DESCRIPTION

CV update Fall 2015I am a fourth year PhD Candidate in the Department of English, specializing in American Literature, and completing a Graduate Certificate in Women’s and Gender Studies. I hold degrees in rhetoric and composition (MA) and philosophy with a minor in creative writing (BA) from Southern Illinois University. I also hold a degree in nursing and worked for over ten years as a Registered Professional Nurse, specializing in critical care oncology, prior to attending the University of South Carolina. My dissertation project combines my interests in trauma studies, animal studies, and childhood studies as I work to develop a postanthropocentric theory of trauma. I am also conducting research for a performance studies project titled, “Performing (Canine) Soldier.” This grant-supported project investigates the intersection of public memory, gender narratives, and contemporary commendation trends regarding military working dogs and handlers. In addition to my research, I am a Teaching Fellow in the university's Social Advocacy and Ethical Life Initiative. In this capacity, I teach courses that consist of the following components: research and argumentation, oral communication, performance, the ethics (and ethical forms) of advocacy, ethical theory, critical inquiry, and collaborative and digital literacies. I have also taught courses in advanced writing with emphasis on performative writing, public speaking, first-year composition, research and argumentation, and basic writing. I hold a master's degree in rhetoric and composition, specializing in composition pedagogy.Alongside my academic work, I am drafting my first novel. Nightlytes: The Education of Arlind Ruel is book one in a new series of speculative fiction novels that follow the galactic adventures of protagonist, Arlind Ruel and her dog Brahki.
