Remember:
Each of our parents contribute to 1/2 of our
genetic make-up. PCOS may be inherited, but
other factors can impact development/symptoms.
PCOS: Patterns of Inheritance
KEY:
no PCOS
PCOS visible
1. Let's say this is you - and you marry a man with no apparent
symptoms, or history of, PCOS.
2a. Your PCOS daughter marries a man
with no symptoms, or family history of,
PCOS.
3a. They have 2 children - 1 boy, 1 girl.
The daughter does not display
symptoms of PCOS, but the boy does. He
marries a woman with no symptoms of,
or family history of, PCOS.
4a. The non-PCOS daughter marries a
man with no symptoms of, or family
history of, PCOS.
5. One of their children has outward
symptoms of PCOS. How? It's in their
DNA.
2b. Your PCOS son marries a woman
with no symptoms, or family history of,
PCOS and they have 2 children - 1 boy
and 1 girl. The son has prominent
symptoms of PCOS.
3b. Your son marries a woman with a
strong family history of PCOS.
4b. They have 2 children - 1 boy and 1
girl. Both are impacted by PCOS.
Wait! PCOS can affect men? You bet!
Keep reading to find out how.

UNDERSTANDING HEREDITY USING A PUNNET SQUARE
You've seen how PCOS can be passed from parent to child. But do you
really understand how one child can display symptoms and one child
not display symptoms?
Remember high school biology? We're going to use a Punnet Square to
help break things down a little more.
REMEMBER:
Each ofus is a
combination of the
DNA that our parents
pass on to us. After an
egg is fertilized, DNA
begins to split and
replicate. The person
we become is (almost)
completely dependent
on the information
contained in those
copied chromosomes!
We'll talk about
factors that can
influence heredity in a
future issue, but right
now the important
concepts for you to
understand are:
PCOS is genetic
PCOS can be passed
frommotherorfather
PCOS can impact any
child - regardless of
sex!
