This spring’s trip by the Retirement Association to the historic B-Reactor at Hanford was absolutely amazing. I’m sorry for those who wanted to attend but were unable. Many – most? – of us are familiar with the history of World War II and the Cold War, but to see up close the installation which was at the heart of much of it, not to mention being the world’s first industrial scale nuclear reactor, one of the seminal events in the history of science, made for an unforgettable experience. The reactor, inactive since 1968 and now listed as a National Historic Landmark, has been maintained and developed for the public by volunteers from among former employees who actually worked in the facility. In a large work area which resembled a large theater with a giant proscenium opening featuring the reactor on stage, as it were, we sat directly in front of the face of the reactor. Here we were shown videos of the history of the facility and of nuclear science since Enrico Fermi’s famously achieved the first sustained chain reaction in 1942 under the stadium at the University of Chicago; were led through the hurried wartime development of the Manhattan Project in the sparsely populated land in southeastern Washington; and treated to understandable (well, more or less so) explanations of the otherwise arcane science of nuclear physics. A walking tour of the facility took us through various areas designed to exhaust potentially hazardous air, bring in cooling water from the Columbia River, provide emergency shutdown in the event of failure, and control critical aspects of the reactor. The docents brought to life a previously hidden, yet incredibly important, aspect of the Twentieth Century from World War II through the Cold War. In spite of the rain which accompanied us on the way down, it was a most rewarding trip. We started the year with our annual golf “classic,” continued with Attorney Jeff Winter’s fall discussion of legal issues for seniors, and then in the winter Warren Street’s presentation on modern life in the Basque area of Spain; and we now in the spring, Hanford. On May 16 we will finish the year with our annual dinner meeting at Rodeo City Bar-B-Q and after a brief business meeting will hear Amy Mumma speak on the now-famous world wine program at CWU. Yes, it’s been quite a year.

Docents explaining the history of the project. Boron rods were inserted and removed from the top and left side in order to control the chain reaction.
