African-American Labor

• Thousands of blacks worked in factories and mines across the country

• Many blacks were barred from the labor unions• Knights of Labor were first to allow blacks in the union• With the support of some unions, blacks across the country

negotiated with businesses and even strike on occasion.

Black Professionals• Black doctors were

discriminated against, they couldn’t work in white hospitals and black patients were segregated from the whites.

• Soon black colleges started medical degree programs to create doctors to serve the black community in black hospitals.

• Basically the same conditions and narrative go with black lawyers.

Sports

• Boxing was most popular sport in America

• Jack Johnson became heavyweight champion and people were offended, they waited for the “great white hope” to defeat him

• When baseball became the first professional sport, blacks were included, but then pushed out, they form their own league, the Negro League.

• White colleges would not allow black students to compete in sports, the black colleges started their own leagues as a result.
