On-Going ProjectsNew windows have been installed at the

Management Office, Alice Marble Hall and the Montessori School. They look great and are saving energy. Next project is the pool area. The family pool will get a new concrete cantilever edge, new tile and will be resurfaced. Then all of the association buildings will be painted. The inside of the management office will also be painted. You will also notice at the pool area the new emergency phone located on the pool building wall. This phone is for emergencies only.

Approval of the new Rules & RegulationsAt the November 20, 2018 Board of Directors

Meeting, the Board approved and adopted the updated Rules and Regulations. The biggest change to the rules will be the enforcement of the “Green Grass” rule, which was not enforced during the drought that plagued our state from 2012-2016. In April 2017, Governor Brown lifted the drought emergency. Now the association will require those homeowners with dead or dormant lawns to reseed or the homeowner may choose to convert their lawn to desert landscape. A homeowner may convert their

lawn to desert landscape without obtaining approval from the Architectural Committee. Please note desert landscape is not just dirt; it must include some plants, river rock or gravel or decomposed granite (Dee-gee). This would also include the back yard that is visible from the golf course.

Visible Address NumbersDuring managements weekly drive around the

property it has been noted that some homes do not have a visible address, either on the curb or on the building. This makes it difficult for emergency personnel (i.e. ambulance, Police, etc.) to locate you in an emergency. Please check your property and make sure your address is visible from the street either by painting it on the curb in front of your home or have address numbers installed on your home.

The Joslyn Center has been serving Palm Desert and its neighboring cities for 38 years, but many people do not know about the vital role that this invaluable local institution plays in our community.

A nonprofit organization that serves adults ages 50 and up, the Joslyn Center welcomes up to 400 visitors a day and offering more than 50 programs each week including: exercise and strengthening classes; entertainment and social events; wellness seminars; aging mastery training; brain boot camps; hearing, vision and blood testing; and much more. Membership is $30 per year.

The Joslyn Center benefits more than just its 2,000 members serving as one of Palm Desert’s two official community cooling centers when summer temperatures soar.

Through its Meals on Wheels program, the Center delivered more than 13,600 meals to people and more than 3,200 meals to those people’s pets over the past year.

Penny’s Pantry at the Center provides food to

roughly 190 needy residents a month distributing more than 2,300 bags of groceries a year.

People who might not have a healthy support network benefit from the Joslyn’s Telephone Safety Net program, which placed more than 2,600 caring calls to these residents last year alone.

The Joslyn Center is led by an eleven-member Board of Directors who oversee six full-time and three part-time staff including Executive Director Jack Newby, who has headed the staff team since 2017. The staff is assisted by a team of dedicated and highly qualified volunteers who, last year alone, contributed more than 15,100 hours of service.

The City of Palm Desert has always supported the Joslyn Center and its mission,

having donated land for the establishment of the facility in 1981 and contributing to the Center’s annual budget through the Cove Communities, which includes the cities of Indian Wells and Rancho Mirage.

For more information about the Joslyn Center, please call 760-340-3220 or visit www.joslyncenter.org.

CVWD launches new tours3. The Wastewater Treatment, Mid-Valley Pipeline

& Groundwater Sustainability Tour: This half-day tour will visit CVWD’s wastewater treatment plant in Palm Desert where approximately 10 million gallons of wastewater is processed daily. Participants will learn how CVWD recycles this water through a multi-step treatment process for outdoor irrigation on golf courses and other landscapes. The tour will also include a visit to the Mid-Valley Pump Station where water is

pumped out of the Coachella Canal to the treatment plant and is blended with

recycled wastewater to supplement golf course irrigation needs. A visit to the Desert Willow Golf Resort is also included along with

a discussion of their use of recycled water for irrigation.

Private tours can also be requested from CVWD. Each fall and spring CVWD offers a limited

number of customized tours based on budget, staff and facility availability. Private

bus tours have a maximum of 25 participants per bus, and there must be a minimum of 10 participants for a tour. Tour participants get a first-hand look at a municipal well site, a water storage reservoir, Lake Cahuilla (which is the terminus of the Coachella Canal), a groundwater replenishment facility, and a wastewater reclamation plant (which produces recycled water for use on golf courses). Groups that have not scheduled a private tour within the last three years will be given priority.

For additional information and tour guidelines, including information about the required liability waiver, and to sign up for a tour, visit www.cvwd.org/tours

Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) has launched a new line of tours to provide an in-depth look at water issues in the Coachella Valley.

The new educational tours will give customers a chance to see the internal workings of CVWD and the expansive water systems that the district manages and will supplement the Imperial Dam Tour that will continue to be offered.

These are the tours that have been added to the CVWD lineup:

1. The Domestic & Stormwater Tour: This half-day tour will visit a well site where CVWD pumps water from the aquifer and delivers it to customers through a complex distribution system. Participants will learn how CVWD collects and tests more than 22,000 water samples annually to ensure safe, high-quality drinking water. A stop at a reservoir will show how water is stored for reliable delivery to homes and businesses 24/7. This tour will also travel through the La Quinta portion of CVWD’s stormwater protection and flood control facilities. CVWD protects 590 square miles from flooding.

2. The Canal, Agriculture & Replenishment Tour: This half-day tour shows how water is monitored and accounted for from CVWD’s Control Room using microwave communication devices and state-of-the-art technology. Participants will visit a local farm area where micro-irrigation is used, saving more than 30 percent of water over traditional irrigation methods. This tour also includes a stop at a replenishment facility where Colorado River water percolates into the groundwater basin replacing some of what valley consumers have used.
