British in India
• Many religions (Hindu, Muslim, Sikh)
• Caste System – rigid separation of classes in India
• Largely crowded, full of resources
British East India Company
• Set up trading posts in India in 1600
• Exported resources(cotton)
• Mughal Empire fell, EIC took control of India
• Goal was to makemoney, not culturally sensitive
Sepoy Rebellion
• EIC used Indians called Sepoys to fill their army
• Insulted them culturally, they rebelled
• Left legacy of fear, hatred and mistrust
• From this point on, the sides hated eachother, British government took more control
India under British Rule
• Governed by the viceroy, queens rep in India
• British exploited India, largescale deforestation
• Upper class benefited from British rule, lower class didn’t.
More British Rule
• Victoria: “India is the crown jewel of Empire”
• Made Indians servants to the British
• Constant racism
Indian Nationalism
• Indian National Congress formed in 1885, push for independence, Muslim League in 1906
• Hated being 2nd class
• Movement was split between Muslim and Hindu, took long time
• Mohandas Gandhi will unite the sides
