    Questions???

a)How did liberal elements gain a footholdin our society and lawmaking bodies?

b)What is our duty as Catholics in politics?c)How can Catholics be empowered to votewith an informed conscience?

One who lives by an immoral

    code of behavior loses the

ability to reason uprightly.Soon after one ends up

denying moral law if only to

justify a behavior that isdifficult to give up.

As more people succumb the easy, comfortable and enjoyable the

clamor for ethical pluralism in the public sphere rises.

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    7/43

    In this very

    LiberalClimate

    Complete autonomy political

    choices from morality becomes

    the political menu. Catholic

    lawmakers are asked to enact

    laws that ignore principles of

natural ethics as if God did not

    exist.

.They will be asked to set

    aside their Christian

understanding of the humanperson and the common good.

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    8/43

    Catholic lawmakers will

    not be able to base

their contribution tosocial and political life

    on their particular

    Christian understanding

    of the human person

    and the common good.

In Temporal matters Catholic politiciansare Free to choose among variouspolitical solutions according to a

Hierarchy ofValues what will bestcorrespond to the needs of the

    common good.

    Temporal Order

    This refers to economic, social,

    administrative and cultural

    areas, which are intended to

    promote organically andinstitutionally the common

    good.

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    Catholic Politicians have the Grave

    and Clear obligation to Oppose

    matters that Violate Natural Moral

    Law

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    12/43

The duty of the lay faithful

is to infuse the social, cultural, economic and

    political life with values

    guided by a Christian

    conscience to promote the

    common good.

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    13/43

    By avoiding dirty politics we

Catholics relinquished the destinyof our country to others.

We left public office to those

motivated by self-interest andgreed or by ideological agenda

inimical to our Christian faith and

    morals.

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    14/43

In a democracy every citizen has the right and duty to

participate in the policy making process at the very least by

voting in elections for lawmakers and government officials.

    Others can participate more

    fully by running

for legislative positionswhich gives them a direct

    involvement in policy

    making, or

for elective governmentpositions where they can

    have a direct hand in

    managing political bodies.

    WHAT DOES CATHOLIC VOTE MEAN?

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    16/43

What the Catholic Vote is not Bloc Voting is against

    the teachings of the

    Church.

    Neither is it acceptable

for Bishops and Prieststo use the pulpit to

    dictate who Catholics

    should vote for.

Democracy must be based on the true and solid foundation

of non-negotiable ethical principles, which are the

    underpinning of life in society.

Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    17/43

    3 Non-Negotiable Ethical Principles

    Pope Benedict XVI:

    Catholics must defend:

    1. The protection of life

at all stages2. The recognition and

promotion of thenatural structure ofthe family as unionbetween man andwoman based onmarriage.

    3. Protection of the

    right of parents toeducate their

    children.

Speech 30, III-2006 to European Parliamentarians.

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    18/43

These 3 non-negotiable ethical principles are at the

peak of the hierarchy of values that Catholics have to

    defend.

These are matters of faith and morals

that cannot be placed at the same

footing as other temporal matters such

as corruption, gun ban, clean elections,

    dynasties, etc.

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    19/43

Wont this be too narrow minded?

    Giving priority to these three

Non-Negotiable EthicalPrinciples before looking at thecandidates stand on other

issues is what makes your vote

    a Catholic Vote.

Dontbe so rigid judging things as black and

white. There is really is nothing that is moreimportant than anything else.

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    20/43

    What if a pro-life

    politician is

    corrupt?

Applying the 3 Non-NegotiableEthical Principle is just the firstlevel criteria.

Catholics are then free to applythe 2nd level criteria based onmore temporal issues which theydeem importantcorruption,

dynasty, etc. Catholics must agree on the 1st

level criteria since this is whatmakes their vote specifically

Catholic. In the 2nd level criteria there isplenty of room of freedom ofchoice.

    HOW DOES RA 10354 STANDWITH

    RESPECTTOTHE 3 NON-NEGOTIABLE

    ETHICAL PRINCIPLES?

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    23/43

RA 10354 includes hormonal contraceptives, intrauterine devices, injectables in the National Drug

Formulary and gives the FDA the function of certifying

that these contraceptives will not be used as

    abortifacient.

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    24/43

RA 10354 promotes artificial contraception which

encourages a marriage that is not open to life and

    facilitates marital infidelity.

We Catholics, who make up the majority, found

ourselves helpless and vulnerable to fight the

    passage of RA 10354.

And our political enemies are now bent on exploiting this

weakness to legalize abortion, divorce, same-sex marriage, etc.

    In the implied

    Negative Criteria are

    Catholics passing

    judgment onCandidates?

There is no intent here to single out

    anybody.

Those who voted for RA 10354 areentitled their opinion as persons.

    The Church unceasingly offers the

    sacrament of reconciliation to

welcome them back to its fold.

But we cannot risk putting in their

    hands the destiny of the

sacredness of life, the sanctity ofmarriage and the right of parents to

    educate their children.

    Is there an implicit

positive criteria in theCatholic Vote Although no particular

candidate will be endorsed,Catholic Vote has a specific

    political goal.

The 16th Congress willattempt to legalize divorce,

    abortion, same sex marriage

    and assisted suicide.

    It is politically imperative that

in the May 2013 election we

    increase in both Houses the

Catholic politicians who willstaunchly defend our 3 non-

    negotiables.

    Out to Get the

    Highest Score?

Election is not a Fill in the

    blanks type exam where one

aims for the highest score byfilling in all the blanks.

If we find only so many

candidates that can meet ourcriteria we dont have to fill up

    the rest with candidates who

do not meet any criteria at all!

    This would be senseless!

  • 7/28/2019 CVP Educ Program v 3

    32/43

Some others think that they should vote for candidates

who have the most chance of winning according to theelection polls.

Climbing the bandwagon of the winning team makes

us the worst losers of all!

    Are we playing

    a game?
