IMSA: Corvette Racing keeps line-ups intact for 2017

P a g e 7 V o l u m e 1 I s s u e 1

Having swept all six GT Le Mans titles in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship in 2016 and winning five times, Corvette Racing confirmed today that its full-season driver roster will remain unchanged for the 2017 racing season. Antonio Garcia, Jan Magnussen, Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner will pilot the two Mobil 1/Sirius XM Chevrolet Corvette C7.R racecars during both the IMSA season and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, pending invitations for the annual French endurance race. This will mark the sixth consecutive year that the full-season lineup features the same four drivers. In their combined Corvette Racing history, they have combined to win 105 races and 10 driver's championships in IMSA competition. Corvette Racing also has amassed 11 class manufacturer and team championships and an IMSA-record 102 race victories. "Consistency is a key component in a successful endurance racing program," said Mark Kent, Chevrolet's Director of Motorsports Competition. "Retaining our core driver line-up for a sixth straight season gives us the best opportunity to repeat the phenomenal results from 2016." The two Corvette C7.Rs will participate at an upcoming preseason test Dec. 13-14 at Daytona Interna-tional Speedway. The team recorded a 1-2 finish in GTLM at last year's Rolex 24 At Daytona with the two cars separated by just 0.034 seconds. Gavin and Milner used that as a springboard to three additional wins and the GTLM driver's title. “It’s great to be coming back and joining Tommy again in the No. 4 Chevrolet Corvette C7.R. It was a great season for us with four victories, a number of podiums and of course sweeping the GTLM championships," said Gavin. “You have a little more spring in your step coming into a new season on the back of one like we had in 2016. You feel confident. I hope that’s the way it carries over into 2017.” Milner added: "Being with Corvette Racing for this many years and having the same core team, I find we

hit the ground running from the first test to the first race, almost as an extension of the previous year.

With the success we had last year, let's hope that translates to a strong start for 2017!

FOX Sports Coverage Of 2017 WeatherTech Championship Highlighted By Expanded Rolex 24 At Daytona

C i t r u s V e t t e s & C a m a r o s C a r C l u b

The 2017 IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship which opens in fewer than 40 days with the 55th Rolex 24 At Daytona is already shaping up to be a classic, with the introduction of brand-new race cars in the flagship Prototype class and a number of new cars and participants in both GT classes. Once again in 2017, FOX Sports will have all of the action from the drop of the green flag in the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 28 through the final checkered flag of the season at Petit Le Mans on Oct. 7, as IMSA and FOX Sports today unveiled the complete television schedule for the series. The 2017 season will open on Saturday, Jan. 28 with a live FOX Network telecast of the first three hours of the 55th Rolex 24 At Daytona. FOX Sports will provide 24 hours of live television coverage of the Rolex 24 across FOX, FS1 and FS2 with only a brief, one-hour window late Saturday evening that will not be televised. The FOX Sports GO app will have 25 consecutive hours of Rolex 24 programming, kicking off live streaming in the U.S. of the entire 12-race WeatherTech Championship season in 2017. The app will simulcast all FOX Sports telecasts in their entirety and will have seven hours of exclusive coverage in 2017. “We worked closely with our partners at FOX Sports to build an extremely strong schedule for WeatherTech Championship telecasts in 2017,” said David Pettit, IMSA vice president, marketing. “Together, we were able to ‘reimagine’ our television schedule to expand our presence on the FOX Network, reduce the number of channel changes during our Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Cup events and utilize the FOX Sports GO platform to provide a consistent platform for our most loyal race fans. We’ve more than doubled the number of hours of live FOX Network coverage over 2016, and are offering more live television coverage of the Rolex 24 At Daytona than we have at any time in recent history. At the same time, both of FOX Sports’ cable networks, FS1 and FS2, have grown substantially, and we are making FOX Sports GO a destination for fans to watch the season in its entirety. In total, it’s a fantastic package to offer our fans and partners.”

