Elderly and disabled people in North-West Kent are set to benefit from a van donated by electricity company UK Power Networks.

The company, which distributes power to the East of England, London and the South-East, including Kent, has handed over a Peugeot van to CVSNWK.

Marilyn Keating said: “I was so pleased to hear that not only were UK Power Networks willing to help us by locating a suitable vehicle that they no longer needed but they were also donating it to us with tax and MoT.

“It is so good to know that there are businesses out there that do

want to help and be involved with the community – so a big thank-you from us.”

The organisation’s Linked Services Project aims to help elderly and disabled people to stay in their own homes within their communities and live as independently as possible. There is a Home Support Scheme, running for 20 years, which helps them do this.

One of the services run in the project is a Handyman and Gardening scheme. The van will be used by the Handyman/Gardener, who had been using his own vehicle.

Chris Pascall, UK Power Networks’ head of transport,

said: “We are only too pleased to help out the charity and the people of Kent in this way.

“We use our vehicles to their maximum potential and when we no longer need them we usually sell them on. But when we heard about the CVSNWK’s need for some wheels for their Handyman/Gardener, we were delighted to step in. We even got it taxed and MoT’d for them before handing it over.”

One of the company’s aims is to be a “respected corporate citizen” serving the communities in its distribution area.

Employment & Training Forum

The initial Forum was a great success attended by over 35 people and the next one is already booked for 1st October 2013 at 10am at the Veterans Club, The Hill, Northfleet (lunch supplied)

CVSNWK wanted to resurrect the Employment & Training Forum that used to take place monthly at the Civic Centre in Gravesend. This forum was a great platform for sharing who was offering what training. This enabled the groups who attended to be pro-active and try to limit duplication.

The other side of this sharing platform was what training others were looking for - this gave groups, and the voluntary sector, a great insight on what they could access - not only for staff and volunteers, but also from the service users they were looking after. It enabled them to access free, subsidised and paid for training within, and mainly supplied by, the voluntary sector; therefore they could spend more time (which is always money) on further support, guidance and coaching of service users - with the main aim once all learning barriers are broken down - into employment or a voluntary position that empowers them as individuals and grows their confidence and social skills.

The purpose of the resurrection is to create a calendar of learning of all training courses available throughout the area listed in one place. This will be accessible by all members of the forum from direct website links, enabling networking between training providers and learning support workers. This will cut down on duplication and thus enhance the services being delivered, offering more informed choice of training and job coaching.

This also helps to assess demand for training topics and skills required for work.

The forum will offer a joined up approach to Training & Employment via a centralized resource. The foresight of enabling this forum to be reborn will be reflected over time, as we aim to encourage local people who want to upskill and put into practice what they have learnt; be it by employment or volunteering within their community and other initiatives.

This offers the learner and training support team the choice from one direct source, enabling access to training throughout the year.

All previous attendees will be invited, with an additional open invite to anyone that they feel may wish to be part of and support the forum – this will help with its growth and profile raising.

The forum will be liaising with local employers to secure work experience places for learners

It also became apparent from this initial Forum that other things could be done, ie: the sharing of resources (venues), Apprenticeships, Work Placements, Events (Job Fairs/Open Days), Volunteering Opportunities etc. Support and Training was also available for people working with people with learning disabilities, mental health and parents to name a few. CVS could set up a page on its website for the Forum where all of the above could be listed along with the Training Calendar.

If you are interested in joining this Forum or would like more details please either telephone Gemma at the office on 01474 354479 or email: [email protected]

Kent Charities Survey Big Society Co-operative aims to support and enable the civil society sectors by making voluntary, community, social enterprise and SME organisations more sustainable. As part of this, they want to ensure that charities in Kent are able to access support that is efficient, self-sustaining and fit for purpose.

To help them do this, they would appreciate it if your organisation could spend 10 minutes participating in a short online survey about the support you receive currently and the support you would ideally like to see provided in the future.

Temple Hill Trust has been working for the residents of the Temple Hill Estate since 1996; constantly striving to improve the environment and the lives of all residents.

The Trust owns and maintains three and a half acres of land on the Temple Hill Estate – “The Enchanted Woodland” - providing a beautiful, peaceful woodland which can be used by everyone.

They also run programmes such as the Forest School, which is an inspirational learning process that offers children regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence through hands-on learning in a woodland environment.

Temple Hill Trust organises a regular quarterly meeting for all organisations who have an interest in Temple Hill called Working Lunch. It provides an arena to discuss and partner with others on various projects.

Plant a Tree and Grow a Memory In the Enchanted Woodland

In honour of your loved one we will plant a beautiful tree, preserving their memory into the future with a growing gift. Your lasting tribute will benefit the community as our children will enjoy its beauty while keeping its significance close to your heart

We plant native species trees, so you will be helping us to enhance the diversity of the woodland – creating a better green space that not only looks good to us but also supports our wildlife.

Please consider buying something special, giving a tree the opportunity to live on into the future which has been supported by your kind donation of £35 per tree.

As part of the projects organised by the Northfleet North Big Local the wall around the old fountain at the Hive in Northfleet was decorated with tiles designed by talented young artists from Northfleet School for Girls.

NNBL organised a Mini Fun Day with a bouncy castle and free barbeque, popcorn and candy floss. Local children were invited to affix the tiles and to take part in the festivities.

A copy of the NNBL Plan was distributed to all the attendees, publicising the work and projects that will be undertaken by NNBL over the next two years.

CVSNWK are the Local Trusted Organisation (LTO) for Northfleet North Big Local and will administer the distribution of the £1m award.

We are pleased to be working with the Northfleet North Big Local community, not only as the LTO, but also in a supportive role to assist with new projects and events where we can and to create new partnerships. We are thoroughly enjoying being part of the changes taking place and to be able to watch this exciting Big Local grow.

First Aid for Families

What does it Cost?

The course is provided free to parents and carers of children under the age of 12 months or who are on benefit. For those who do not meet this criteria the cost is £20 per person. ALL Attendees will be asked to pay a deposit of £20 to secure a place on the course, for those eligible for a free place, this deposit will be refunded after the course.

Why do I need to pay a deposit?

Unfortunately all attendees are asked to pay the deposit, this has been due to the high number of people who have booked vacancies and then failed to turn up, costing the Charity money and depriving others of a place. To reduce the Charities costs, please choose to pay by ‘PayPal’ where possible when making payment at the checkout.

What will you learn?

The course has been designed to cover many of the types of illnesses and injury’s you may come across in the home or whilst out with other members of your family. As well as dealing with First Aid, we will also look at the contents of First Aid Boxes in the Home. The course includes life support practice on adult, child and infant resuscitation manikins as well as general first aid. We will also deal with questions and queries regarding specific illnesses where possible.

Course content:

• Basic Life Saving Skills • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) • Recovery position • Choking • Febrile convulsions • Meningitis • Injury and illness assessment • Wound treatment • Head and eye injuries • Nose bleeds • Allergic reactions • Drowning • Common age specific illnesses & injuries • First Aid Kit

Certification: All participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

Course Location: All of our courses are run at venues that have kindly been donated free of charge to Millies trust to enable these courses to take place.
