming town situated in the river valley. It is diffi cult to resist a carefree and festive feeling of peaceful promenade between sumptuous facades of lofty houses, between columns of bountifully decorated colonnades. The knowledge that Peter the Great, Maria Terezia, Bach, Goethe, Casanova and Beethoven all drank the same hot healing water from fragile porcelain cups while standing next to Corinthian columns of marvellous Mlynska colonnade, uplifts you and provides once-in--a-lifetime dimensions for a walk

Liquid Gifts – of the Czech Lands

The so-called Spa Triangle is the showpiece of the western part of the Czech Republic. The whole

All spa towns, as centres of active social life, grew into more and more beautiful towns and today we can admire cute shiny buildings in Frantiskovy Lazne (2), whichalmost look like fi gures on a wedding cake made by a confectioner‘s hand, and we can concurrently strengthen our health at the local and oldest peat spa in the world. You will be similarly enchanted by respectable peace in elegant classical pavilions in Marianske Lazne (3), especially when you know that forty healing springs are available in a small territory of the town and you will fi nd sixty other springs in the close vicinity.

For Czechs and the whole world, local famous beer is another liquid treasure. People say that Pilsen beer is the country‘s treasure, but you will fi nd this excellent gold coloured drink with its original taste in every

region of the Czech lands and Moravia. And hardly ever would you end up with beer only, the thing is the Czechs hare also famous eaters. Local cuisine would not probably win a competition in cooking healthy meals, but it is hard to resist. It would be an unforgivable sin to come to Plzen (4) and not visit our local brewery, not to taste the world famous beer Pilsen. It would be the same mistake to not get acquainted with the actual spirit of the town. You can feel it almost everywhere. Pilsen, the European Capital of Culture 2015, has an artistic cheerful spirit and hands it out in fi stfuls. Several important theatres, local philharmonic orchestras, galleries, cultural coff ee bars, a number of musical theatres and folk festivals and all that is supplemented by live street art. Ph