Jeff Gordon Enjoys Rolex 24 At Daytona Preparation In ‘Retirement’

P a g e 1 1 V o l u m e 1 I s s u e 1

When NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon announced his retirement, a lot of folks thought he would be done with racing when the 2015 season was over. The truth, however, has proved to be just the opposite. Gordon resumed NASCAR driving duties in numerous fill-in roles for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet throughout the 2016 season. At the beginning of this month, it also was announced that Gordon would return to the Rolex 24 At Daytona, the opening race for the IMSA Weather-Tech Sports Car Championship, after a 10-year hiatus. For the 2017 Rolex 24, Gordon will join Wayne Taylor Racing in the team’s brand new Daytona Prototype international (DPi), the No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V. R, where he will compete alongside Jordan Taylor, Ricky Taylor and Max Angelelli. Gordon turned his first laps in the car at in an IMSA-sanctioned test at Daytona on Tuesday afternoon. “Oh man, that was a lot of fun,” Gordon said after finishing his stint in the car. “I’m thrilled to be here, and to finally get some laps in. It didn’t disappoint. To be able to drive a car that has that kind of downforce, and the kind of braking and cornering it’s capable of, it’s just an amazing piece of machinery.” In 2007, Gordon’s lone previous Rolex 24 experience, he drove alongside Angelelli, Wayne Taylor and Jan Magnussen in a Corvette Daytona Prototype. Despite a few setbacks during the race, the quartet ended up finishing on the overall podium in third. Back then, the DPs were far more similar to a Cup car than the new batch of DPi models are, so Gordon has been meticulous in his preparations.

Jeff Gordon Enjoys Rolex 24 At Daytona Preparation In ‘Retirement’

C i t r u s V e t t e s & C a m a r o s C a r C l u b

“I’ve been working so hard because I want to give these guys everything,” explained Gordon. “I told Wayne years ago, that I wasn’t going to come back to run this again unless I can put in the necessary amount of time and effort. I might be working harder this year than I think I’ve ever worked. “Every lap I’ve made in the car has been helpful, as has the time I spent in the Dallara simulator in Indianapolis that was big. I’ve definitely spent some time getting familiar with the seat, the steering wheel and how the car reacts. I anticipated feeling more comfortable here at Daytona than I did on the Charlotte road course, and that’s exactly what happened.” For much of Tuesday, the team was working through a few software gremlins with the engine. However, once they hit the track, all the drivers were able to get some valuable seat time in on the high banks. Gordon feels there is definitely great room for improvement in setup, but he’s looking to step aside and listen to the experts on that topic. “That’s for Ricky and Jordan and Max,” he said. “I mean, I’m just trying to keep up with those guys. I felt like there were some areas where I could have been more aggressive, but we’ll see." Gordon finds great amusement in some of the reaction to the announcement that he would be returning to the Rolex, as he wasn’t exactly private about his interest in partaking in the race. However, despite alluding to it on numerous occasions, much of the surprise makes him feel that not everyone took him seriously on the matter. He’s looking forward to showing everyone just how serious he actually was by chasing a win in the twice-around-the-clock enduro. “At this point in my life and career, that would be huge,” Gordon said. “I think you really realize how important this race is when you’re here on race day and you see the hype and the buildup and it doesn’t disappoint. The challenges that you face, going for 24 hours to compete at that level against your competitors, that’s what makes this race so thrilling.” Everyone will get a chance to experience that thrill on Jan. 28, when the green flag drops on the 55th Rolex 24 At Daytona.

