Summary of Experience: I have received Bond Solon training as an Expert Witness. I prepare approximately 250 medicolegal reports per annum. I am a full time NHS Consultant Psychiatrist, training at Cambridge University and St Georges University of London. I was Director of Liaison Psychiatry Services at St George’s Hospital, London. I have special expertise in the fields of trauma including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, affective disorders, chronic pain, neuropsychiatry, adult neurodevelopmental disorders including autism spectrum disorders, body image, psychological medicine (the interface between medicine / surgery and psychiatry) and anxiety disorders. I originally trained in medicine and surgery at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, also taking an MA in Psychology.
Present Appointments: I am a Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Psychiatry, Neuropsychiatry, Liaison Psychiatry and Eating Disorders.
I am Senior Lecturer at St George’s University, London and Visiting Professor at Leeds Met University.
I am a General Adult Psychiatrist and GMC-accredited Liaison Psychiatrist.
I am Consultant Psychiatrist at Leeds and York NHS Partnerships Mental Health Trust, Visiting Senior Lecturer at St Georges University of London and Visiting Professor at Leeds Met University.
I am Associate Medical Director at Leeds and York NHS Partnerships Mental Health Trust.
I am Training Programme Director responsible for General Adult Psychiatry in Yorkshire and Humber (Yorkshire Deanery), and previously Training Programme Director responsible for General Adult Psychiatry in the London Deanery.
I am appointed Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Patient Safety group, setting policy for psychiatric risk management in the UK, including co-authorship of the Alderdice report on Suicide Prevention and the Kennedy report on Homicide Prevention.
I represent the ‘Academy of Royal Colleges’ on the ‘National Enquiry into Homicides and Suicides’.
I am elected member of the Mental Health Independent Advisory Group (Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership, HQIP), the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Policy Committee, Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Liaison Psychiatry Faculty, and the Samaritans’ Suicide Prevention Steering Group.
I am elected Chair the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Eating Disorder section, representing Eating Disorder specialism in the UK, setting standards and quality standards for specialists in the UK. I co-authored the MARSIPAN report on medical risk management.
I have a national research portfolio, and hold research grants including NIHR portfolio research.
Research and Publications:
As senior lecturer I chair a national research team at St Georges University, London, with a research portfolio addressing psychological medicine.
I have published 78 peer-review papers, including frequently cited papers in the British Medical Journal and Lancet, 19 in the last year.
I have also published 6 books or book chapters, including publications addressing aspects of psychological trauma, and 4 policy documents.
As Senior Lecturer I chair the national research team based at St Georges University of London, with a research portfolio addressing Psychological Medicine.
I was granted my Doctorate from Cambridge University for work in psychological medicine. This was awarded the Ralph Noble Prize.