2018 Corvette ZR1 to be Powered by a DOHC LT5 Engine

P a g e 1 3 V o l u m e 1 I s s u e 1

Internal GM Document Reveals a new DOHC Engine Called “LT5” for the “Y” Platform The 1990 – 1995 Corvette ZR-1 was the first Corvette to come from General Motors with an all-aluminum “exotic” double overhead cam engine (LT5) that was designed by GM Powertrain and Lotus Cars of Hethel, England (owned by GM at the time) and manufactured in a clean room environment at Mercury Marine in Stillwater, Oklahoma (GM owned at the time). We’ve all seen the spy photos of the upcoming 2018 Corvette that has been rumored to be called “ZR1” and powered by a new engine called the “LT5”. That rumor may now be fact. According to a recent poster on Reddit, apparently the fifth page of a recent GM service department docu-ment lists the internal codes that GM will use for its 2018 model year vehicles. On that page, is a table called “Passenger Car Engines for GMNA,” and at the end of the table is the description of a new engine: ENGINE GAS CYL, 6.2L, SIDI, DOHC, VVT, ALUM, GM. The engine is listed for the Y-platform which is the Corvette platform. The internal name for that engine is “LT5”. It has been rumored that the 2019 mid-engine Corvette that’s currently in development will also carry a DOHC motor of some kind. Whether or not this new LT5 will carry over into the mid-engine Corvette is anyone’s guess. Last week, GM announced that it will be investing $296 million into the Tonawanda engine assembly plant in Buffalo, New York in order to start a future V8 engine line in the Generation V family for 2018. The Generation V family of engines currently includes the 6.2-liter LT1 V8 found in the C7 Corvette Stingray as well as some of GM’s full size pickup trucks and SUVs. It is possible that this new LT5 engine, or even the engine that will power the 2019 mid-engine Corvette, could be built in Tonawanda. For now, it’s a safe bet, we’ll be seeing a high-revving, fuel efficient engine coming for the C7’s Swan Song.

Visit Florida Racing tests new Riley Chassis

C i t r u s V e t t e s & C a m a r o s C a r C l u b

Visit Florida Racing tested its new Gibson-powered Riley Technologies Mk. 30 LMP2 machine for the first time at Carolina Motorsports Park on Saturday. Both Marc Goossens and Renger Van Der Zande, who were recently an-nounced as the team's full-time drivers for the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship campaign, were on hand to take their first laps in the car. Saturday's test served as an initial shakedown for the Daytona Beach-based squad prior to the first official IMSA open test next week at Daytona Inter-national Speedway. The new season officially kicks off with the annual Roar before the 24 at Daytona, Jan. 6-8.

GM to Shut Down the Corvette Assembly Plant for One Week as Sales Slow

P a g e 1 5 V o l u m e 1 I s s u e 1

General Motors announced this afternoon that it will idle five of its assembly plants in January due to large inventories of passenger vehicles on the ground. According to an Automotive News report, the Bowling Green Assembly Plant, home of the Corvette, is one of the factories that will be closed. The report said the closures will begin next month and that the Corvette plant is expected to be shut down for one week while some of the other plants could be closed for two to three weeks. The closures will hit plants in Michigan, Ohio, Kansas and Kentucky. The vehicles involved include Chevrolet’s Impala, Camaro, Malibu, Cruise and Volt. The Buick Lacrosse and the Cadillac CT6 sedans were also named in the report. Automotive News said that GM’s inventories have been creeping up from the targeted 70 days’ worth of inventory up to a 90 supply of vehicles. To help combat rising inventories, Chevrolet has been offering new rebates and other incentives for the new 2017 Corvettes including the brand new Grand Sport model.

We asked Corvette seller Mike Furman about the planned shut down and he tells us that “this is business as usual for General Motors” when it sees it has too much inventory on hand. He added that “it’s not much to get concerned about.” Mike says that based on his Target Production Week reports, the shutdown may happen the week of January 15th.

Stay tuned as we work to get more information about the Corvette Assembly Plant’s closure next month.

First Drive: 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 rules the roost and the track

C i t r u s V e t t e s & C a m a r o s C a r C l u b

As this tumultuous year winds to a close, you might be tempted to remember 2016 as the year of (fill in the blank, we all have different takes on it). But we prefer to remember it as The Year of the Camaro. Think about it: We started out the year with four, six, and beefy V8 Camaros, from the 2.0-liter turbo four all the way up to the powerful 455-hp V8 Camaro SS. Then last month we got the 1LE option package for V6 and V8 Camaros with a track-ready suspension kit and grippy Goodyear Eagle F1 tires. Now, just in time for Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Solstice/Festivus, we get this, the mightiest of all current Camaros: the Nürburgring-stomping ZL1. When historians look back on this year, we hope it is the Camaros that they write about. The ZL1 is basically a Camaro with the mighty and terrible 6.2-liter LT4 supercharged V8 torn from the loins of the massive and intimidating Z06 Corvette and hammered and squashed into the gaping maw of the Camaro engine bay. Thus Frankensteined, it makes 650 h.p. and 650 lb-ft of torque. This in a car that now weighs an entirely reasonable 3,887 pounds. Camaro experts and those good at math will already have figured out that means the new ZL1 weighs 200 pounds less than the Holden-based Gen 5 Camaro while spitting out 70 more h.p. and 94 more lb-ft than the car it replaces. Apart from some rehanging of peripheral drives, wet sump instead of dry

sump for packaging reasons and a different muffler or two, the engine is

unchanged from its Corvette Z06 usage.

And while the entry-level ZL1 comes with a perfectly meaty Tremec

TR6060 six-speed manual, the Chevrolet team is most proud of its new

10-speed automatic.

It’s all new, and the ZL1 is the first of what will eventually be eight

applications by 2018 (can’t wait to see seven more V8-rear-drive perfor-

mance cars in the next two years!).

First Drive: 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 rules the roost and the track

P a g e 1 7 V o l u m e 1 I s s u e 1

“We worked four or five years on this,” said Jeff Trush, lead calibrator for the Hydra-Matic 10R90, as the automatic transmission is named. “We wanted world-class drivability and world-class performance. We didn’t want people to feel bumps and bangs when you really drive it in anger.” All the shift algorithms in the $1,595-option 10-speed are unique and won’t be used in future 10R90 applications, Trush, who got his first Camaro at age 15, told us. It automatically assumes any one of three unique shifting strategies to match shifts to how you are driving. The ZL1 also gets a new, faster-acting version of Magnetic Ride Control, the electronic limited slip differential that swings from zero to 2,000 newton-meters of torque-gripping lock, and ZF electric power steering that varies ratios from 11:1 to 15:1. The front brakes are the largest iron brakes they’ve ever put on a Camaro, with 15.35-inch six-piston units in front and 14.37-inch rears. Unique 20-inch forged aluminum wheels are standard, with 285/30ZR20 front, 305/30ZR20 rear Goodyear Eagle Super Car 3 summer tires. That rubber actually has a tire temperature indicator, too: cold, cool, warm, hot. And, of course, there’s a performance-data recorder that lets you track 30 channels of data like steering, brake, throttle, etc. It’s optional on ZL1 and 1LE. Before we get to our impressions, consider those of a couple of other guys’ first.

Ride and handling engineer Drew Cattell was behind the wheel when the ZL1 went around Nürburgring in 7:29.61 last May. In six two-week trips to the Nordschleife, he figures he’s “knocking on the door of a thousand laps over there.” That’s a heck of a knock. He says it takes 30 or 40 laps before you start getting comfortable, “But it’s a lot more than that to go fast.” He also did at least that many laps on a gaming simulator, but “PlayStation or Gran Turismo doesn’t give you any sensation of speed or bumps, and if something goes wrong there, I can just hit reset.” So how was it in the ZL1 on real thing? “The car was pretty comfortable,” he said. “The MR dampers really enabled that a lot. They soak up the bumps. You get airborne three times over there. I really just enjoyed driving the car on the track.” The second guy is Team Penske IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden, who had six laps in the ZL1 on the big course at Willow Springs racetrack, which was where we drove it, too. “The cool thing was first the brakes. I was thinking, ‘Are they gonna hold up, are they gonna start fading,' and I didn’t feel that. The brake pressure didn’t change. They’re really, really good. At this track, there’s a lot of high-speed parts to it. It sounds like these guys did a lot of work on the aerodynamics. I didn’t notice any change in downforce or lift when I was changing the front splitter height by getting on and off the throttle. To be honest, I was driving the shit out of the car.” Newgarden also played around with the five drive-selector modes that use launch control, traction control and electronic stability control “to enhance performance on the racetrack and drag strip.” There are three main modes: Tour, Sport and Track, and then five sub modes: wet, dry, Sport 1, Sport 2 and Race. “You have all these track modes,” Newgarden said. “The first thing I want is to take all that shit off. We started in Sport 1 and you can drive the heck out of the car. It’s not limiting you it’s just kind of like a little hand holding you. It lets you get sideways, but it doesn’t let you get stupid sideways. I’m trying to rotate the thing on entry, and it gave me the confidence to let me do that. If you’re a novice, intermediate or a pro, it has the features for

anybody to enjoy it.

You can enjoy pushing to the limit. Even for me, I actually like having a little bit of that assistance. It gave me confidence to probe the track” Our drives were just like Newgarden’s. Haha. First was in a manual transmission Camaro SS not the ZL1 in a lead-follow. We loved the manual trans and were quite happy with the power and torque of the SS. For a lot, less money, you could have nearly as much fun. Our second drive was in a six-speed manual ZL1 in Tour mode. Here we found Tour mode intervened for quite some time what felt like two or three seconds with traction control when we were exiting Big Willow’s Turn 3 and again exiting Turn 5. It was too much intervention for a racetrack. We wouldn't have spun (Would we? Nah, no way!). The LT4 engine, however, was strong, eating up track and asking for more. It had loads of power and torque. Our third drive was in a ZL1 with the 10-speed automatic. We let it shift for us. It took the 10R90 a couple turns to figure out that we were really serious about driving fast around this track, then it started shifting quickly and smoothly up and down the case. Sport 2 seemed like a good setting for this track. It intervened somewhat, but not as overtly as the Tour mode. We were hitting 140 at the end of the front stretch and 125 on the backstretch.

Our fourth drive was in another six-speed manual with the rev-matching function engaged. That was fun and fast but in no way furious. We decided we liked the manual better, at least here. The rev-matching feature was very cool and much appreciated. Made us look like Josef Newgarden or someone. Our fifth drive was actually a ride with Newgarden driving. He swore a lot (both in his presentation and in the car) and slid all over the place. It was refreshing hearing a sponsored driver talk like any regular guy would talk while having what was obviously a great time. No canned sponsor-thanking here. We liked this guy. He called our three laps “qualifying,” and said in a race he would probably conserve the tires more. It’s amazing to see how confident real race car drivers are at sliding their cars around at speeds over 100 mph that’s what separates them from us. Well, that and about a million dollars a week, a private jet and maybe a few other things. Our last drive was on regular city streets in a ZL1 automatic. The ride out in the real world was firm, more firm than you’d like if you weren’t tough enough to handle it. You can handle it, though. We did not get a chance to try drag racing this, though it sure looks ready for that. Chevy quotes a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds and a quarter-mile in 11.4 seconds at 127 mph. There’s a customizable launch control and even a line-lock function for lighting ‘em up in the bleach box. Woo hoo!

Do I want It? Of course, you want it if you have $63,435 for the six-speed manual coupe, which includes $995 destination and a $1,300 gas-guzzler penalty. Add $1,595 for one of those 10-speed automatics. The convertible is coming in the first quarter of 2017, so hang on for that if you like. Or buy any of many muscle cars from the two domestic competitors. There are Mustangs galore ranging from 2.3-liter EcoBoost fours to Shelby’s. And there are Dodge Challengers ranging from entry-level coupes to 707-hp Hellcats. Yes, this is a heck of a year, with so much horsepower in it. Surely, historians or archeologists will realize that, won’t they? We all have.
